Perceptions of High-School Students and Science Teachers about Science-Technology-Society(STS) (고등학생들과 과학교사들의 과학-기술-사회(STS)에 대한 인식 조사)

  • Various modern social problems are also related with science and technology. Thorough understanding about Technology-Society(STS) interactions is required to take informed action about how to deal effectively with these problems. In this case, there is a need for STS education. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of high -school students and science teachers about Technology-Society interactions and differences of their perceptions. It is my hope that this thesis will contribute to future "General Science" class in Korea. We obtained the data by a survey of 414 high school students who took "General Science" courses in Seoul and 54 of their science teachers. The survey was made using 10 multiple-choice items selected from the VOSTS (Views On Science-Technology-Society) item pool. The results of this study are as follow: 1. More than half of the students and teachers thought that science is exploring the unknown and discovering new things. Their perceptions about the science are somewhat stable, but about the technology various. 2. Most students and teachers thought that science and technology interact and complement each other. They also thought that the improvement in the quality of life needs investments in both science and technology 3. Most students and teachers thought social facts as community, government, and politics influenced scientists and scientific research. They also had a good understanding about the effects of science and technology on society. We can conclude from this that they had a Science-Technology-Society oriented viewpoint. 4. There are significant differences between the perceptions of boys and girls in following categories (p<.05): Influence of Community or Government Agencies on Scientists Influence of Politics on Scientists Role of Scieoce/Technology in Resolving Social Problems 5.   • Although the related regulations or guidelines are not specified in the defense weapon system R&D process, R&D authorities frequently encounter problems that require rational decision-making. If the rational process is not applied in the matter of alternative choice, the project could be disrupted, which can result in longer project periods or more resource provision. In particular, a variety of decision-making methods are needed for test&evaluation of missile R&D. The issue of selecting a test site is one of the representative decision-making problems. If it is needed to determine the priority of multiple sites, Delphi Method and Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) will be applied. However, if the input of cost is to be considered, Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA) is more valuable to solve the problem. This paper proposes a solution to handle quantitatively various decision-making problems that can occur in missile flight test, and shows how DEA is applied through a simulated case study of selecting a foreign test site.

Comparative analysis of Bayesian and maximum likelihood estimators in change point problems with Poisson process

  • Nowadays the application of change point analysis has been indispensable in a wide range of areas such as quality control, finance, environmetrics, medicine, geographics, and engineering. Identification of times where process changes would help minimize the consequences that might happen afterwards. The main objective of this paper is to compare the change-point detection capabilities of Bayesian estimate and maximum likelihood estimate. We applied Bayesian and maximum likelihood techniques to formulate change points having a step change and multiple number of change points in a Poisson rate. After a signal from c-chart and Poisson cumulative sum control charts have been detected, Monte Carlo simulation has been applied to investigate the performance of Bayesian and maximum likelihood estimation. Change point detection capacities of Bayesian and maximum likelihood estimation techniques have been investigated through simulation. It has been found that the Bayesian estimates outperforms standard control charts well specially when there exists a small to medium size of step change. Moreover, it performs convincingly well in comparison with the maximum like-lihood estimator and remains good choice specially in confidence interval statistical inference.

  • Even though computer based college lecture management system was developed long ago and has been used ever since, developing perfect lecture management is not simple. The main objective of this system is to develop appropriate online lecture supportive management program suitable for college lectures. This system [ADLEMS] mainly focuses on the management of college database lectures, exams, and grades. This system supports management and grading of attendance, reports, quizzes, mid-term, and final exams. Exam management categorizes into multiple choice questions, essay questions, short answer questions, and SQL. Especially for SQL, division analysis was applied when developing grading system for more effective grade management. For essay questions and short answer questions, manual [hand] grading method was used. Every student can verify the grading process in person to alleviate the problems occurring during the grading process.

  • This study is aiming to structure progressive instructional strategy for development of constructivist-thinking into the beginning stage, developmental stage, and advanced stage, then organize multiple choice, completion, descriptive, and essay problems to be suitable for each stage of the strategy, and finally, to evaluate what effects this instructional strategy has on the students' academic achievements and enhancement of their scientific essay writing skills. The results of the study are as follows. First, lessons applying the strategy for developing constructivist-thinking were more effective in enhancing student' academic achievement than the text book-oriented lecture type lessons. In changes in academic achievement, the test group, for both high and low levels, displayed a higher average than the control group, however, changes in the high level was not statistically significant and changes in the low level students were found to be statistically significant. Second, scientific essay writing skills were found to be effective in all levels of the test group and the averages in both high and low groups of the test group were higher than those of the control group and were also found to be statistically significant.

  • Performance assessment has been introduced to school education as an alternative measure of the former educational assessment which put much emphasis on the result rather than the process of learning, memorization than pursuit of knowledge, and passive than active study. As for the subject of mathematics, the change of the assessment came to replace multiple choice tests with descriptive- and statement-type tests. This means animprovement on the testing system, focusing on the process of finding out the answer. The main focus, however, is still on the intellectual domain without paying due attention to the emotional domain of mathematics education. The previous studies on the assessment of emotional domain In mathematics have shown that there are stumbling blocks in the application of the assessment, such as the disputes on the reliability, objectivity, and fairness as well as the complicated procedure of applying the results to school records. The lack of the development and supply of the appropriate assessment tools have also been pointed out. Therefore, this study has been carried out with the intention of establishing an applicable standard of assessment on the emotional domain of high school matematics. As a result, detailed standards of performance assessment, which adopt oral examination, discussion, observation, and report have been developed. The problems which are likely to emerge In the course of the application of the newly developed assessment are under study as a continuing research project.

  • The purpose of this study was to search for the ideal role and performance assessment(PA) in the current school system of Korea, and then to propose some suggestions to improve PA, based on the previous research. The result of the study is presented below. The direction of PA application in school was made to follow the theoretical meaning of PA, to solve the problems related ti its adoption in school, and to help teachers educate students more effectively. The main goal of PA application in term of 'school education' is to help students learn more effectively. That is, the assessment is not only for the evaluation, but also for improving students' learning. PA can be used to assess students' strength and weakness in terms of their academic achievement of various fields of the subject. Also, PA can be used to assess students' academic achievement as an alternative method to the multiple-choice test. Finaly, the results of this study propose some suggestions about how to conduct PA in school to the stakeholders such as educational authorities, schools, teachers, students and parents.

  • Teachers' mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) strongly influence student achievement (Hill, Rowan, & Ball, 2005). However, there is generally no record that shows the levels of teachers' MKT in schools and districts. Because of the limited resources, schools and districts need some criteria to decide how to distribute their resources to help teachers improve MKT. This study explores what factors in teachers' backgrounds are related to their levels of MKT. This article examines the relationships between the MKT of 336 elementary teachers and their demographic, educational, and teaching backgrounds. To measure MKT, I used a series of multiple-choice problems. The number of years teaching mathematics is not critical to these measures. Implications are discussed with regard to policy for mathematics teacher education.

The Effect of Voice Therapy in Vocal Polyp Patients (성대용종 환자의 음성치료 효과)

  • Vocal polyps are benign phonotraumatic lesions which are traditionally treated using phonomicrosurgical techniques. In the case of hyperfunctional voice use, voice therapy is effective and results in voice improvement. However, the utility of voice therapy about vocal polyp is in great demand. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of voice therapy in patients with vocal polyps. The authors reviewed the medical records of 193 patients with vocal nodules or vocal polyps, and 64 patients (31 nodules and 33 polyps) were enrolled. All of the subjects had received explanation of problems, vocal hygiene education, and been treated by the $SKMVTT^{(R)}$ (Seong-Tae Kim's multiple voice therapy technique) ranging from 4 to 16 sessions (mean: 8.6 sessions). All subjects were examined by perceptual assessment, acoustic and aerodynamic measures, and VRP (voice range profile). In perceptual assessment, patients with vocal nodules had more breathy and strained voices than the vocal polyp group. Both groups significantly reduced rough, breathy voice after voice therapy. Patients with vocal polyps had worse voice quality than patients with nodules in acoustic measures. Both groups showed reduced jitter and shimmer after voice therapy. In aerodynamic measures, MPT and Psub were increased, and MFR was reduced (p<.05). Participants' frequency range and intensity range were increased after voice therapy, but only frequency range resulted in a significant difference (p<.05). In conclusion, the therapeutic effect of voice therapy in patients with vocal nodules and polyps was demonstrated perceptually and acoustically. We can suggest that voice therapy, including advice, vocal hygiene, and $SKMVTT^{(R)}$ is a useful as an initial choice of treatment for patients with vocal polyps before considering a surgical approach.

  • Selection of the best operation rule among a set of alternatives for a multipurpose reservoir system operation requires to evaluate many minor criteria I n addition to the major objectives assessed to the system, These problems are sufficiently complex and difficult that they are beyond heuristic decision rules and experiences in case several noncommensurable multiple criteria are included in the evaluation. With the assistance of multicriterion decision analysis techniques, it is possible to select the best one among various alternatives by systematically comparing and ranking the alternatives with respect to the criteria of choice. Evaluation criteria for multipurpose reservoir system operating rules were identified and defined, and the multicriterion decision analysis techniques were applied to evaluate the fore developed operating rules of the existing Chungju multipurpose project according to the identified nine multiple criteria. The application result shows that the methodology is very efficient to select the best operation alternative among a finite number of operating rules with many evaluation criteria for a large scale reservoir system operation.
