  • Flexible circular cantilever beams when excited externally introduce a lot of dynamic characteristics. The non-linear elements that these flexible beams develop include non-linearity due to inertia terms, spring, and damping. They show different characteristics of motion from each other. In the modes of lower order, the non-linearity due to spring is prevalent, while the non-linearity due to inertia Is prevalent in the modes of higher order. To analyze these effects the non-linear phenomena are analyzed experimentally. When the response characteristics of non-linear vibration are analyzed using autospectrum, it is possible to analyze the subharmonic and superharmonic mot ion by comparison. The phase change is analyzed using the method of phase portrait and the non-linear characteristics of response characteristics that are developed in flexible structures can be predicted and applied to the stage of design.

  • This paper intends to analyze the nonlinear forced vibrations of functionally graded material (FGM) beams with initial geometrical defects in hygro-thermal ambiences. For this purpose, we assume that the correlation properties of the material alter along the thickness direction in succession and the surface of the beam is subjected to humid and thermal loads. Based on the Euler Bernoulli beam theory and geometrical non-linearity, we use the Hamiltonian principle to formulate a theoretical model with consideration of the hygrothermal effects. Galerkin's technique has been proposed for the control equations of discrete systems. The non-linear primary resonances are acquired by applying the modified Lindstedt-Poincare method (MLP). Verify the reliability of the data obtained through comparison with literature. The non-linear resonance response is reflected by amplitude-frequency response curves. The numerical results indicate that the resonances of FGM beams include three non-linear characteristics, namely hard springs, soft springs and soft-hard spring types. The response modalities of the structure may transform between those non-linear characteristics when material properties, spring coefficients, geometric defect values, temperature-humidity loads and even the external stimulus generate variations.

  • The axle spring is used in primary suspension component of railway vehicles. The most important factor of axle spring is to have adequate spring constant for comfortable feeling of ride. The non-linear properties of rubber which were important parameter to evaluate of rubber components, were determined by the characteristic test. The finite element analysis of the axle spring are executed to predict the behavior of deformation and stiffness by using commercial FEA code.

  • Three kinds of viscoelastic damper model, which has a non-linear spring as an element is studied analytically and numerically. The behavior of the damper model shows non-linear hysteresis curves which is qualitatively similar to those of real viscoelastic materials. The motion is governed by a non-linear constitutive equation and an additional equation of motion. Harmonic balance method is applied to get analytic solutions of the system. The frequency-response curves show that multiple solutions co-exist and that the jump phenomena can occur. In addition, it is shown that separate solution branch exists and that it can merge with the primary response curve. Saddle-node bifurcation sets explain the occurrences of such non-linear phenomena.

  • A non-linear vibration isolation system composed of a non-linear spring and a linear damper was presented in a previous study. The advantage of the proposed isolator is the simple structure of the system. When the base of the isolator is harmonically excited, the response component of the mass at the excitation frequency was approximated using three different methods: linear approximation, harmonic balance, and higher-order frequency response functions (FRFs). The method using higher-order FRFs produces significantly more accurate results compared with the other methods. The error between the exact and approximate responses does not increase monotonously with the excitation amplitude and is less than 2%.

  • A non-linear vibration isolation system which is composed of a non-linear spring and a linear damper was proposed in past research. When the support of the isolation system is excited harmonically, the response component of the isolation system mass at the excitation frequency has been calculated approximately using the harmonic balance method. The response was approximated by a single mode, and the result was compared with a numerical result which is assumed as an accurate one. Next, the response was approximated by two modes, and the result was compared with the former one.

  • The purpose of this paper is to utilize the numerical assembly method (NAM) to determine the exact natural frequencies and mode shapes of a multi-step beam carrying multiple rigid bars, with each of the rigid bars possessing its own mass and rotary inertia, fixed to the beam at one point and supported by a translational spring and/or a rotational spring at another point. Where the fixed point of each rigid bar with the beam does not coincide with the center of gravity the rigid bar or the supporting point of the springs. The effects of the distance between the "fixed point" of each rigid bar and its center of gravity (i.e., eccentricity), and the distance between the "fixed point" and each linear spring (i.e., offset) are studied. For a beam carrying multiple various concentrated elements, the magnitude of each lumped mass and stiffness of each linear spring are the well-known key parameters affecting the free vibration characteristics of the (loaded) beam in the existing literature, however, the numerical results of this paper reveal that the eccentricity of each rigid bar and the offset of each linear spring are also the predominant parameters.

  • The seismic responses of a base Isolated Pressurized Water Reactor(PWR) are investigated using a mathematical model which expresses the superstructure as a linear lumped mass-spring and the seismic Isolator as an equivalent spring-damper. Time history analyses are performed for the 1940 El Centre earthquake with linear amplification. In the analysis 5% of structural damping is used for the superstructure. The effects of high damping rubber bearing on seismic response of the superstructure in base isolated system are evaluated for four stiffness model types. The acceleration responses in base isolated PWR superstructure with high damping rubber bearings are much smaller than those in fixed base structure. In the higher strain region where stiffness behaves non-linearly, the acceleration responses modelled by one equivalent stiffness are smaller than those in nonlinear spring model, and the higher stiffness spring model of isolator exhibits larger peak acceleration response at superstructure in the frequency range above 2.0 Hz. when subjected to linearly amplified 1940 El Centre earthquake.

  • A three-parameter model of viscoelastic damper which has a non-linear spring as an element is incorporated into an oscillator. The behavior of the damper model shows non-linear hysteresis curves which is qualitatively similar to those of real viscoelastic materials. The motion is governed by get analytic solutions of the system. The frequency-response curves show that multiple solutions co-exist and that the jump phenomena can occur. In addition it is shown that separate solution branch exists and that it can merge with the primary response curve. Saddle-node bifurcation sets explain the occurences of such non-linear phenomena. A direct time intergration of the original equation of motion validifies the use of the harmonic balance method to this sort of problem.
