  • This study aims to find some characteristics for the facilities of the 'Korea Forest Welfare for Life Cycle' through the domestic case analysis, so that we draw implications applicable to the policy on Korea Forest Welfare. For this, we brought and analyzed statistical data together from scattered sources. As the characteristics for the facilities of the Korea Forest Welfare for Life Cycle, first, there is the quantitative imbalance of forest welfare institutions for the each life cycle. Second, there is a lack of facilities in urban areas. Third, the facilities are mostly located in national or public forests. And, based on those characteristics, we suggest several things as follows that is applicable to the related policy. First, it is necessary to meet the needs of facilities that need to be built evenly for each life-cycle. Second, facilities of the Forest Welfare for Life Cycle which is adjacent to the life zone should be built more to increase accessibility. Third, forests in Korea are almost comprised of private forests. Using only national and public forests has an unfavorable condition to confer a benefits of forest welfare on the people evenly than using national, public and private forests all together. Therefore, there is a need to invigorate private capital and utilize private forests so that the favorable condition can be made to confer a benefits of forest welfare on the people evenly and adjust balance of the quantity for the facilities of forest welfare.

  • To investigate the effects of national forest management on the regional community, the inter-relationship between the local communities and neighbouring forest owned by the state was surveyed in the three locations, namely pyungchang-gun, Bonghwa-gun, and Kwangyang-gun, which have a large area of national forest. The effect of national forest management on the local community was different depending upon the relationship between the local community and the national forest, the resource base and infrastructure and facilities installed within the national forest. The major contribution of the national forest to regional society is the provision of land resources, forest products, employment opportunities, and social functions of forest. The supply of land resource from the national forest has been increasing steadily due to the increase in demand for public facilities. About one quarter of household income in the forest villages surveyed came out of the sales of forest products, mainly non-timber products. Due to the low level of forest operations for timber production, there are very limited opportunities of employment provided by the national forest. And the use of forest roads by local residents was also to a limited extent. Therefore, it is suggested that the national frosts should be managed such that help to revive the economy of local communities which are disadvantaged in the national investment priority due to the low economic returns.

  • This study aims to study the definition and characteristics of forest biomass as an alternative energy and to estimate the energy potential and feasibility of forest biomass utilization in domestic. Especially, significant attention is given to woody biomass such as forest residue, thinning log, etc. due to their renewable, sustainable and abundant properties. The results were summarized as follows. The utilization of these forest biomass could play an important role to activate the forest industry and increase the public benefit functions of forest, but more attention on their utilization is required and how they can be utilize more efficiently is the new task assigned to our forestry for sustainable forest management.

  • The study analyze Conifer and Hardwood area and their distribution to seek an efficient survey for Experimental Forest of Kangwon National University using Landsat-5 TM data. Through forest cover types, we try to study on the possibility to use Satellite Data. development of Satellite Interpretation Skill and Digital Mapping Method. As analysis tools we use IMAGINE 8.3 and ArcView 3.0 software. The result showed that Hardwood took approximately 73%, 2,224ha of the total 3,058ha and Conifer takes 27%, 832ha.
