Convection-dominated melting in a rectangular cavity is analyzed numerically with particular attention to the multi-cellular flows in the melt. At the earlier stage of the melting, the melt region is quite similar to a cavity with high aspect rati71, where the multi-cellular natural convection appears. Numerical results show that the formation and evolution of the multiple flow cells in the melt region is approximately similar to t]tat of a single-phase flow in a tall cavity with the same aspect ratio; however, the continuous change of the melt region due to the melting affects the detailed process. Also, numerical aspects for the prediction of the detailed flow structure in the melt are discussed.

The present paper deals with the extension of AUSMPW+ scheme into two-fluid model for multiphase flow. AUSMPW+ scheme is the improvement of a single-phase AUSM+ scheme by designing pressure-based weighting functions to prevent oscillations near a wall and shock instability after a strong shock. Recently, Kitamura and Liou assessed a family of AUSM-type schemes with two-fluid model governing equations [K. Kitamura and M.-S. Liou, Comparative study of AUSM-Family schemes in compressible multi-phase flow simulations, ICCFD7-3702 (2012)]. It was observed that the direct application of the single-phase AUSMPW+ did not provide satisfactory results for most of numerical test cases, which motivates the current study. It turns out that, by designing pressure-based weighting functions, which play a key role in controlling numerical diffusion for two-fluid model, problems reported in can be overcome. Various numerical experiments validate the proposed modification of AUSMPW+ scheme is accurate and robust to solve multiphase flow within the framework of two-fluid model.
Several types of different header designs are numerically studied to have uniform distribution of two phase flow in the evaporator header having multi-channels. The different geometries include the inlet tube position into the header and the width of header. In the numerical calculation, two types of two-phase model such as homogeneous model and VOF(Volume Of Fluid) model are employed. In this study, the mal-distribution number, $M_d$, is newly defined to evaluate the averaged level of the flow distribution in the whole passes of the evaporator. As results, two phase flow in the header can be visualized using post-processing of numerical results. Furthermore, the optimum position of the inlet tube into the header and the width of header can be proposed for the better distribution of refrigerant(R-134a) flow.
In the polymer shaping process that uses molds, the quality of the molded products is determined not only by the flow of the (molten) polymer but also by the air venting in the cavity. Inadequate air venting in the cavity can cause defects in the product, such as voids, short shot, or black streaks. As it is critical to consider the location and size of the vents for proper venting of the air in the cavity, a method that predicts the flow of air and material is required. The venting of air by the flow of rubber inside the cavity was simulated by using a multi-phase computational fluid dynamics method. Through computer simulation, the interface of rubber and air over time was predicted. Then, the velocity and pressure distribution of the venting air were observed. Our research proposes a fundamental method for analyzing the multi-phase flow of polymer materials and air inside the cavity of a mold.
An improved multi-channel Impedance Void Meter (IVM) is developed to measure an area-averaged void fraction. It consists of a main sensor, a reference sensor and a signal processor. The sensor was designed to be flush-mounted to the inner wall of the test section to avoid the flow disturbances. Guard electrodes are used to obtain evenly distributed electrical field in a measuring volume. A reference sensor is also installed to eliminate the drift in void signal caused by the changes in electrical properties of working fluid. The signal processor with three channels is specially designed so as to minimize the inherent error due to the phase difference between channels. As an example of applications, the mean and fluctuating components of void fraction are measured for bubbly and slug flow regime, and it is shown that IVM has good dynamic resolution which is required to investigate the structural developments of bubbly flow and the propagation of void waves in a flow channel.
In this paper, the numerical simulation of the gas-liquid flow in a cylinder cyclone separator is performed to investigate the flow characteristics using a commercial software, FLUENT, which solves the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RaNS) equations. First, a single-phase flow with water in a gas-liquid cylinder cyclone(GLCC) separator is simulated and compared with the experiments(Farchi, 1990) and numerical simulations(Erdal, 1997). Then, the characteristics of the multi-phase flow for water-air, mud-only, and mud-air cases are discussed in the view point of the feasibilities for a mud handling system.
Algorithm for passenger flow analysis based on DEM(Discrete Element Method) is newly developed. In the new algorithm, there are many similarity between multi phase flow and passenger flow. The velocity component of 1st phase corresponds to the direction vector of cell, each particle to each passenger, volume fraction to population density and the momentum equation of particle to the walking velocity equation of passenger, etc. And, the walking velocity of passenger is also represented by the function of population density. Key algorithms are developed to determine the position of passenger, population density and numbering to each passenger, To verify the effectiveness of new algorithm, passenger flow analysis for simple railway station model is conducted. The results for passenger flow in the model station are satisfying qualitatively and quantitatively.
Preliminary analysis on the modeling conditions and the simulation results is conducted only to evaluate the correctness of the simulation configuration further to apply for the LASGIT project. Except for the unrealistic modeling conditions for the relations of capillary pressure and relative permeability against water saturation used previously, the simulation results successfully demonstrate Helium propagation typical for two-phase flow. Further elaborated simulation with more realistic parameters should complete the weak points of the preliminary work.
