In order to solve the problem of calculating the reasonable completed bridge state of a self-anchored hybrid cable-stayed suspension bridge (SA-HCSB), this paper proposes an analytical method. This method simplifies the main beam into a continuous beam with multi-point rigid supports and solves the support reaction forces. According to the segmented catenary theory, it simultaneously solves the horizontal forces of the main span main cables and the stay cables and iteratively calculates the equilibrium force system on the main beam in the collaborative system bridge state while completing the shape finding of the main span main cable and stay cables. Then, the horizontal forces of the side span main cables and stay cables are obtained based on the balance of horizontal forces on the bridge towers, and the shape finding of the side spans are completed according to the segmented catenary theory. Next, the difference between the support reaction forces of the continuous beam with multiple rigid supports obtained from the initial and final iterations is used to calculate the load of ballast on the side span main beam. Finally, the axial forces and strains of each segment of the main beam and bridge tower are obtained based on the loads applied by the main cable and stay cables on the main beam and bridge tower, thereby obtaining analytical data for the bridge in the reasonable completed state. In this paper, the rationality and effectiveness of this analytical method are verified through a case study of a SA-HCSB with a main span of 720m in finite element analysis. At the same time, it is also verified that the equilibrium force of the main beam under the reasonably completed bridge state can be obtained through iterative calculation. The analytical algorithm in this paper has clear physical significance, strong applicability, and high accuracy of calculation results, enriching the shape-finding method of this bridge type.

In this paper, the numerical methods of finding the optimal position of optical phase conjugator(OPC) and the optimal fiber dispersions are proposed, which are able to effectively compensate overall channels in $8{\times}40$ Gbps WDM system with non zero-dispersion shifted fiber(NZ-DSF) as an optical fiber. And the compensation characteristics in the system with two induced optimal parameters are compared with those in the system with mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) technique in order to confirm the availability of the proposed methods. It is confirmed that the optimal parameter values induced in this approach are very useful to effectively compensate overall channels in WDM system with OPC. And, it is confirmed that two optimal parameters depend on each other, but less related with the searching procedure. The methods proposed in this research will be expected to alternate with the method of making a symmetrical distribution of power and local dispersion in real optical link which is a serious problem of applying the OPC into multi-channels WDM system.
Bridges are lifeline and integral components of transportation system that are susceptible to seismic actions, their vulnerability assessment is essential for seismic risk assessment and mitigation. The vulnerability assessment of bridges common in Pakistan is very important as it is seismically very active region and the available code for the seismic design of bridges is obsolete. This research presents seismic vulnerability assessment of three real case simply supported multi-span reinforced concrete bridges commonly found in northern Pakistan, having one, two and three bents with circular piers. The vulnerability assessment is carried through the non-linear dynamic time history analyses for the derivation of fragility curves. Finite element based numerical models of the bridges were developed in MIDAS CIVIL (2015) and analyzed through with non-linear dynamic and incremental dynamic analyses, using a suite of bridge-specific natural spectrum compatible ground motion records. Seismic responses of shear key, bearing pad, expansion joint and pier components of each bridges were recorded during analysis and retrieved for performance based analysis. Fragility curves were developed for the bearing pads, shear key, expansion joint and pier of the bridges that first reach ultimate limit state. Dynamic analysis and the derived fragility curves show that ultimate limit state of bearing pads, shear keys and expansion joints of the bridges exceed first, followed by the piers ultimate limit state for all the three bridges. Mean collapse capacities computed for all the components indicated that bearing pads, expansion joints, and shear keys exceed the ultimate limit state at lowest seismic intensities.

In this paper the dynamic analysis of the multi-span beam on elastic foundation, which include discrete transnational and rotational springs, was performed. Furthermore, the effects of the intermediate supports were investigated. As a solution method, first the orthogonal polynomial functions which satisfy both the geometric and dynamic boundary conditions are obtained by imposing the orthogonality conditions. Then, the Galerkin's method is used to obtain the natural frequencies of the system. From numerical tests for various constraint and boundary conditions, it was found that the higher order orthogonal polynomial functions obtained by the present method can be used to get the accurate solution.

In this paper, a cochlea-inspired artificial filter bank(CAFB) was developed in order to efficiently acquire dynamic response of structure, and it was also evaluated via dynamic response experiments. To sort out signals containing significant modal information from all the dynamic responses of structure, it was made to adopt a band-pass filter optimizing algorithm(BOA) and a peak-picking algorithm (PPA). Optimally designed on the basis of El-centro and Kobe earthquake signals, it was then embedded into the wireless multi-measurement system(WiMMS). In order to evaluate the performance of the developed CAFB, a vibration test was conducted using the El-centro and Kobe earthquake signals, and structural responses of a two-span bridge were obtained and analyzed simultaneously by both a wired measurement system and a CAFB-based WiMMS. The test results showed that the compressed dynamic responses acquired by the CAFB-based WiMMS matched with those of the wired system, and they included significant modal information of the two-span bridge. Therefore this study showed that the developed CAFB could be used as a new, economic, and efficient measurement device for wireless sensor networks(WSNs) based real time structural health monitoring because it could reconstruct the whole dynamic response using the compressed dynamic response with significant modal information.

Recently the slab span-jointing method has been employed as one of the retrofit technologies to enhance the capacity of existing simple beam bridges in many cases. In general this method makes simple beam bridges behave like multi-span continuous bridges under service loads excluding self weight in company with external prestress force method in the field. In this paper the continuation effect has been studied for the retrofitted bridges by the experimental and numerical approaches. The results show that the deflections and stresses of members are reduced due to the increase of the total stiffness of bridge system and the efficiency of bridge continuation based on the slab span-jointing method is about 40 % when comparing with the case of continuous bridges.

Unpreparedness of the maintenance regulations is regarded as the main reason for the short life span of the multi-owned commercial residential buildings. This study suggests that the followings should be prepared for the effective maintenance and life prolongation of the multi-owned commercial residential buildings : 1) Standard maintenance regulations for those buildings should be set up, 2) Building maintenance works should be performed by the specialists, like licensed building manager, mechanical and electrical engineers, etc., 3) Long-range repair expenses should be laid by on the monthly base according to the long-range repair plan, 4) Regulations concerning the defect repair should be provided properly.
Natural ventilation in a four and one-half span, double polyethylene commercial greenhouse was investigated with actual data collected at Quailcrest Farm near Wooster, Ohio. Moreover, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical technique, FLUENT V4.3, was used to predict natural ventilation rates, thermal conditions, and airflow distributions in the greenhouse. The collected climate data showed that the multi-span greenhouse was well ventilated by the natural ventilation system during the typical summer weather conditions. The maximum recorded air temperature difference between inside and outside the greenhouse was 3.5$^{\circ}C$ during the hottest (34.7$^{\circ}C$) recorded sunny day; the air temperatures in the greenhouse were very uniform with the maximum temperature difference between six widely dispersed locations being only 1.7$^{\circ}C$. The CFD models predicted that air exchange rates were as high as 0.9 volume per minute (A.C. .min$^{-1}$ ) with 2.5m.s$^{-1}$ winds from the west as designed.
Track-bridge interaction has become an essential part in the design of bridges and rails in terms of modern railways. As a unique ballastless slab track, the longitudinal continuous slab track (LCST) or referred to as the China railway track system Type-II (CRTS II) slab track, demonstrates a complex force mechanism. Therefore, a comprehensive track-bridge interaction study between multi-span simply supported beam bridges and the LCST is presented in this work. In specific, we have developed an integrated finite element model to investigate the overall interaction effects of the LCST-bridge system subjected to the actions of temperature changes, traffic loads, and braking forces. In that place, the deformation patterns of the track and bridge, and the distributions of longitudinal forces and the interfacial shear stress are studied. Our results show that the additional rail stress has been reduced under various loads and the rail's deformation has become much smoother after the transition of the two continuous structural layers of the LCST. However, the influence of the temperature difference of bridges is significant and cannot be ignored as this action can bend the bridge like the traffic load. The uniform temperature change causes the tensile stress of the concrete track structure and further induce cracks in them. Additionally, the influences of the friction coefficient of the sliding layer and the interfacial bond characteristics on the LCST's performance are discussed. The systematic study presented in this work may have some potential impacts on the understanding of the overall mechanical behavior of the LCST-bridge system.
The Stonecutters Bridge (SCB) in Hong Kong is the third-longest cable-stayed bridge in the world with a main span stretching 1,018 m between two 298 m high single-leg tapering composite towers. A Wind and Structural Health Monitoring System (WASHMS) is being implemented on SCB by the Highways Department of The Hong Kong SAR Government, and the SCB-WASHMS is composed of more than 1,300 sensors in 15 types. In order to establish a linkage between structural health monitoring and maintenance management, a Structural Health Rating System (SHRS) with relevant rating tools and indices is devised. On the basis of a 3D space frame finite element model (FEM) of SCB and model updating, this paper presents the development of an SHR-oriented 3D multi-scale FEM for the purpose of load-resistance analysis and damage evaluation in structural element level, including modeling, refinement and validation of the multi-scale FEM. The refined 3D structural segments at deck and towers are established in critical segment positions corresponding to maximum cable forces. The components in the critical segment region are modeled as a full 3D FEM and fitted into the 3D space frame FEM. The boundary conditions between beam and shell elements are performed conforming to equivalent stiffness, effective mass and compatibility of deformation. The 3D multi-scale FEM is verified by the in-situ measured dynamic characteristics and static response. A good agreement between the FEM and measurement results indicates that the 3D multi-scale FEM is precise and efficient for WASHMS and SHRS of SCB. In addition, stress distribution and concentration of the critical segments in the 3D multi-scale FEM under temperature loads, static wind loads and equivalent seismic loads are investigated. Stress concentration elements under equivalent seismic loads exist in the anchor zone in steel/concrete beam and the anchor plate edge in steel anchor box of the towers.
