In this study, Explicit Algebraic Reynolds Stress Model (EARSM) which is based on the existing ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ model has been applied to the flow field analysis around ship hulls. Existing transport equations for the turbulent kinetic energy and the dissipation rate are used in almost the same form and anisotropy terms of Reynolds stresses are newly considered. The well-known KVLCC2 and KCS hull forms are selected as validation cases, which were also used in 2010 Workshop on CFD in Ship Hydrodynamics. In case of KVLCC2 double model, comparison of mean velocity distribution, turbulent kinetic energy, and Reynolds stresses near the propeller plane has been carried out and wave elevation and wave profiles have been additionally studied for KCS and KVLCC2 with free surface models. Some improved results for mean velocity distribution at the propeller plane have been obtained while there is little change in free surface wave profiles.
The effects of the air on the reductions in resistance when supplied under the bottom of a semi-planing ship with a step are investigated in the present study. A 1.275m long FRP model is constructed and the pressure and viscous tangential stresses over the planing surface of the hull with and without air supply are measured through measuring holes carefully selected at the towing tank of Seoul National University. Locations of holes most suitable for air injection are surveyed in front of the planing surface of the model with careful examinations of the limiting streamlines and pressure distributions measured without air supply. At those locations, found to be just front of the step, air has been supplied into a wake region to form an air filled cavity of fixed type. Flow rates and pressure of the supplied air as well as the local pressure and shear stress distributions on the hull surface are measured to understand the physics involved as well as to determine the conditions most effective in resistance reduction at the design speed. It has been found that total resistance of the stepped semi-planing hull can be considerably reduced if an air cavity generated by an adequate air injection at the bottom of the hull near the step. After the cavity optimized at the given speed, air bubbles also have been generated right behind the point where dividing streamlines re-attach to further reduce the frictional resistance but found to be not so effective as the air cavity in resistance reductions.
Velocity fields of near turbulent was behind a porous wind fence were measured using the 2-frame PTV method in a circulating water channel. The fences used in this study had different geometric porosity(.epsilon.) of 0, 20, 40 and 65%. The fence was embedded in a thin laminar boundary layer, i.e., .delta./H ~ = 0.1. Reynolds number based on the fence height H and free stream velocity(U$\_$o/) was about 8,400. As a result, a recirculating flow region was formed behind the fence for the .epsilon.=0% and 20% wind fence. For the wind fences having porosity larger than .epsilon.=40%, it was difficult to see separation bubbles behind the fence. The .epsilon.=20% porous fence reveals the maximum velocity reduction, however, the turbulent intensity and Reynolds shear stress are much greater than those of .epsilon.=40% fence. Among the wind fence tested in this study, the porous wind fence of .epsilon.=40% porosity is the most effective for abating wind erosion.

A computational study of vortex-induced transverse vibrations of a cylinder with low mass-damping is presented. An Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation of the Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (URANS), along with the Spalart-Allmaras (SA) one-equation turbulence model, are coupled conservatively with rigid body motion equations of the cylinder mounted on elastic supports in order to study the amplitude and frequency response of a freely vibrating cylinder, its flow-induced motion, Vortex Street, near-wake flow structure, and unsteady loading in a moderate range of Reynolds numbers. The time accurate response of the cylinder from rest to its limit cycle is studied to explore the effects of Reynolds number on the start of large displacements, motion amplitude, and frequency. The computational results are compared with published physical experiments and numerical studies. The maximum amplitudes of displacements computed for various Reynolds numbers are smaller than the experimental values; however, the overall agreement of the results is quite satisfactory, and the upper branch of the limit-cycle displacement amplitude vs. reduced velocity response is captured, a feature that was missed by other studies. Vortex shedding modes, lock-in phenomena, frequency response, and phase angles are also in agreement with experiments.
The experiment was performed at the large wind tunnel of the Chungnam National University to measure the velocity distribution around the stern of a Liquefied Natural Gas Carrier model. The data, mean velocity vectors of turbulent shear flows at the stern and near-wake including the propeller plane, were obtained by a five-hole Pilot tube for the double body model fixed inside the wind tunnel test section. The present result of the double body model shows a close agreement with the result of the lowing tank experiment performed by the KRISO for the same ship model. The characteristics of the LNG stern flow are discussed based on the measured velocity distribution. The data can be very useful for the validation of some numerical methods in computational fluid dynamics.

On the basis of the Computational Fluid Dynamics technique (CFD) combined with the overlap grid method, this paper establishes a numerical simulation method to study the problem of ice-propeller interaction in viscous flow and carries out a simulation forecast of the hydrodynamic performance of an ice-class propeller and flow characteristics when in the proximity of milling-shape ice (i.e., an ice block with a groove cut by a high-speed revolving propeller). We use a trimmed mesh in the entire calculation domain and use the overlap grid method to transfer information between the domains of propeller rotation calculation and ice-surface computing. The grid is refined in the narrow gap between the ice and propeller to ensure the accuracy of the flow field. Comparison with the results of the experiment reveals that the error of the hydrodynamic performance is within 5%. This confirms the feasibility of the calculation method. In this paper, we calculate the exciting force of the propeller, analyze the time domain of the exciting force, and obtain the curve of the frequency domain using a Fourier transform of the time-domain curve of the exciting force. The existence of milling-shape ice before the propeller can greatly disturb the wake flow field. Unlike in open water, the propeller bearing capacity shows a downward trend in three stages, and fluctuating pressure is more disordered near the ice.
Large Eddy Simulation (LES) has been popularly applied and used in the last several decades to simulate turbulent boundary layer in the numerical domain. A fully developed turbulent boundary layer has also been applied to predict the complicated wake flow behind bluff bodies. In this study we aimed to generate an artificial turbulent boundary layer, which is based on an exponential correlation function, and generates a series of realistic three-dimensional velocity data in two-dimensional inlet section which are correlated both in space and in time. The results suggest its excellent capability for high Reynolds number flows. To make an effective generation, a hexahedral mesh has been used and Cholesky decomposition was applied to possess suitable turbulent statistics such as the randomness and correlation of turbulent flow. As a result, the flow characteristics in the domain and fluctuating pressure near the wall are very close to those of fully developed turbulent boundary layers.

This work investigates the effects of transverse inclination on an aeroelastic prism through forced-vibration wind tunnel experiments. The aerodynamic characteristics are tri-parametrically evaluated under different wind speeds, inclination angles, and oscillation amplitudes. Results show that transverse inclination fundamentally changes the wake phenomenology by impinging the fix-end horseshoe vortex and breaking the separation symmetry. The aftermath is a bi-polar, one-and-for-all change in the aerodynamics near the prism base. The suppression of the horseshoe vortex unleashes the Kármán vortex, which significantly increases the unsteady crosswind force. After the initial morphology switch, the aerodynamics become independent of inclination angle and oscillation amplitude and depend solely on wind speed. The structure's upper portion does not feel the effect, so this phenomenon is called Base Intensification. The phenomenon only projects notable impacts on the low-speed and VIV regime and is indifferent in the high-speed. In practice, Base Intensification will disrupt the pedestrian-level wind environment from the unleashed Bérnard-Kármán vortex shedding. Moreover, it increases the aerodynamic load at a structure base by as much as 4.3 times. Since fix-end stiffness prevents elastic dissipation, the load translates to massive stress, making detection trickier and failures, if they are to occur, extreme, and without any warnings.
A high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was performed using the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model for the lower plenum of the High-Temperature Test Facility (HTTF), a ¼ scale test facility of the modular high temperature gas-cooled reactor (MHTGR) managed by Oregon State University. In most next-generation nuclear reactors, thermal stress due to thermal striping is one of the risks to be curiously considered. This is also true for HTGRs, especially since the exhaust helium gas temperature is high. In order to evaluate these risks and performance, organizations in the United States led by the OECD NEA are conducting a thermal hydraulic code benchmark for HTGR, and the test facility used for this benchmark is HTTF. HTTF can perform experiments in both normal and accident situations and provide high-quality experimental data. However, it is difficult to provide sufficient data for benchmarking through experiments, and there is a problem with the reliability of CFD analysis results based on Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes to analyze thermal hydraulic behavior without verification. To solve this problem, high-fidelity 3-D CFD analysis was performed using the LES model for HTTF. It was also verified that the LES model can properly simulate this jet mixing phenomenon via a unit cell test that provides experimental information. As a result of CFD analysis, the lower the dependency of the sub-grid scale model, the closer to the actual analysis result. In the case of unit cell test CFD analysis and HTTF CFD analysis, the volume-averaged sub-grid scale model dependency was calculated to be 13.0% and 9.16%, respectively. As a result of HTTF analysis, quantitative data of the fluid inside the HTTF lower plenum was provided in this paper. As a result of qualitative analysis, the temperature was highest at the center of the lower plenum, while the temperature fluctuation was highest near the edge of the lower plenum wall. The power spectral density of temperature was analyzed via fast Fourier transform (FFT) for specific points on the center and side of the lower plenum. FFT results did not reveal specific frequency-dominant temperature fluctuations in the center part. It was confirmed that the temperature power spectral density (PSD) at the top increased from the center to the wake. The vortex was visualized using the well-known scalar Q-criterion, and as a result, the closer to the outlet duct, the greater the influence of the mainstream, so that the inflow jet vortex was dissipated and mixed at the top of the lower plenum. Additionally, FFT analysis was performed on the support structure near the corner of the lower plenum with large temperature fluctuations, and as a result, it was confirmed that the temperature fluctuation of the flow did not have a significant effect near the corner wall. In addition, the vortices generated from the lower plenum to the outlet duct were identified in this paper. It is considered that the quantitative and qualitative results presented in this paper will serve as reference data for the benchmark.
