1.5V 256kb eFlash 메모리 IP용 저면적 DC-DC Converter 설계 (Design of Low-Area DC-DC Converter for 1.5V 256kb eFlash Memory IPs)

  • 본 논문에서는 배터리 응용을 위해 저면적 DC-DC 변환기를 갖는 1.5V 256kb eFlash 메모리 IP를 설계하였다. 저면적 DC-DC 변환기 설계를 위해서 본 논문에서는 단위 전하펌프 회로에서 펌핑 노드의 전압을 VIN 전압으로 프리차징해주는 회로인 크로스-커플드 (cross-coupled) 5V NMOS 트랜지스터 대신 5V NMOS 프리차징 트랜지스터를 사용하였고, 펌핑 노드의 부스팅된 전압을 VOUT 노드로 전달해주는 트랜지스터로 5V 크로스-커플드 PMOS 트랜지스터를 사용하였다. 한편 5V NMOS 프리차징 트랜지스터의 게이트 노드는 부스트-클록 발생기 회로를 이용하여 VIN 전압과 VIN+VDD 전압으로 스윙하도록 하였다. 그리고 펌핑 커패시터의 한쪽 노드인 클록 신호를 작은 링 발진 (ring oscillation) 주기 동안 full VDD로 스윙하기 위해 각 단위 전하펌프 회로마다 로컬 인버터 (local inverter)를 추가하였다. 그리고 지우기 모드 (erase mode)와 프로그램 모드 (program mode)에서 빠져나와 대기 (stand-by) 상태가 될 때 부스팅된 전압을 VDD 전압으로 프리차징해주는 회로를 사용하는 대신 HV (High-Voltage) NMOS 트랜지스터를 사용하여 VDD 전압으로 프리차징 하였다. 이와같이 제안된 회로를 DC-DC 변환기 회로에 적용하므로 256kb eFLASH IP의 레이아웃 면적은 기존 DC-DC 변환기 회로를 사용한 경우보다 6.5% 정도 줄였다.

  • 최근 휴대용 전자기기의 발달로 인해 전력관리회로 기술의 중요성이 증가하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 휴대기기를 위한 고성능 DC-DC 벅 변환기를 설계하였으며 특히 출력에서의 리플 전압을 작게 하고 수 A급의 대용량 출력전류의 안정적인 구동이 가능하도록 2-페이스 구조를 사용하여 설계하였다. 설계된 전압모드 2-페이스 벅 변환기는 $0.35{\mu}m$ CMOS 공정을 통하여 칩으로 제작되었고 전체 칩의 크기는 $2.35{\times}2.35mm^2$, 동작주파수는 4MHz, 최대 4A의 부하전류를 구동할 수 있으며 최대 변환효율은 91% 이다.

마일드 하이브리드 전기 차량용 2.5kW급 8상 양방향 컨버터에 관한 연구 (Research on a 2.5kW 8-Phase Bi-directional Converter for Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicles)

  • This paper is a study on the bi-directional DC-DC converter, one of the key elements of 48V-12V dual systems in mild hybrid electric vehicles. Mild hybrid electric vehicles require a bi-directional DC-DC converter that can efficiently transmit power in two directions between a 48V battery and a 12V battery. To develop a bi-directional DC-DC converter with better price competitiveness, upgraded fuel economy, excellent performance and smaller size, this study designed, produced and presented a circuit that improved on the existing one. In the proposed 8-phase bi-directional DC-DC converter, the size of the passive element was reduced through the 8-phase interleaved topology, whereas downscaling had previously posed a difficulty. This study also designed and produced a 2.5kW class prototype. Based on the proposed 8-phase interleaved topology, a size of 227.5 (W) * 172 (L) * 64.35 (H) was achieved. In the boost mode operation and buck operation modes, the maximum efficiency was recorded at 94.04 % and 95.78 %, respectively.

Synthesis and Implementation of a Multi-Port DC/DC Converter for Hybrid Electric Vehicles

  • A non-isolated Multiple Input Converter (MIC) with an input port, two storage ports and a load port is proposed. The synthesis of the proposed four port converter with its switch realization is presented. A steady state analysis of each operating mode with a small-signal model is derived, and a stability analysis is done. A mode selection controller is proposed to automatically choose a specific operating mode based on the voltage levels of the different source and storage units. In addition, a voltage control loop is used to regulate the output voltage. A 200W prototype is built with a TMS320F28027 DSP controller to test the feasibility of the operating modes. Simulation and experimental results show the ability of the proposed converter to handle multiple inputs either individually or simultaneously.

Hierarchical Control Scheme for Three-Port Multidirectional DC-DC Converters in Bipolar DC Microgrids

  • In this paper, a hierarchical control strategy is introduced to control a new three-port multidirectional DC-DC converter for integrating an energy storage system (ESS) to a bipolar DC microgrid (BPDCMG). The proposed converter provides a voltage-balancing function for the BPDCMG and adjusts the states of charge (SoC) of the ESS. Previous studies tend to balance the voltage of the BPDCMG buses with active sources or by transferring power from one bus to another. Furthermore, the batteries available in BPDCMGs were charged equally by both buses. However, this power sharing method does not guarantee efficient operation of the whole system. In order to achieve a higher efficiency and lower energy losses, a triple-layer hierarchical control strategy, including a primary droop controller, a secondary voltage restoration controller and a tertiary optimization controller are proposed. Thanks to the multi-functional operation of the proposed converter, its conversion stages are reduced. Furthermore, the efficiency and weight of the system are both improved. Therefore, this converter has a significant capability to be used in portable BPDCMGs such as electric DC ships. The converter modes are analyzed and small-signal models of the converter are extracted. Comprehensive simulation studies are carried out and a BPDCMG laboratory setup is implemented in order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed converter and its hierarchical control strategy. Simulation and experimental results show that using the proposed converter mitigates voltage imbalances. As a result, the system efficiency is improved by using the hierarchical optimal power flow control.

A Design and Control of Bi-directional Non-isolated DC-DC Converter with Coupled Inductors for Rapid Electric Vehicle Charging System

  • This paper presents a simple and cost-effective stand-alone rapid battery charging system of 30kW for electric vehicles. The proposed system mainly consists of active front-end rectifier of neutral point clamped 3-level type and non-isolated bi-directional dc-dc converter of multi-phase interleaved half-bridge topology with coupled inductors. The charging system is designed to operate for both lithium-polymer and lithium-ion batteries. The complete charging sequence is made up of three sub-interval operating modes; pre-charging mode, constant-current mode, and constant-voltage mode. The pre-charging mode employs the staircase shaped current profile to accomplish shorter charging time while maintaining the reliable operation of the battery. The proposed system is able to reach the full-charge state within less than 16min for the battery capacity of 8kWh by supplying the charging current of 67A. The optimal discharging algorithm for Vehicle to the Grid (V2G) operation has been adopted to maintain the discharging current of 1C. Owing to the simple and compact power conversion scheme, the proposed solution has superior module-friendly mechanical structure which is absolutely required to realize flexible power expansion capability in a very high-current rapid charging system.

DCM Frequency Control Algorithm for Multi-Phase DC-DC Boost Converters for Input Current Ripple Reduction

  • In this paper, a discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) frequency control algorithm is proposed to reduce the input current ripple of a multi-phase interleaved boost converter. Unlike conventional variable duty and constant frequency control, the proposed algorithm controls the switching frequency to regulate the output voltage. By fixing the duty ratio at 1/N in the N-phase interleaved boost converter, the input current ripple can be minimized by ripple cancellation. Furthermore, the negative effects of the diode reverse recovery current are eliminated because of the DCM characteristic. A frequency controller is designed to employ the proposed algorithm considering the magnetic permeability change. The proposed algorithm is analyzed in the frequency domain and verified by a 600 W three-phase boost converter prototype that achieved 57% ripple current reduction.

빠른 응답을 갖는 멀티페이스 벅 변환기 (Multi-Phase Buck Converter with Fast Transient Response)

  • 최근 휴대용 기기의 수요가 증가함에 따라 배터리 사용시간을 최대화하기 위한 노력이 진행되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 빠른 과도 응답을 갖는 멀티페이스 벅 변환기를 제안한다. 멀티페이스 벅 변환기는 리플 상쇄 효과가 있기 때문에 작은 크기의 출력 캐패시터를 사용할 수 있고, 더 적은 인덕턴스를 갖는 인덕터의 사용이 가능하다. 휴대용 기기가 대기 모드에서 활성 모드로 빠르게 변할 수 있도록 4-페이스 구조로 설계하여 빠른 과도 응답을 갖게 하였다. 사용된 공정은 Hynix 0.18um CMOS 공정을 통해 제작되었고 공급전압 범위는 2.7~3.3V 이며, 최대 부하 전류는 500mA, settling time은 14us이다.

AT 플라이백 다중공진형 컨버터 동작모드 해석 (Operational Mode Analysis of the AT Flyback Multi-Resonant Converter)

  • The multi-resonant(MR) converter has a characteristics that the parasitic components existing in the converter are absorbed into the resonant circuits. The designed MR converter could be got a high efficiency and a high power density because the switching power losses are reduced effectively due to resonant switching circuit. However, the high resonant voltage stress of switching power devices leads to the conduction loss. In this paper, it is proposed the novel alternated(AT) flyback multi-resonant converter to overcome such a drawback. The suggested converter dc input is divided by two series input filter capacitors. The resonant stress voltage is reduced to 2-3 times the input voltage without any complexity and it provides the various circuit schemes in lots of applications. The proposed flyback MR converter is verified through simulation and experiment.
