Many techniques for data analysis also based on gaussian noise assumption which is often valid in various situations. However, the sensitivity of gravitational wave searches are limited by their non-gaussian and non-stationary noise. We introduce various on-going efforts to overcome this limitation in Korean Gravitational Wave Group. First, artificial neural networks are applied to discriminate non-gaussian noise artefacts and gravitational-wave signals using auxiliary channels of a gravitational wave detector. Second, viability of applying Hilbert-Huang transform is investigated to deal with non-stationary data of gravitational wave detectors. We also report progress in acceleration of low-latency gravitational search using GPGPU.
Signal processing techniques based on fractional order calculus have been successfully applied in analyzing heavy-tailed non-Gaussian signals. It was found that the surface EMG signals from the muscles having nuero-muscular disease are best modeled by using the heavy-tailed non-gaussian random processes. In this regard, this paper describes an application of digital fractional order lowpass differentiators(FOLPD, weighted FOLPD) based on the fractional order calculus in detecting peaks of surface EMG signal. The performances of the FOLPD and WFOLPD are analyzed based on different filter length and varying MUAP wave shape from recorded and simulated surface EMG signals. As a results, the WFOLPD showed better SNR improving factors than the existing WLPD and to be more robust under the various surface EMG signals.
Reliable wind signal reconstruction can be beneficial to the operational safety of long-span bridges. Non-Gaussian characteristics of wind signals make the reconstruction process challenging. In this paper, non-Gaussian wind signals are converted into a combined prediction of two kinds of features, actual wind speeds and wind angles of attack. First, two decomposition techniques, empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and variational mode decomposition (VMD), are introduced to decompose wind signals into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) to reduce the randomness of wind signals. Their principles and applicability are also discussed. Then, four artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are utilized for wind signal reconstruction by combining the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with back propagation neural network (BPNN), support vector regression (SVR), long short-term memory (LSTM) and bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM), respectively. Measured wind signals from a bridge site in a deep-cutting gorge are taken as experimental subjects. The results showed that the reconstruction error of high-frequency components of EMD is too large. On the contrary, VMD fully extracts the multiscale rules of the signal, reduces the component complexity. The combination of VMD-PSO-Bi-LSTM is demonstrated to be the most effective among all hybrid models.
It is well known that double integration of measured acceleration records are very difficult, particularly in the case of measurements on civil engineering structures. The measured accelerations on civil structures usually contain non-gaussian and low-frequency noises as well as acceleration records are non-stationary. For this type of signals, wavelet transform can be useful because of its inherent processing abilities for non-stationary signals. In this paper, the do-noising algorithm using the wavelet transform are slightly extended to process non-gaussian and low frequency noises, using median filter concepts. The example studies show that the integration can be improved using proposed method.

Multivariate analysis and batch monitoring on a pilot-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) are described for integrated wastewater treatment management system, where a batchwise multiway independent component analysis method (MICA) are used to extract meaningful hidden information from non-Gaussian wastewater treatment data. Three-way batch data of SBR are unfolded batch-wisely, and then a non-Gaussian multivariate monitoring method is used to capture the non-Gaussian characteristics of normal batches in biological wastewater treatment plant. It is successfully applied to an 80L SBR for biological wastewater treatment, which is characterized by a variety of error sources with non-Gaussian characteristics. The batchwise multivariate monitoring results of a pilot-scale SBR for integrated wastewater treatment management system showed more powerful monitoring performance on a WWTP application than the conventional method since it can extract non-Gaussian source signals which are independent and cross-correlation of variables.
In this letter, a simplified suboptimum receiver based on soft-limiting for the detection of binary antipodal signals in non-Gaussian noise modeled as a generalized normal-Laplace (GNL) distribution combined with Gaussian noise is presented. The suboptimum receiver has low computational complexity. Furthermore, when the number of diversity branches is small, its performance is very close to that of the Neyman-Pearson optimum receiver based on the probability density function obtained by the Fourier inversion of the characteristic function of the GNL-plus-Gaussian distribution.
A number of methods based on various ideas have been proposed for simulating the non-Gaussian stationary process. However, these methods have some limitations. This paper reviewed several simulation methods based on the translation method using logarithmic and polynomial functions, which have emerged in the history of statistics and in the field of civil engineering. The applicability of each method is discussed from the viewpoint of the reproducibility of higher order statistics of the object function in the simulated sample functions, and examined using pressure signals measured from wind tunnel experiments for various shapes of buildings. The parameter estimation methods, i.e. the method of moments and quantile plot, are also reviewed, and the useful aspects of each method are discussed. Additionally, a simple worksheet for parameter estimation is derived based on the method of moment for practical application, and the accuracy is discussed comparing with a set of previously proposed formulae.

Herein, we estimate the direction of arrival (DOA) of non-Gaussian signals for nested arrays (NAs) by implementing the fourth-order difference co-array (FODC) and successive methods. In particular, considering the property of the fourth-order cumulant (FOC), we first construct the FODC of the NA, which can obtain O(N4) virtual elements using N physical sensors, whereas conventional FOC methods can only obtain O(N2) virtual elements. In addition, the closed-form expression of FODC is presented to verify the enhanced degrees of freedom (DOFs). Subsequently, we exploit the vectorized FOC (VFOC) matrix to match the FODC of the NA. Notably, the VFOC matrix is a single snapshot vector, and the initial DOA estimates can be obtained via the discrete Fourier transform method under the underdetermined correlation matrix condition, which utilizes the complete DOFs of the FODC. Finally, fine estimates are obtained through the spatial smoothing-Capon method with partial spectrum searching. Numerical simulation verifies the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.
