  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on the activity of the upper trapezius and erector spinae according to the length difference of the backpack using electromyogram (EMG). We also conducted a study comparing the center of pressure (COP) and weight distribution before and after using Wii® balance board. Thirty individuals were randomly assigned to the experimental group (n=14) wearing a backpack with a short right strap length and a control group (n=16) wearing a backpack with the same strap length. Data were collected by dividing into groups, carring a 15% weight backpack and walking for 20 minutes on a treadmill. As a result of analyzing the EMG data, there was no significant change in the upper extremity muscle activity of the control group, but it was significantly decreased in the right upper trapezius activity of the experimental group (p<0.05). In addition, there was a significant change of COP in the experimental group (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference of the weight distribution in both groups. Recognizing mechanical changes in the body that may occur due to the asymmetry of the strap length is thought to be helpful for systematic ergonomic intervention according to changes in the external environment in the future.

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare muscle activation of the trunk and lower limbs of subjects wearing high-heeled or flat shoes while crossing over obstacles of different heights. METHODS: Twenty subjects participated in this study. While wearing high-heeled shoes (7 cm) or flat shoes (0 cm), the subjects were asked to cross over obstacles of different heights (10%, 20%, and 30% of their lower-limb length). Muscle activation of the trunk and lower limbs with the supported side while crossing over obstacles of different heights was measured using the electromyogram (Noraxon, DTS, Germany). Two-way repeated ANOVA was used to compare the muscle activation between high-heel shoes and flat shoes while crossing over obstacles of different heights. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS ver. 21, and p-values less than .05 were used to identify significant differences. RESULTS: As an obstacle's height increased, muscle activation of the trunk and lower limbs with the supported side was increased while wearing either type of shoe, and it was generally higher while wearing high-heeled shoes. However, tibialis anterior muscle activity while wearing high-heeled shoes was lower than while wearing flat shoes. CONCLUSION: This study showed that muscle activation of the trunk and lower limbs was higher when subjects wore high-heeled shoes than when they wore flat shoes while crossing over obstacles of different heights. Therefore, high-heeled shoes can easily cause high muscle fatigue of the trunk and lower limbs, and the TA muscle may weaken in persons who wear high-heeled shoes.

  • PURPOSE: This study examined the muscle activity while stepping over obstacles with various heights and widths to provide basic data for training and preventing falls. METHODS: Fifteen normal young adults (seven males and eight females) were recruited. The participants walked on a 5m walkway with six obstacles. The heights of obstacles were 0%, 10%, and 40% of the subject's leg length, and the width of the obstacles was 7cm and 14cm. The participants traversed the course twice per obstacle. The muscle activities of the soleus, tibialis anterior (TA), vastus medialis (VM), and vastus lateralis (VL) were measured using surface electromyography. A Mann-Whitney test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to examine the differences between obstacles. RESULTS: The muscle activities of the VL and the soleus of the stance leg and lead leg after crossing over the obstacles increased with increasing width, and there were significant differences in muscle activities between obstacle width (p<.05) except for the muscle activity of TA of the stance leg after crossing over the obstacles. A significant difference in muscle activities was observed according to the height of the obstacles with 14 cm (p<.05) except for the muscle activity of the VL, soleus of the leading leg, and TA of the stance leg CONCLUSION: The role of the VL and Soleus increased with increasing obstacle width, and the overall muscle activities of the lower extremities increased with increasing obstacle height. These results can be used to suggest a program to prevent falls.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the bridge exercise posture for the efficient exercise by comparing the muscle activity of the lower limbs according to the changes in muscle length because of knee angle in bridge exercise. The subjects of this study were 9 randomly selected males in their 20s living in D city from those who satisfied inclusion criteria. The measured muscles were Vastus medialis oblique, Vastus lateralis, Semitendinosus, Biceps femoris, Gluteus maximus, Gluteus medius, Tensor faciae latae, and Adductor longus. Data were analyzed through paired comparison test. In the result, ST, BF, and TFL muscle activities were high when knee joint flexion angle was $90^{\circ}$ Although in most cases higher muscle activity was shown at $90^{\circ}$ than $60^{\circ}$ there was no statistical significance. Interestingly, it was lower at $90^{\circ}$ than $60^{\circ}$ in VL. In ST, BF, and TFL, it was significantly higher at $90^{\circ}$ than $60^{\circ}$ (p<.05). Conclusively, knee angles in bridge exercise may affect the muscle activity, and in particular when the activity of two joint muscles such as semimenbranosus muscle, biceps femoris muscle, and tensor fasciae latae muscle increase as the angle gets higher. Therefore, it is considered that this study will provide helpful tips to develop muscular strength enforcement program for the patients with damages in the lower limbs through bridge exercise in clinical situations.

  • Increased interest in alternative approach to thoractomy has developed because of the considerable morbidity associated with the standard posterolateral thoracotomy[ST]. Muscle sparing thoracotomy is appeared as excellent alternative because of less postoperative pain and morbidity than standard posterolateral one. Vertical axillary muscle sparing thoracotomy[VM] is the newly revised modified muscle sparing thoracotomy that overcomes the disadvantages of previous lateral muscle sparing thoracotomy such as seroma, cosmetic problems, and need of subcutaneous drains. We conducted a prospective study of 45 consecutive patients to compare postoperative pain, muscle strength of serratus anterior and latissimus dorsi, and range of motion of the shoulder girdle between ST and VM group. There were no difference in preoperative status, surgical procedure, morbidity, mortality and hospital stay between two groups. But there were significant less postoperative narcotics requirements, more preserved latissimus dorsi and serratus anterior muscle strength, nd larger range of motion of shoulder girdle [ especially flexion and internal rotation in VM group. The opening time was prolonged[p<0.01] but closing time was less in VM group [p<0.01]. The sum of opening and closing time was not different in two group. The length of incision line was shorter in VM group. The vertical skin incision was concealed by the upper arm.In conclusion vertical axillary muscle sparing thoracotomy is good alternative for various intrathoracic procedures with less postoperative pain, well preserved muscle strength, increased range of motion of the shoulder girdle and impressive cosmetic outcome.

  • The general treatment methods of chronic osteomyelitis of calcaneus with soft tissue defect was curettage of necrotic bone with antibiotics mixed bone cement insertion or cancellous bone grafting, and free or pedicled flap coverage. The muscle flap for soft tissue defect has many advantages including control of infection, but in cases of pedicled flap in calcaneus, there are some limitations because of functional loss of the donor site, limitation of pedicled length of donor muscle In these reason, free muscle flap was more preferred for pedicled muscle flap. But, in case of small sized defect which was located in center or lateral side of calcaneus, the abductor digiti minimi muscle flap can be one of the solutions. The abductor digiti minimi muscle flap has minimal functional loss of donor site and can be performed easily. There are some reports of the abductor digiti minimi muscle flap in other country, but in korea, this report is the first case report of the abductor digiti minimi muscle flap. We performed one case of abductor digiti minimi muscle flap as a treatment of chronic osteomyelitis of calcaneus and could obtain a good result.

  • The objectives of this work here focus on the differences in responses to multiple cyclic tests of different sections along the length of the same tendon. Tendon specimens were obtained from the hindlimbs of canines and frozen to -70$^{\circ}C$. After thawing, specimens were mounted in the immersion bath at room temperature (22$^{\circ}C$) , preloaded to 0.13 N and then subjected to 3% or 4% of the initial length at a strain rate of 5%/sec. It was found that different sections of the same long tendons had different resistances to deformation. In general, the bone end sections were stiffer and carried greater loads for a given strain than the muscle end sections, and the mid-portions were the least stiff and carried the smallest loads for a given strain. The results of this study offer new information about the mechanical responses of collagenous tissues. We know more about their responses to multiple cyclic extensions and how their responses are different from the positions along the length of the tendon specimen. The nature and causes of these differences in the stiffness are not fully known. However, it is clear that differences in the mechanical response of tendons and other connective tissues are significant to musculoskeletal performance.

  • Previous studies have postulated that isometric animals exert similar locomotory capacity (speed, distance) because the amount of energy available for the motion would be the same regardless of body mass (m). To test propriety of this theory, we examined body shape and take-off potential of two frog species, Rana nigromaculata (powerful jumpers) and Bombina orientalis (slow hoppers). Morphological measurements included thigh muscle mass (indicative of total muscle force), hindlimb length (L, determining acceleration distance), and interilial width (shaping take-off motion). To gauge locomotory capacity, take-off speed (v) and take-off angle ($\theta$) were measured from video analyses, and jump distance (R) and take-off Power ($P_{t}$ ) were calculated from equations $R=V^{2}sin2\theta/g$ and ($P_{t}$$㎷^{3}/2L$(where g is the gravitational constant). Scaling exponents of morphometric variables for both species were 0.96-1.11 for thigh muscle mass, 0.28-0.29 for hindlimb length, and 0.30-0.36 for interilial width. Scaling exponents of locomotory performance for the two species were -0.01-0.14 for take-off speed, 0.24-0.31 for jump distance, and 0.66-0.84 for take-off power. The results demonstrate that the frogs of this study showed isometric body shape within species, but that take-off response changed allometrically with body mass, indicating that these data did not fully support the previous proposition. An exception was found in take-off speed of B. orientalis, in which the speed changed little with body mass (slope=-0.01). These findings suggest that the energy availability approach did not properly explain the apparent allometric relations of the take-off response in these animals and that an alternative model such as a power production approach may be worth addressing.
