Tomographic Reconstruction of Two-Phase Flows

  • Tomography has been investigated to observe bubble behaviors in two-phase flows. A bubbly flow and an annular flow have been reconstructed by tomography methods such as an algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) and a multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART) . Computer synthesized phantom fields have been used to calculate asymmetric density distributions for limited cases of 3, 5, and 7 projection angles. As a result of comparison of two tomography methods, the MART method has shown a significant improvement in the reconstruction accuracy for analysis of the two-phase flows.

  • Algebraic reconstruction technique (ART)과 multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART)이라는 토모그래피 방법을 이용하여 2상유동에서 기포의 거동을 배침투적으로 분석하였다. 먼저, 컴퓨터 합성 영상장으로 환상유통과 기포유동을 제작하여 2차원 단면의 재건을 시도하였다. 2상유동의 보다 정확한 결과들을 얻기 위하여 두가지 토모그래피 방법이 비교되었다. 그리고, 2상유동에서 기포의 거동을 3차원으로 분석하기 위하여 2개와 3개의 기포가 존재하는 3차원 합성 영상장으로부터 2차원 단면에서 보다 정확한 결과를 보인 MART 재건법에 의해서 밀도 분포 해석을 수행하였다.

  • Bubble behaviors in a circular tube have been analyzed numerically and experimentally by a three-dimensional tomography method, Initially, a multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART) which showed better results for previous studies of numerical simulations has been performed to confirm the accuracy of the three-dimensional reconstruction for the two-phase flow using a computer-synthesized phantom, Then, bubble behaviors have been investigated experimentally by the three-dimensional MART method using real projected data captured simultaneously by a laser and three CCD cameras for three angles of view, Also, the transient reconstructions have been attempted to analyze the real-time oxygen-bubble movements in water by the interval of 1/30 second.

  • Transient and asymmetric density distributions have been investigated by three-dimensional digital speckle tomography. Multiple CCD images captured movements of speckles in three angles of view simultaneously because the flows were asymmetric and transient. The speckle movements between no flow and downward butane flow from a circular half opening have been calculated by a cross-correlation tracking method so that those distances can be transferred to deflection angles of laser rays for density gradients. The three-dimensional density fields have been reconstructed from the deflection angles by a real-time multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART).

  • Three dimensional density distributions of impinging and eccentric flames have been investigated by digital speckle tomography. The flames have been ignited by a mixture of butane and air from a circular nozzle and impinged against a plate located at the upper side of the burner exit. For comparison with experimental data, computer synthesized phantoms of impinging and eccentric flames have been reconstructed by a developed three-dimensional multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART). The advanced reconstruction in the stagnation flow region involved the sharp change of the flow direction and pressure gradient has been developed using a cross-correlation method and new scanning technique for the speckle displacement.

  • 석유 연료 고갈 해결 및 온실 효과 가스 배풀 저감을 위한 방안으로 제시되는 수소는 다양한 에너지 저장체로 사용되어 질 수 있으나 안전성에 대한 연구가 요구되어진다. 따라서, 일반적인 저장 형태인 고압 저장 탱크에서 누출이 되었을 경우 분사되는 수소의 거동에 대한 연구가 이루어져야하며 이를 바탕으로 한 보완책이 제시되어야 한다. 이번 연구에서는 누설 시 확산되는 수소의 밀도를 실제 거동과 유사한 3차원 컴퓨터 영상장으로 합성한 후 ART(algebraic reconstruction technique) 및 MART(multiplicative ART)를 기반으로 한 3차원 디지털 스페클 토모그래피 기법을 개발하여 재건하고 분석하였다.

  • 3차원 디지털 스펙클 토모그래피를 개발하여 레이저 영상 신호로부터 비정상, 비대칭 부탄 유동의 밀도분포를 분석하였다. 이러한 유동 해석을 위해 3가지 각도에서 CCD 영상으로부터 스펙클의 이동 신호를 획득하여 유동이 없을 때와 있을 때의 스펙클 변화를 상호 상관법에 의해 계산하였다. 이 때 스펙클의 이동 신호는 유동의 밀도 구배에 따라 굴절각으로 변환될 수 있다. 그 굴절각을 적분하여 광선의 주름 변이를 얻고 이로부터 실시간 곱셈산술재건법(MART)을 이용하여 부탄의 3차원 밀도장 재건을 수행하였다.

  • Three-dimensional density distributions of an impinging and eccentric flame have been analyzed numerically and experimentally by a combined optical system with a digital speckle tomography. The flame has been ignited by premixed butane/air from air holes and impinged vertically against a plate located at the upper side of tile burner nozzle. In order to compare with experimental data, computer synthesized phantoms of impinging and eccentric flames have been made and reconstructed by a developed three-dimensional multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART). A new scanning technique has been developed for the analysis of speckle displacements to investigate wall jet regions of the impinging flame including sharp variation of the flow direction and pressure gradient. The reconstructed temperatures have been compared with a temperature photography by an infrared camera and results of numerical analysis using a finite-element method.

컴퓨터토모그래피 레이저흡수분광법(CT-TDLAS) 기반 2차원 온도분포 산정 Two-Ratios-of-Three-Peaks (2R3P) 알고리듬 개발 (2D Temperature Measurement of CT-TDLAS by Using Two-Ratios-of-Three-Peaks Algorithm)

  • In order to improve the performance of temperature field measurements by CT-TDLAS (Computer Tomography Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy), a new reconstruction algorithm, named two-ratios-of-three-peaks method is proposed in this paper. Further, two methods for selecting appropriate initial values of the iterative calculation of CT-TDLAS are proposed. One is MLOS (multiplicative line of sight) method and the other one is ALOS (additive line of sight) method. Two-ratios-of-three-peaks (2R3P) algorithm combined with MART (multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique) is finally developed for the enhancements of reconstructive calculations. The results have been compared with those obtained by the conventional one-ratio-of-two-peaks (1R2P) algorithm. In order to evaluate the performance of this algorithm, numerical test has been performed using phantom Gaussian temperature distributions with $11{\times}11$ square mesh. The performance of the constructed algorithm has been demonstrated by comparing the results obtained in actual burner experiments with those obtained by thermocouples. It has been verified that 2R3P algorithm with MART and MLOS showed best performance than that of 1R2P algorithm.

Tomography Reconstruction of Ionospheric Electron Density with Empirical Orthonormal Functions Using Korea GNSS Network

  • In South Korea, there are about 80 Global Positioning System (GPS) monitoring stations providing total electron content (TEC) every 10 min, which can be accessed through Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) for scientific use. We applied the computerized ionospheric tomography (CIT) algorithm to the TEC dataset from this GPS network for monitoring the regional ionosphere over South Korea. The algorithm utilizes multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART) with an initial condition of the latest International Reference Ionosphere-2016 model (IRI-2016). In order to reduce the number of unknown variables, the vertical profiles of electron density are expressed with a linear combination of empirical orthonormal functions (EOFs) that were derived from the IRI empirical profiles. Although the number of receiver sites is much smaller than that of Japan, the CIT algorithm yielded reasonable structure of the ionosphere over South Korea. We verified the CIT results with NmF2 from ionosondes in Icheon and Jeju and also with GPS TEC at the center of South Korea. In addition, the total time required for CIT calculation was only about 5 min, enabling the exploration of the vertical ionospheric structure in near real time.
