  • Valve train is one of the important noise sources in idling engines. Valve train noise comes mostly from two different impacts. One is the impact between cam and tappet at the beginning of the valve open period, which is an important source of impulsive noise of valve trains. The other is the impact between valve and valve seat at the closing of the valve open period. In case of mechanical lash adjusters, it is very difficult to control the initial impact. In this paper, we designed various types of cam profiles, especially in the opening ramp design, and investigated the effect of cam profiles on the magnitude of the initial impact. The effects that some cam design parameters have on the impulsive noise are also observed.

  • Increasing population in the cities, it has been demanded that urban planner should consider environmental problem. In this regard compact city has been strongly suggested as an environmental urban form which can reduce energy consumption. However, compact city can also cause noise problem, because residential buildings have to be located near roads and railways. In order to solve this problem, it is necessary for urban planner to examine the types of roads and railways before they are established. Noise map is able to be useful tool for the task.

  • This paper presents vibration and noise control of flexible structures using squeeze mode electro-rheological mounts. After verifying that the damping force of the ER mount can be controlled by the intensity of the electric fild, two different types of ER squeeze mounts have been devised. Firstly, a small size ER mount to support 3 kg is manufactured and applied to the frame structure to control the vibration. An optimal controller which consists of the velocity and the transmitted force feedback signals is designed and implemented to attenuate both the vibration and the transmitted forces. Secondly, a large size of ER mount to support 200 kg is devised and applied to the shell structure to reduce the radiated noise. Dynamic modeling and controller design are undertaken in order to evaluate noise control performance as well as isolation performance of the transmitted force. The radiated noise from the cylindrical shell is calculated by SYSNOISE using forces which are transmitted to the cylindrical shell through two-stage mounting system.

  • The structure borne noise of the air-conditioner, which degrades the noise quality, is hardly reduced by the general noise treatments. It can be effectively reduced by eliminating the structural vibration which the noise originates from. The rubber vibration isolator prevents the dynamic force induced by the fan driving motor from exciting the chassis structure, which finally reduces the structure borne noise. The dynamic properties of the vibration isolation system such as the natural frequency of the vibration isolation and loss factor of the rubber isolator, need to be experimentally evaluated. In this paper, these dynamic properties were obtained by the resonant method using the impact hammer for 3 types of the isolator specimens. It is known that the isolation natural frequency of the axial direction of the rubber isolator is two times higher than that of the radial direction, and is proportional to the hardness of the rubber specimen.

  • The intake noise of an automobile induced by firing of an engine accompanies acoustic resonances of ducts of an intake system. Conventionally, the adoption of the Helmholtz type resonator was one of possible ways to eliminate the booming noise due to acoustic resonances of air ducts. Although the Helmholtz type resonator is convenient to attenuate the intake noise of an automobile, the usage of the Helmholtz type resonator requires cost increase or big engine room space. Therefore, reduction of the number of the resonators or the volume of the resonators is essential to increase the value of an automobile. To meet these requirements, other types of resonator are suggested instead of the Helmholtz type resonator. The effectiveness of the suggested resonators is compared considering noise reduction ability, effect to the engine performance and size of each resonator.

  • Abstract Increasing awareness of industrial noise pollution and emerging stricter standards have made noise an important topic of research in electric motors. The standard three-phase induction motors. see Fig. 1, (abbreviated further as TPIM) are mass-produced as being simple, robust and rather inexpensive, as opposed to other types of electric motors. Electric motors use over half of all electricity consumed in most countries. Typically motors consume 60∼80 % of the electricity for those used In the industrial sector and about 20∼35 % of the electricity for those used in the commercial sector. For that is important to know their participation to the noise pollution of the environment and the efficient ways of their noise reduction. Each step in determining the ways for TPIM electromagnetic noise reduction including the methods that highlight their efficiency, are presented and explained.

  • In this paper, we present noise measurement results of 8 vehicles. The measurement was done by a close proximity method attaching surface microphones on the test vehicle. For the 9 road surface types constructed at Korean highway test road, the vehicles were tested from 50 to 120 km/h at the interval of 10 km/h in normal steady state and inertia cruising conditions. Using the results, we evaluate and discuss the effect of vehicle noise generation depending on the different conditions for vehicle type, speed, road surface and loading condition, especially focused on friction noise between tyre and road surface.

  • The expansion joints are installed for connecting the bridge segments. The ambient noise expansion joints are required in domestic market because of regulation on the noise neighboring traffic roads established by ministry of environment. Therefore, field tests for measuring environment noise depending on the types of the expansion joints are carried out in order to examine the effect of expansion joints into the environments. Related geometrical analysis has been performed.

  • We propose a noise estimation method using edge detection in moving pictures. Edge detection is to exclude structures and details which have an effect on the noise estimation. To detect edge, we use Sobel and morphological closing operators which are robust to details of images. The proposed noise estimation method is more efficiently applied to noise estimation in various types of moving images and has better results than those of existing noise estimation methods. Also, proposed algorithm can be efficiently applied to image and video applications.
