  • Recently, although there are strong requirements to manage multimedia data, there are a few researches on efficient storage and retrieval of multimedia data. In this paper, we design an object storage engine which can store and retrieve various multimedia objects efficiently. For this, we design an object manager for storing a variety of multimedia data and an inverted file manager for indexing unformatted text objects. In addition, we implement the objects storage engine which can support concurrency control and recovery schemes of DBMS by integrating the object manager and the inverted file manager with the SHORE low-level storage system. Finally, we develope a TIROS(Thesis Information Retrieval using Object Storage engine) system in order to verify the usefulness of our object storage engine.

  • From the 90's, the image information retrieval methods have been on progress. As good examples of the methods, Conventional histogram method and merged-color histogram method were introduced. Dey could get good result in image retrieval. However, Conventional histogram method has disadvantages if the histogram is shifted as a result of intensity change. Merged-color histogram, also, causes more process so, it needs more time to retrieve images. In this paper, we propose an improved new method using Adaptive Color Histogram(ACH) in image retrieval. The proposed method has been tested and verified through a number of simulations using hundreds of images in a database. The simulation results have quickly yielded the highly accurate candidate images in comparison to other retrieval methods. We show that ACH's can give superior results to color histograms for image retrieval.

  • With the rapid development of internet technology, the number of internet users and the amount of multimedia information on the internet is ever increasing. Recently, the web sites, such as e-business sites and shopping mall sites, deal with lots of image information. As a result, it is required to support content- based image retrieval efficiently on such image data. This paper proposes an intelligent image retrieval system, which adopts XML, technology. To support object-based col)tent retrieval on product catalog images containing multiple objects, we describe a multi -level metadata structure which represents the local features, global features, and semantics of image data. To enable semantic-based and content-based retrieval on such image data, we design a XML-Schema for the proposed metadata and show how to represent such metadata using XML- documents. We also describe how to automatically transform the retrieval results into the forms suitable for the various user environments, such as web browser or mobile browser, using XSLT The proposed scheme can be easily implemented on any commercial platforms supporting XML technology. It can be utilized to enable efficient image metadata sharing between systems, and it will contribute in improving the retrieval correctness and the user's satisfaction on content-based e-catalog image retrieval.

  • Many multimedia presentation applications involve retrieval of objects from more than one collaborating server. Presentations of objects from different collaborating servers might be interdependent. This implies that objects should be retrieved from remote servers and delivered continuously according to given time constraints. Such applications need an estimate of the avaliable network resources to each of the collaborating servers and local system resources in order to identify a schedule for retrieving the objects composing the presentation. A collaborating server can suggest modifications of the retrieval schedule depending on its load. these modifications can potentially affect the retrieval schedule for other collaborating applications. Hence, a sequence of negotiations has to be carried out with the collaborating servers in order to commit for a retrieval schedule of the objects composing the presentation. In this paper, we propose an application sub-layer protocol, RLCP(Resource Lock Commit Protocol), for handling the negotiation and commitment of the resources required for a collaborative multimedia presentation and apply it to distributed video presentation application.

  • In current Web 2.0 environment, one of the most core technology is social bookmarking which users put tags and bookmarks to their interesting Web pages. The main purpose of social bookmarking is an effective information service by use of retrieval, grouping and share based on user's bookmark information and tagging result of their interesting Web pages. But, current social bookmarking system uses the number of bookmarks and tag information separately in information retrieval, where the number of bookmarks stand for user's degree of interest on Web contents, information retrieval, and classification serve the purpose of tag information. Because of above reason, social bookmarking system does not utilize effectively the bookmark information and tagging result. This paper proposes a Web contents ranking algorithm combining bookmarks and tag information, based on preceding research on associative tag extraction by tag clustering. Moreover, we conduct a performance evaluation comparing with existing retrieval methodology for efficiency analysis of our proposed algorithm. As the result, social bookmarking system utilizing bookmark with tag, key point of our research, deduces a effective retrieval results compare with existing systems.

  • As the multimedia information retrieval system is advanced, the study of multimedia information retrieval is changing the method of low-level content based image retrieval to the semantical concept based retrieval. in this paper, we apply the theory of ontology to overcome the conceptual heterogeneity in the annotation based image retrieval. And we solve the some problems that happen when the ontology apply. As a result of our study, we try to apply the domain ontology to settle the conceptual heterogenity. In the experimental result, we knew that the semantic distance among the words is pretty dose when we apply the domain ontology than the wordnet. And in this paper, we show the possibility of the semantic image retrieval as we apply the domain ontology in the annotation based image retrieval.

  • Digital library is the most important database system that needs information retrieval engine for natural language documents and multimedia data. This paper describes the experimental results of information retrieval engine and browser based on natural language processing. It includes lexical analysis, syntax processing, stemming, and keyword indexing for the natural language text. With the experimental database ‘Earth and Space Science’ that has lots of images and titles and their descriptive text in natural language, text-based search engine was tested. Combined with content-based image search engine, it is expected to be a multimedia information retrieval system in digital library

  • This paper proposes an algorithm and its data structure to support real-time full-text search for the streamed or broadcasted multimedia data containing real-time stenograph text. Since the traditional indexing method used at information retrieval area uses the linguistic information, there is a heavy cost. Therefore, we propose the algorithm and its data structure based on suffix array, which is a simple data structure and has low space complexity. Suffix array is useful frequently to search for huge text. However, subtitle text of multimedia data is to get longer by time. Therefore, suffix array must be reconstructed because subtitle text is continually changed. We propose the data structure called prefix array and search algorithm using it.

  • In this paper, we present a content-based image retrieval method that is less sensitive to some rotations and translations of an image by using the fuzzy region segmentation. The algorithm retrieves similar images from a database using the two features of color and color spatial information. To index images, we use the average coordinates of color distribution to obtain the spatial information of each segmented region. Furthermore, we also propose the alternative to the ripple phenomenon, which is occurred in the conventional fuzzy region segmentation algorithm.

  • The k-nearest neighbor search query based on similarity is very important for content-based multimedia information retrieval(MIR). The conventional exact k-nearest neighbor search algorithm is not efficient for the MIR application because multimedia data should be represented as high dimensional feature vectors. Thus, an approximate k-nearest neighbor search algorithm is required for the MIR applications because the performance increase may outweigh the drawback of receiving approximate results. For this, we propose a new approximate k-nearest neighbor search algorithm for high dimensional data. In addition, the comparison of the conventional algorithm with our approximate k-nearest neighbor search algorithm is performed in terms of retrieval performance. Results show that our algorithm is more efficient than the conventional ones.
