The capabilities of the near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) for obtaining high resolution lateral topographical images as well as for mapping the spectroscopic and optical properties of a sample below the diffraction limit of light have made it an attractive research field for most researchers dealing with optical characteristics of materials in nano scales. The apertured NSOM technique involves confining light into an aperture of sub-wavelength size and using it to illuminate a sample maintained at a distance equal to a fraction of the sub-wavelength aperture (near-field region). In this article, we present a setup for developing NSOM using a cantilever with a sub-wavelength aperture at the tip. A single laser is used for both cantilever deflection measurement and near-field sample excitation. The laser beam is focused at the apex of the cantilever where a portion of the beam is reflected and the other portion goes through the aperture and causes local near-field optical excitation of the sample, which is then raster scanned in the near-field region. The reflected beam is used for an optical beam deflection technique that yields topographical images by controlling the probe-sample in nano-distance. The fluorescence emissions signal is detected in far-field by the help of a silicon avalanche photodiode. The images obtained using this method show a good correlation between the topographical image and the mapping of the fluorescence emissions.
Using symplectic relation and reaction concept, we propose a planar near-field antenna measurement method. A generalized probe compensation equation is deduced to obtain the probe correction formulation. To verify our approach, a reflector antenna with $1{\times}2$ horn array is fabricated and measured in the near-field measurement facility. The near-field measurement results are compared with the physical optics (PO) simulation. The results of measurement and simulation agree very well near to the mainbeam.

Near field ground motions contain distinct, large amplitude pulses in both velocity and displacement. This paper presents an investigation on the characteristics of near filed earthquakes and their effects on seismic demands. For this purpose 20 sets of near field ground motion and 20 sets of far filed ground motion are compared with respect to Linear Elastic Response Spectrum(LERS), Response Modification Factor(R), Inelastic Response Spectrum(IRS), and performance point of Capacity Spectum Method(CSM).

The importance of stealth technology is increasing in modern warfare, and Radar Cross Section(RCS) is widely used as an indicator of stealth technology. It is useful to measure RCS using an image-based near-field to far-field transformation algorithm in short-range monostatic conditions. However, the near-field measurement system requires a longer measurement time compared to other methods. In this work, it is proposed to reduce the measured data using an interpolation method in azimuth angular domain. The calculated far-field RCS values according to the sampling rate is shown, and the performance of the algorithm applied with interpolation in the angular domain is presented. It is shown that measurement samples can be reduced several times by using the redundancy in the angular domain while producing results similar to the conventional method.
The enhancement of antenna near-field measurements is obtained using a general probe compensation equation based on the Lorentz reciprocity theorem and reciprocity notation. The probe compensation is an essential process of the near-field to far-field transformations. Applying the equation proposed in this paper to a planar scanning for a rectangular horn antenna shows that our near-field radiation pattern is similar to that of a far-field and our theory is very simple to use and suitable for most practical applications.

In this paper, we investigate field distribution and interference pattern in the exit pupil and in the focal region. Also, we compare with metal and dielectric substrate for near-field recording. To obtain field distribution, we use modified vector diffraction theory and Zernike Polynomials. Finally, we design and optimize refractive index and thickness of disk for near-field surface recording and cover-layer incident recording.

This research has been conducted in order to investigate the effects of peak ground velocity (PGV) of near-field earthquakes on base-isolated structures mounted on Single Friction Pendulum (SFP), Double Concave Friction Pendulum (DCFP) and Triple Concave Friction Pendulum (TCFP) bearings. Seismic responses of base-isolated structures subjected to simplified near field pulses including the forward directivity and the fling step pulses are considered in this study. Behaviour of a two dimensional single story structure mounting on SFP, DCFP and TCFP isolators investigated employing a variety range of isolators and the velocity (PGV) of the forward directivity and the fling step pulses as the main variables of the near field earthquakes. The maximum isolator displacement and base shear are selected as main seismic responses. Peak seismic responses of different isolator types are compared to emphasize the efficiency of each one under near field earthquakes. It is demonstrated that rising the PGVs increases the isolator displacement and base shear of structure. The effects of the forward directivity are greater than the fling step pulses. Furthermore, TCFP isolator is more effective to control the near field effects than the other friction pendulum isolators are. This efficiency is more significant in pulses with longer period and greater PGVs.
The need to accurate quantification of blast pressure loading in the near field is important because the focus of security design of critical infrastructure, buildings and bridges is for near-field detonations. Incident and reflected pressures for near-field detonations are very difficult to be measured by commercially available pressure transducers due to the high pressure and temperature, which requires a verified and validated computational fluid dynamics code to reasonably predict the near-field pressures and impulses. This paper presents numerical studies to verify and validate a CFD code for calculations of incident and reflected overpressures and impulses. The near field is emphasized and recommendations for mesh sizes to optimally simulate the near-field detonation are provided.
This paper discusses the near field characteristics of a dipole source located near conducting metallic walls from an electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) point of view. An integral equation for a dipole source near a metallic wall is derived and solved by applying Galerkin's method of moments (MoM). The results show that in the regions outside the dipole source, total electric near fields decrease gradually in magnitude with an increasing field point from the dipole source. But in the regions inside the dipole source, total electric near fields decrease rapidly with a dipole position of $h{\leq}0.3{\lambda}$. For a dipole position of $h{\geq}0.7{\lambda}$, the peaks and nulls of the total near electric field occur periodically in the regions inside the dipole source, and the fluctuation period is almost $0.5{\lambda}$. The worst position for a receptor location is along the z-axis, and a range of a half-magnitude of the maximum near electric field in the principal H-plane is about two times broader than that of the principal E-plane. Experimental measurements are also presented to validate the theory.

In order to simulate surface discharged heat dispersion in costal area, a 2-dimensional Eulerian-Lagrangian model for far field and semi-active particle tracking random walk model in near field has been combined. The mass of discharged heat water in near field has treated as particles with buoyancy and this is eventually converted to horizontal additive dispersion in random walk equations. This model is applied to both a simplified coastal geometry and a real site. In simple application it can simulate plume-like characteristics around discharging point than a near field-model, CORMIX/3. Actual application in the Chonsu Bay shows farther spreading of heat water in near field comparing the observed data, and this shows that the developed model might be applied with satisfaction.
