  • Oscillatory magnetic fields produced in the brain due to neuronal activity can be measured by the sensor. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a non-invasive technique to record such neuronal activity due to excellent temporal and fair amount of spatial resolution, which gives information about the brain's functional activity. Potential utilization of high spatial resolution in MEG is likely to provide information related to in-depth brain functioning and underlying factors responsible for changes in neuronal waves in some diseases under resting state or task state. This review is a comprehensive report to introduce statistical models from MEG data including graphical network modelling. It is also meaningful to note that statisticians should play an important role in the brain science field.

  • This study proposed an approach of clustering collective users' activities of location-based social networks using check-in data of Foursquare users in Seoul. In order to cluster the collective activities, we generated sequential rules of the activities using sequential rule mining, and then constructed activity networks based on the rules. We analyzed the activity networks to identify network structure and hub activities, and clustered the activities within the networks. Unlike previous studies that analyzed activity transition patterns of location-based social network users, this study focused on analyzing the structure and clusters of successive activities. Hubs and clusters of activities with the approach proposed in this study can be used for location-based services and marketing. They could also be used in the public sector, such as infection prevention and urban policies.

  • During mitosis, genomic integrity is maintained by the proper coordination of anaphase entry and mitotic exit via mitotic checkpoints. In budding yeast, mitotic exit is controlled by a regulatory cascade called the mitotic exit network (MEN). The MEN is regulated by a small GTPase, Tem1p, which in turn is controlled by a two-component GAP, Bfa1p-Bub2p. Recent results suggested that phosphorylation of Bfa1p by the polorelated kinase Cdc5p is also required for triggering mitotic exit, since it decreases the GAP activity of Bfa1p-Bub2p. However, the dispensability of GEF Lte1p for mitotic exit has raised questions about regulation of the MEN by the GTPase activity of Tem1p. We isolated a Bfa1p mutant, $Bfa1p^{E438K}$, whose overexpression only partially induced anaphase arrest. The molecular and biochemical functions of $Bfa1p^{E438K}$ are similar to those of wild type Bfa1p, except for decreased GAP activity. Interestingly, in $BFA1^{E438K}$ cells, the MEN could be regulated with nearly wild type kinetics at physiological temperature, as well as in response to various checkpoint-activating signals, but the cells were more sensitive to spindle damage than wild type. These results suggest that the GAP activity of Bfa1p-Bub2p is responsible for the mitotic arrest caused by spindle damage and Bfa1p overproduction. In addition, the viability of cdc5-2 ${\Delta}bfa1 $ cells was not reduced by $BFA1^{E438K}$, suggesting that Cdc5p also regulates Bfa1p to activate mitotic exit by other mechanism(s), besides phosphorylation.

For the citation index research, studies to analyze influential big patent has been conducted, and for the network analysis research, studies to find out the flows of technology in a certain industry has been conducted. Social network analysis is applied not only in the sociology, but also in a field of management consulting and company's knowledge management. Research of how the company's network position has an impact on business performances has been conducted from various aspects in a field of network analysis. Social network analysis can be based on the visual forms. Network indicators are available through the quantitative analysis. Social network analysis is used when analyzing outcomes in terms of the position of network. Social network analysis focuses largely on centrality and structural holes. Centrality indicates that actors having central positions among other actors have an advantage to exert stronger influence for exchange relationship. Degree centrality, betweenness centrality and closeness centrality are used for centrality analysis. Structural holes refer to an empty place in social structure and are defined as efficiency and constraints. This study stresses and analyzes firms' network in terms of the patent and how network characteristics have an influence on business performances. For the purpose of doing this, seventy-four ICT companies listed in S&P500 are chosen for the sample. UCINET6 is used to analyze the network structural characteristics such as outdegree centrality, betweenness centrality and efficiency. Then, regression analysis test is conducted to find out how these network characteristics are related to business performance. It is found that each network index has significant impacts on net income, i.e. business performance. However, it is found that efficiency is negatively associated with business performance. As the efficiency increases, net income decreases and it has a negative impact on business performances. Furthermore, it is shown that betweenness centrality solely has statistically significance for the multiple regression analysis with three network indexes. The patent citation network analysis shows the flows of knowledge between firms, and it can be expected to contribute to company's management strategies by analyzing company's network structural positions.

  • Energy consumption of wireless access networks is in permanent increase, which necessitates development of more energy-efficient network management approaches. Such management schemes must result with adaptation of network energy consumption in accordance with daily variations in user activity. In this paper, we consider possible energy savings of wireless local area networks (WLANs) through development of a few integer linear programming (ILP) models. Effectiveness of ILP models providing energy-efficient management of network resources have been tested on several WLAN instances of different sizes. To cope with the problem of high computational time characteristic for some ILP models, we further develop several heuristic algorithms that are based on greedy methods and local search. Although heuristics obtains somewhat higher results of energy consumption in comparison with the ones of corresponding ILP models, heuristic algorithms ensures minimization of network energy consumption in an amount of time that is acceptable for practical implementations. This confirms that network management algorithms will play a significant role in practical realization of future energy-efficient network management systems.

  • In the telecommunication industry, estimation of the cost of network facilities is very important since depreciation cost of the facilities accounts for a large portion of the product cost. Moreover, cost estimation in the industry becomes more difficult because of increasing indirect cost upon digital convergence, expanding multi-purpose facilities, complexity of service product, etc. Nevertheless, not much seem to have been done in improving estimation methodology of the cost of network facilities. As a result, the quality of cost information on network facilities has deteriorated, and now even decision-makers in the industry dismiss the information. Recently, two major telecommunication companies adopted a new network cost estimation method to deal with the issue. In this paper, we study the concept of new cost estimation method and the procedure to develop and apply it. We also suggest the method to carry out the cost allocation using Matlab which is more efficient and time-saving than other commercial cost calculation packages.

  • The neural network is a mathematical model of theorized brain activity which attempts to exploit the parallel local processing and distributed storage properties. The neural metwork is a good model to be applied for the classification problem, large combinatorial optimization and nonlinear mapping. A multi-layer neural network is constructed to predict rainfall. The network learns continuourvalued input and output data. Application of neural network to 1-hour real data in Seoul metropolitan area and the Soyang River basin shows slightly good predictions. Therefore, when good data is available, the neural network is expected to predict the complicated rainfall successfully.

  • Although the functional ingredient has been evaluated by the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) based on scientific evidence, the levels of scientific evidence and consistency of the results might vary according to emerging data. Therefore, periodic re-evaluation may be needed for some functional ingredients. In this study, we re-evaluated scientific evidence for the antioxidant activity of coenzyme Q10 as a functional ingredient in health functional food. Literature searches were conducted using the Medline and Cochrane, KISS, and IBIDS databases for the years 1955-2010 with the search term of coenzyme Q10 in combination with antioxidant. The search was limited to human studies published in Korean, English, and Japanese. Using the KFDA's evidence based evaluation system for scientific evaluation of health claims, 33 human studies were identified and reviewed in order to evaluate the strength of the evidence supporting a relation between coenzyme Q10 and antioxidant activity. Among 33 studies, significant effects for antioxidant activities were reported in 22 studies and their daily intake amount was 60 to 300 mg. Based on this systematic review, we concluded that there was possible evidence to support a relation between coenzyme Q10 intake and antioxidant activities. However, because inconsistent results have recently been reported, future studies should be monitored.
