  • The nonlinear dynamic characteristic of a straight tube conveying fluid with constraints and an attached mass on the tube is examined in this study An experimental apparatus with an elastomer tube conveying water which has an attached mass and constraints is made and comparisons are made between the theoretical results from the non-linear equation of motion of piping system and the experimental results. The comparisons show that the tube is destabilized as the magnitude of the attached mass increases, and stabilized as the position of the attached mass closes to the fixed end. In case of a small end-mass, the system shows complicated and different types of solutions. For a constant end-mass. the system undergoes a series of bifurcations after the first Hopf bifurcation, as the flow velocity increases. which causes chaotic motions of the tube eventually.

  • Direct velocity feedback (DVFB) control is known that it offers an unconditional stability with very high performance when the control strategy is applied at a point collocated sensor and actuator pair. because the sensor-actuator pair has strictly positive real (SPR) property In this paper, two types of collocated sensor-actuator pairs are considered for practical active vibration control of a structure. They are a Point collocated sensor-actuator pair and a point sensor-distributed actuator pair. Both pairs with DVFB show robust stability and performance. It is noted that the collocated point sensor-actuator ultimately acts as a “skyhook” damper, hut the point sensor-distributed actuator pair with DVFB acts as a “skyhook” rotational damper pair.

  • Nowadays, diesel power plant using low speed two stroke diesel engine is widely used in islands and restricted areas. Considerations were given to its benefit of high thermal efficiency, reliability and durability compared to the other prime movers. However, various types of engine vibration affect neighboring buildings to their structural vibration. For this, diesel power plant are held liable for the troubles caused by these vibration. These are mainly due to the X- and H-type engine vibrations which we excited by the X- and H- guide force moment. Authors have identified a structural vibration of new pattern called ‘T-mode vibration’ due to the torsional vibration of shafting system. In this paper, T-mode vibration is analyzed through an experimental method based on the global vibration measurement.

  • This study aimed to evaluate the room acoustical performances of multi-purpose halls, analyzing the architectural features by survey and the acoustical characteristics by measurements. Moreover, vocabularies appropriate for the evaluation of the room acoustical performance were determined through questionnaire and subjective responses. From the correlation analysis and factor analysis to the physical values through measurements and the subjective evaluation using vocabularies, useful vocabularies for the evaluation of multi-purpose halls' acoustical performances were determined and physical parameters corresponding to the vocabulary were identified.

  • This paper presents vibration control of an engine mount for a passenger vehicle utilizing ER fluid and piezoelectric actuator. The proposed engine mount can be isolated the vibration of wide frequency range with many types of amplitude. The main function of ER fluid is to attenuate vibration for low frequency with large amplitude, while the piezoelectric actuator is activated in hish frequency range with small amplitude. A mathematical model of the engine mount is derived using Hydraulic model and mechanical model. After formulating the governing equation of motion, then field-dependent dynamic stiffness of the engine mount is evaluated for various engine speed and excitation amplitude conditions. Then robust controller is designed to attenuate vibration of wide range frequency component. Computer simulation is undertaken in order to evaluate the vibration control performance such as transmissibility magnitude in frequency domains.

  • The paper presents the dynamic stability of a flexible shoe in drum brake systems subjected to a frictional force. The frictional force between the drum and the shoe is assumed as a distributed frictional force, while the shute is modeled as an elastic beam supported by two translational springs at both ends and elastic foundations. Governing equations of motion are derived by energy expressions, and their numerical results are obtained by employing the finite element method. The critical distributed frictional force and the instability regions are demonstrated by changing the stiffness of two translational springs and elastic foundation parameters. It is also shown that the beam loses its stability by flutter and divergence depending on the stiffness of elastic supports and elastic foundation parameters. Time responses of beams corresponding to their instability types are also demonstrated.

  • Reduction of a ship's rolling is the most important performance requirement for improving the safety of the crew on board and preventing damage to cargos as well as improving the comfort of the ride. A mass driving anti-rolling system (MD-ARS) might be one candidate of several systems against the ship's rolling. In this paper, three types of MD-ARS, two passive and one active devices, are developed for small ships. After they are installed on the cabin of the small leisure boat, respectively, a series of test is conducted before and after operating them. Through the test, it is confirmed that the roll responses of the ship are pretty well reduced by the system.

  • In turbomachinery rotor, there are small differences in the structural and/or geometrical properties of individual blades, which are referred to as blade mistuning. Mistuning effects of the forced response of bladed disks can be extremely large as often reported in many studies. In this paper, the pattern optimization of intentional mistuning for bladed disks considering with damping and coupling effect is the focus of the present investigation. More specifically, the class of intentionally mistuned disks considered here is limited, for cost reasons, to arrangements of two types of blades (A and B, say) and Genetic Algorithm is used to optimize the arrangement of these blades around the disk to reduce the forced response of blade with different damping and coupling stiffness.

  • As the construction of the high-rise building increases worldwide, the effort has been exerted to improve the safety and serviceability if the structure against various types of external dynamic loads such as wind load, seismic load, etc. The mass damper, defined as dynamic absorber in mechanical engineering is known one of the effective methods to control the vibration of flexible large structures. The hybrid mass damper, HMD is known as the most appropriate type of the mass dampers. In this paper, the control force was designed for HMD by numerical simulations and the performance of HMD to control the flexible vibration of the steel tower induced by sinusoidal force excitation was evaluated, also TMD was designed for a 1-DOF lumped mass model.
