  • Total number concentration of aerosols larger than 10 nm ($N_{CN10}$), 3 nm ($N_{CN3}$), and cloud condensation nuclei ($N_{CCN}$) were measured during four different ship cruises over the Yellow Sea. Average values of $N_{CN10}$ and $N_{CCN}$ at 0.6% supersaturation were 6914 and $3353cm^{-3}$, respectively, and the minimum value of $N_{CN10}$ was $2000cm^{-3}$, suggesting significant anthropogenic influence even at relatively clean marine environment. Although $N_{CN10}$ and $N_{CN3}$ increased near the coast due to anthropogenic influence, $N_{CCN}$ was relatively constant and therefore $N_{CCN}/N_{CN10}$ ratio tended to decrease, suggesting that coastal aerosols were relatively less hygroscopic. In general $N_{CN10}$, $N_{CN3}$, and $N_{CCN}$ during the cruises seemed to be significantly influenced by wet scavenging effects (e.g. fog) and boundary layer height variation. Only one new particle formation (NPF) event was observed during the measurement period. Interestingly, the NPF event occurred during a dust storm event and spatial scale of the NPF event was estimated to be larger than 100 km. These results demonstrate that aerosol and CCN concentration over the Yellow Sea can vary due to various different factors.

  • 1. Introduction : In microfiltration the transport, deposition and removal of particles control cake formation on a filter. In this connection a new model on cake formation, based on the wall shear stress, was tested here in comparison with experiments of fine particle slurry under Taylor-vortex flow. The model expresses the deposition process for particles as two first-order steps in series of mass transfer and adhesion, and their removal process as a linear relation to the wall shear stress. This embraces characteristics of both dead-end and crossflow filtration. The correlation resulting from fitting to experimental data represented the experimental data reasonably well. This study will be helpful in analyzing fouling in heat exchangers.

  • Core-shell polymers of methyl methacrylate/styrene pair were prepared by sequential emulsion polymerization in the presence of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS) as an emulsifier using ammonium persulfate(APS) as an initiator. The characteristics of these core-shell polymers were evaluated. Core-shell composite latex has the both properties of core and shell components in a particle, where as polymer blonds or copolymers show a combined properties from the physical properties or two homopolymers. This unique behavior of core-shell composite latex can be used in many industrial fields. However, in preparation of core-shell composite latex, several unexpected phenomina are observed, such as, particle coagulation, low degree of polymerization, and formation of new particles during shell polymerization. To solve the disadvantages, we studied the effects of surfactant concentrations, initiator concentrations, and reaction temperature on the tore-shell structure or PMMA/PSt and PSt/PMMA. Particle size and particle size distribution were measured by using particle size analyzer, and the morphology of the core-shell composite latex was observed by using transmission electron microscope. Glass transition temperature($T_g$) was also measured by using differential scanning calorimeter. To identify the core-shell structure, pH of the composite latex solutions were measured.

  • For the purpose of collecting fog droplets as a function of size a new sampling method was developed in this study. Formation of 100$\pm$10㎛ thickness of polymeric water absorbent film (PWAF) on a nuclepore filter could be successfully realized. Also applicability of particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) method to the chemical analysis of size-segregated fog droplets collected on PWAF was examined experimentally with synthetic fog droplets generated from a nebulizer. Absorption capacity of S-PAAS polymeric water absorbent shows marked decreases in the range less than 1 wt% and slight decrease between 1 and 3.5 wt% of every salt concentration. Dependency of absorption capacity on pH shows the maximum at pH 7. No apparent peak which can influence the quantitative analysis of elements dissolved and suspended in fog droplets was found at PIXE spectrum of PWAF blank. PWAF kept the original shape without rupture under the PIXE analytical conditions of beam intensity for 10 to 60 nA and irradiation time of 4∼5 min. It should be said that the proposed new technique in the work is helpful to get more detailed information of fog droplets, to clarify the fog formation processes, and to develop a model of acid deposition process.

  • The effects of pH of solution on structural, electrical, and optical properties of CdS thin films prepared by solution growth method were investigated. With increasing pH of the solution, both crystallinity and transmittance of CdS thin film were deteriorated due to impurities and CdS particles, which were produced by homogeneous nucleation and adsorbed on the surface of CdS thin films. The films were strongly adherent to substrates and has low resistivity of 10~$10^2{\omega}cm$ regrardless of deposition conditions. After annealing at 30$0^{\circ}C$ in Ar atmosphere, the resistivity decreased due to desorption of impurity ions as well as the formation of S vacancies, but after annealing above 35$0^{\circ}C$ it increased by an agglomeration of S vacancies. After annealing in air atmosphere, the film resistivity increased because of the formation of oxide particle in grain boundaries.

  • Core-shell particles of inorganic/organic pair were synthesized from $CaCO_3$ absorbed sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS) surfactant. Shell components were synthesized by sequential emulsion polymerization. Various monomers were used as shell components such as methyl methacrylate(MMA), ethyl acrylate(EA), butyl acrylate(BA), and styrene(St). Ammonium persulfate(APS) was used as an initiator and 2-ethylhexyl acylate(2-EHA) was used as a functional monomer, In the $CaCO_3$/organic core-shell particle polymerization, $CaCO_3$ absorbed surfactant SDBS of 0.5 wt% was prepared first and then core $CaCO_3$ was encapsulated by emulsion polymerization. 0.1 wt% of APS was added sequentially to minimize the formation of new monomer particle during shell polymerization. The structure of inorganic/organic core-shell particles were characterized by measuring the decomposition degree of $CaCO_3$ using HCl solution, thermogravimetric analyzer, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope.

  • A new model of the combustion rates of soot particle in turbulent flames has been suggested. This model applies the combustion rate of soot particles in laminar flames and uses local time-averaged quantities in order to consider the effect of the chemical reaction on the soot combustion in turbulent flames. The proposed rate equation has been tested for two propane-air turbulent round-jet diffusion flames and gives better predictions for the soot concentration field of two flames than the model previously used, especially in low temperature regions. A modified Monte carlo Method for analyzing radiative heat transfer of a flame also has been suggested and tested, which reveals good results.

  • In this study, the kg-class Ni-Al alloy fabrication process at low temperature was developed from the physical mixture of Ni and Al powders. The AlCl3 as an activator was used to reduce the temperature of alloy synthesis below the melting temperature of Ni and Al elements (<$500^{\circ}C$). Mixed phase of Ni3Al intermetallic and Ni-Al solid-solution were identified in the XRD pattern analysis. Furthermore, from the analysis of SEM and particle size analyzer, we found that the particle size of synthesized alloy powders was not changed compared to the initial size of Ni particle after the formation of alloy powder at $500^{\circ}C$. In the creep test, the anode (which was fabricated by the prepared Ni-Al alloy powders in this study) displayed the enhanced creep resistance compared to the conventional anode.

  • Pulverization characteristics of H-kenyaite in vibration mill and exfoliation property in epoxy of pulverized H-kenyaite was investigated by using XRD, SEM, TEM. and particle size analyzer. Pulverization was conducted for 0.5~5 h. The particle morphology of sample pulverized for 1 h preserved plate-shape. However, this plate-shape disappeared in the sample pulverized for 3 h. The XRD pattern of sample pulverized for 1 h showed the characteristic peak of H-kenyaite. However, the peak disappeared in samples pulverized above 3 h, indicating severe destruction of H-kenyaite structure. TEM analysis for the kenyaite/epoxy nanocomposites exhibited only gallery expansion of 3~5 nm in non-pulverized sample, but dramatical large expansion of 5~10 nm in the samples pulverized during 1 h. This results confirm that the pulverization of wide plates composed of H-kenyaite particle have largely affect on the formation of an exfoliated kenyaite-polymer nanocomposite.

  • Controlling synthesis conditions of ZnS:Cu,Al and ZnS:Cu electroluminescent phosphors we optimized particle size, color properties and efficiency. Surface properties were studied by new method and showed correlation with luminescence as shown by the analysis of EL spectra with Fok-Alentsev method. Luminance and maintenance improvement was achieved by the electron-beam annealing due to additional decomposition of $ZnS-Cu_{2}S$ solid solution and formation of centers of blue luminescence.
