Si nanowire/multiwalled carbon nanotube nanocomposite arrays were synthesized. Vertically aligned Si nanowire arrays were fabricated by Ag nanodendrite-assisted wet chemical etching of n-type wafers using $HF/AgNO_3$ solution. The composite structure was synthesized by formation of a sheath of carbon multilayers on a Si nanowire template surface through a thermal CVD process under various conditions. The results of Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and high resolution transmission electron microcopy demonstrate that the obtained nanocomposite has a Si nanowire core/carbon nanotube shell structure. The remarkable feature of the proposed method is that the vertically aligned Si nanowire was encapsulated with a multiwalled carbon nanotube without metal catalysts, which is important for nanodevice fabrication. It can be expected that the introduction of Si nanowires into multiwalled carbon nanotubes may significantly alter their electronic and mechanical properties, and may even result in some unexpected material properties. The proposed method possesses great potential for fabricating other semiconductor/CNT nanocomposites.

The artificial shells of hard inorganic nanocomposites on individual cells would protect the cells physically and chemically, and control cell division. These emerging properties could be combined with cell-surface functionalizations for applications to cell-based sensors and assays as well as for fundamental studies on single-cell biology. In this work, individual Chlorella cells were encapsulated within a silica/titania nanocomposite shell in a biocompatible fashion that utilized a designed peptide, RKKRKKRKKRKKDDDDDDDD, as a catalytic template for formation of both $SiO_2$ and $TiO_2$ on the cell surface. The cell viability was maintained, and the division of the encapsulated Chlorella cells was controlled. The cell viability was enhanced compared with the $TiO_2$-shell formation. In addition, the incorporation of $TiO_2$ to the shell made it possible to anchor the ligands of interest to the shell via catechol chemistry. All in all, the combination of biological $SiO_2$ and abiolgical $TiO_2$ for the shell formation gave more tunability of the artificial shells compared with the $SiO_2$ or $TiO_2$ shells only.
Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/montmorillonite (MMT) clay nanocomposite microspheres with a core/shell structure have been developed via a suspension polymerization approach. In order to prepare the PVAc/ MMT and PVAc/PVA/MMT nanocomposite microspheres, which are promising precursor of PVA/MMT nanocomposite microspheres, suspension polymerization of vinyl acetate with organophilic MMT and heterogeneous saponification were conducted. A quaternary ammonium salt, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, was mixed with the MMT in the monomer phase prior to the suspension polymerization. The rate of conversion decreased with an increase in MMT concentration. The incorporation of MMT into the PVAc was verified by FT-IR spectroscopy. Organic vinyl acetate monomers were intercalated into the interlayer regions of organophilic clay hosts and followed by suspension polymerization. Partially saponified PVA/MMT nanocomposite microspheres with a core/shell structure were successfully prepared by heterogeneous saponification.

This work addresses the free vibration analysis of Functionally Graded Porous (FGP) nanocomposite truncated conical shells with Graphene PLatelet (GPL) reinforcement. In this study, three different distributions for porosity and three different dispersions for graphene platelets have been considered in the direction of the shell thickness. The Halpin-Tsai equations are used to find the effective material properties of the graphene platelet reinforced materials. The equations of motion are derived based on the higher-order shear deformation theory and Sanders's theory. The Fourier Differential Quadrature (FDQ) technique is implemented to solve the governing equations of the problem and to obtain the natural frequencies of the truncated conical shell. The combination of FDQ with higher-order shear deformation theory allows a very accurate prediction of the natural frequencies. The precision and reliability of the proposed method are verified by the results of literature. Moreover, a wide parametric study concerning the effect of some influential parameters, such as the geometrical parameters, porosity distribution, circumferential wave numbers, GPLs dispersion as well as boundary restraint conditions on free vibration response of FGP-GPL truncated conical shell is also carried out and investigated in detail.
In this research, seismic response of pipes is examined by applying nanotechnology and piezoelectric materials. For this purpose, a pipe is considered which is reinforced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and covered with a piezoelectric layer. The structure is subjected to the dynamic loads caused by earthquake and the governing equations of the system are derived using mathematical model via cylindrical shell element and Mindlin theory. Navier-Stokes equation is employed to calculate the force due to the fluid in the pipe. Mori-Tanaka approach is used to estimate the equivalent material properties of the nanocomposite and to consider the effect of the CNTs agglomeration on the scismic response of the structure. Moreover, the dynamic displacement of the structure is extracted using harmonic differential quadrature method (HDQM) and Newmark method. The main goal of this research is the analysis of the seismic response using piezoelectric layer and nanotechnology. The results indicate that reinforcing the pipeline by CNTs leads to a reduction in the displacement of the structure during an earthquake. Also the negative voltage applied to the piezoelectric layer reduces the dynamic displacement.
The dependence of the IR optical properties of PMMA/$Al_2O_3$ nanocomposite on the alumina content was investigated in the wavelength range of $3500-2800cm^{-1}$. The samples were prepared via emulsion polymerization technique using oleic acid as a coupling agent. Grafting density calculations were carried out by means of elemental analysis CHN to yield the best coupling agent content. FTIR analysis confirmed the existence of a chemical bond between aluminum oxide and oleic acid. The outcomes of XRD analyses showed the presence of cubic gamma aluminum oxide in the nanocomposite, in contrast to the amorphous nature of PMMA. TEM images showed the core-shell morphology of the particles other than pristine PMMA. Optical constants of the nanocomposite were calculated based on FTIR spectra and the Kramers-Kronig equations. The presence of nano alumina modified some of the optical indexes in IR region.
Magnetic and conducting aniline sulfide resin cross-linked (ASC-Fe3O4) nanocomposite has been prepared in the presence of aniline sulfide resin (ASR), aniline, $Fe_3O_4$ coated by polyethylene glycol (PEG) and initiator. The magnetic properties of the resulting composites showed ferromagnetic behavior, such as high-saturated magnetization (Ms= 41 emu/g), and coercive force (Hc=1.5 Oe). The saturated magnetization was increased by increasing of $Fe_3O_4$ content and decreased by increasing aniline ratio. The transmission electron micrograph (TEM) and X-ray diffraction proved that nanometer-sized about 20-30 nm $Fe_3O_4$ in the composite. The average size of ASC-$Fe_3O_4$ nanocomposite with core-shell structure was about 50-60 nm, and polydisperse. This approach may also be extended to the synthesis and modification of other polymers. Electrical conductivity of aniline sulfide resin cross-linked (ASC) nanocomposite has been studied by four-point probe method and produced $3.3{\times}10^{-4}S/cm$ conductivity for it. The conductivity of the composites at room temperature depended on the $Fe_3O_4$, aniline ratio and doping degree. The thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) results showed that this resin is thermal resistance near of $500^{\circ}C$. So, It can be used for resistance thermal coating for military applications. $Fe_3O_4$-PASC nanocomposite has been flexible structure with electrical and magnetic properties.
The thermal buckling temperature values of the graded carbon nanotube reinforced composite shell structure is explored using higher-order mid-plane kinematics and multiscale constituent modeling under two different thermal fields. The critical values of buckling temperature including the effect of in-plane thermal loading are computed numerically by minimizing the final energy expression through a linear isoparametric finite element technique. The governing equation of the multiscale nanocomposite is derived via the variational principle including the geometrical distortion through Green-Lagrange strain. Additionally, the model includes different grading patterns of nanotube through the panel thickness to improve the structural strength. The reliability and accuracy of the developed finite element model are varified by comparison and convergence studies. Finally, the applicability of present developed model was highlight by enlighten several numerical examples for various type shell geometries and design parameters.
In this paper, dynamic buckling of truncated conical shell made of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite is studied. In aerospace industries, this category of structures is utilized extensively due to wide range of engineering applications. To calculate the effective material properties of the nanocomposite, The Mori-Tanaka model is applied. Also, the motion equations are derived with the assistance of the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT), Hamilton's principle and energy method. Besides, In order to solve motion equations and analyze dynamic instability region (DIR) of the structure, mixed model of differential quadrature method (DQM) and Bolotin's method is used. Moreover, investigation of the different parameters effects such as geometrical parameters and volume fraction of CNTs on the analysis of the DIR of the structure is done. In accordance with the obtained results, the DIR will occur at higher frequencies by increasing the volume fraction of CNTs.
Based on a four-variable shear deformation shell theory, the free vibration analysis of functionally graded graphene platelet-reinforced composite (FGGPRC) doubly-curved shallow shells with different boundary conditions is investigated in this work. The doubly-curved shells are composed of multi nanocomposite layers that are reinforced with graphene platelets. The graphene platelets are uniformly distributed in each individual layer. While, the volume faction of the graphene is graded from layer to other in accordance with a novel distribution law. Based on the suggested distribution law, four types of FGGPRC doubly-curved shells are studied. The present shells are assumed to be rested on elastic foundations. The material properties of each layer are calculated using a micromechanical model. Four equations of motion are deduced utilizing Hamilton's principle and then converted to an eigenvalue problem employing an analytical method. The obtained results are checked by introducing some comparison examples. A detailed parametric investigation is performed to illustrate the influences of the distribution type of volume fraction, shell curvatures, elastic foundation stiffness and boundary conditions on the vibration of FGGPRC doubly-curved shells.
