Purpose: This study was designed to explore the relationship of situational meaning with maternal self-esteem in mothers with high risk newborn. Method: The subjects of this study were 82 mothers with high risk newborn. Data were collected using a translated Family Meaning Attribution Scale and Maternal Self-Report Inventory. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson Correlation Coefficients and Stepwise Multiple Regression. Result: The average score of the situational meaning in high risk newborn mothers was 64.0l(possible score is between 0-96) and the average score of each item was 1.98. The average score of the maternal self-esteem in high risk newborn mothers was 81.96(possible score is between 26-104) and the average score of each item was 3.15. No significant differences were found in situational meaning according to general characteristics except whether it was a planned pregnancy or not. No significant differences were found in maternal self-esteem according to general characteristics except disease or admission experience during pregnancy. There was significant positive correlation between situational meaning and maternal self-esteem. Conclusion: It is necessary for nurses to provide high risk newborn mothers with care for improving situational meaning that is attributed to the mothers. It can be helpful to improve maternal self-esteem and in the end it will facilitate the maternal transition in mothers with high risk newborn.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate mothers' perception of antibiotic use for their children. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted of a convenient sample of 210 mothers who visited the two pediatric hospitals in D city. Descriptive statistics, t-test, analysis of variance, Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Pearson correlation coefficients with SPSS WIN 24.0 were used to analyze the data. Results: The perception of mothers on antibiotic use for their children was relatively low (3.28/5) and showed a statistically significant difference based on the mothers' educational background (${\chi}^2=15.30$, p<.001). About 57-77% of participants discontinued or reduced the dosage of the antibiotics if their children's symptoms were relieved, and about 60% of them perceived that antibiotics treat viral infections. Mothers' adherence to specific doses of antibiotics in their children was positively correlated with their knowledge and beliefs (r=.17, p=.014) and their attitude regarding the use of antibiotics (r=.17, p=.014). Only 1.4% of the participants had educational experience regarding the correct use of antibiotics. Conclusion: Based on the results, it can be concluded that an educational program for mothers should be developed and to verify its effects in order to induce proper use of antibiotics among mothers.
Objectives : This study were to find out differences in mother's oral health knowledge and oral health care behaviors and to find out factors that affected mothers' oral health care behavior for their young children. Methods : The survey was carried out with questionnaire about personal factor, cognitive factor, psychological factor and behavioral factor to 227 mothers. They had children from 3 to 5 years. The collected data was analyzed by SPSS WIN 12.0. Results : There were statistically significant differences in oral health knowledges as mother's educational background, importance of oral health, experience of oral health education, and oral health locus of control. There were statistically significant differences in mother's oral health care behaviors as mother's job, interest of oral health, importance of oral health, experience of oral health education, and oral health locus of control. And mother' oral health care behavior for herself, interest of oral health, and oral health locus of control were found as important variables in mothers's oral health care behavior for their children. Conclusions : Mother's oral health care behavior for herself was the powerful factor that affected mother's oral health care behavior for her children.
This purpose of study is the effects of parents' family-of-origin experience on their parenting behaviors of 260 parents with child(ren) aged between 3-7. The results were as follows: First, father's with higher monthly average income showed more frequent responsive parenting behaviors. Mothers with different age, income, employment status, employment of their mother in the family of origin, and current family types showed different levels of limit-setting, intimacy, and responsivenss in their parenting. Second, both parents' experiences from their family of orgin were correlated their parenting behaviors. Third, regression analysis revealed that mothers were found to give their children more reasonable guidance if they experienced more independence from their parents and more acceptance from their mothers, if they raise more than two kids, and if their family of origin was an extended type. Fathers who perceived higher family of health, more acceptance by their mothers showed more limit setting parenting behavior.
Purpose: The purposes of this descriptive survey study were to describe the perception on the importance of parental role by mothers with infants, and to analyze the differences of those perception depending on the mothers' and infants' characteristics. Method: Data were collected from 240 mothers of infants visited at one public health center in Gangreung city. The instrument used for this study was a self-report questionnaire to identify the parental role. Results: The mean score for perception on the importance of parental role was 139.89, and item mean for caring performance ability domain 4.43, environmental organization for development domain 4.38, acceptance domain 4.26, responsibility domain 4.21점, knowledge for caring domain 4.19, sensitivity 4.16, provision of stimulus and involvement 4.01. There were significant differences in the perception of parental role according to spouse relationship, father's participation in child rearing, experience of parental role education, and infant's temperament. Conclusion: The experience of childhood is highly affected by the quality of the parental role. It is important to identify parents' perception of parental role. Therefore, the parental role education program are necessary.
This study was aimed to seek the essential meaning of the Strengths Model based experience of the mothers of the children with ADHD. To achieve such goal, a phenomenological study was carried out from April 2010 to April 2011 covering about 12 months in the way of 2~3 times of interviewing with 14 mothers of the children with ADHD. As a result, the essence of the experiences of those mothers was interpreted as 'the running of unwanted marathon struggling themselves to complete it'. The joining in the unwanted marathon turned out to have led 'me' the mother of the children with ADHD into miserable pain, but that is the 'energy' for 'my child' to endure the world. The essence of those mothers' experiences were divided into eight processes by timely constitution. They firstly experience 'a serial confusion' by their children's odd behaviour which turns out to be 'a semiconscious feeling by the diagnosis with 'ADHD' but then they make full efforts for their children accepting their 'maternal fate'. In that process, they participate in the unwanted marathon with the feeling of misery and gratitude for the 'sayings of teachers which play the roles of shot and grace'. The process was expressed as 'marathon like pain'. They make a resolve to live positively in the midst of lonely struggle unable to give up toward the finish line for 'my child and myself'. They encourage themselves for their children, but that's not easy process. Nevertheless, they gain enduring energy supported by their child, family and specialists. Those mothers keep running today also for their 'beloved doves enduring the ongoing hardship' from the raising of abnormal child toward the finish line of the marathon they have to run for even though the 'finish line' may turn into' 'starting point' again'. This researcher submits here the maternal experiences above as the task to practice social welfare for the mothers of the children with ADHD and the children themselves.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify and describe the caregiving difficulties that mothers of children with spina bifida experience from their own perspectives. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study was designed. Data were collected from five mini-focus group interviews and four individual interviews using open-ended questions. Nineteen mothers of children with mild spina bifida participated in the study during 2014-2015. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis to identify major difficulties perceived by the mothers. Results: Five domains were identified with 12 subdomains. "Daily routine continence management" describes difficulties arising in bladder and bowel management for the child with spina bifida. "Management of school life of child" deals with difficulties in relation to the school facilities, such as the toilets, as well as teachers and friends. "Relationship with family and neighbors" illustrates problems in relations with their spouse, normal children, relatives and neighbors. "Maintaining physical and psychological health" includes physical and psychological problems of the mothers. "Finance" describes economic burden that the mothers face in the management of child's illness. Conclusion: The findings from this study provide insight into the practical issues related to the management of chronic conditions of children with spina bifida from the mothers' perspectives.
Objectives: To describe the rate of injuries among infants and toddlers. and to investigate the attitude. knowledge. and practice on safety of their mothers. Methods: The total sample consisted of 308 mothers with infants or toddlers from two public health centers in two cities in Kyunggi Province. A questionnaire was used to collect data. which was analyzed with SPSS 11.5 Win program. Results: Thirty-eight percent of the subjects had experienced home accidents. Fall. burn. and laceration were the most frequently occurred home injuries. Most of the mothers were anxious for child accidents, and $59.4\%$ of mothers thought of safety as a primary concern. The mean score of knowledge on safety was 7.63. and the mean score of practice on safety was 34.76. Safety knowledge was significantly higher in mothers with higher education. higher income. and experience of having information on safety. but safety practice was not different depending on these factors. There was a negative correlation between safety practice and child rearing burden. Conclusions: The rate of injuries among infants and toddlers was still high compared to other developed countries. This study provided basic data about the accidents of infants and toddlers. and the level of safety knowledge and safety practice of their mothers. The related factors found in this study should be considered when providing anticipatory guidance or developing injury prevention programs for mothers.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with behaviors of mothers that expose their infants to endocrine disruptors. The PROCEED model was used as a theoretical basis for the study. Methods: This correlational study included 120 mothers with infants between the ages of 1 month to 36 months. Participants were recruited through the maternal community web-site of mothers of infants in W city. Results: There was a significant negative correlation among experience of mothers who had participated in environmentally friendly activities, the health status of the infants perceived by the mother, and behaviors of mothers that exposed infants to endocrine disruptors. The factors based on PROCEED model explained 15.3% of the behaviors by mothers that exposed infants to endocrine disruptors. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop and provide educational programs that include detailed information on relationship of endocrine disruptors to children's health.
This study was conducted to explore initial motherhood experience of non-married mothers who decided to raise their babies. We applied Rennie's hermeneutic grounded theory for this study in which 7 non-married mothers participated. 9 hermeneutic categories which are 'decision to give birth', 'feeling of hitting bottom', 'ambivalence toward a life in stomach', 'realization of motherhood', 'motherhood anxiety', 'the bridle of social tag', 'hope of motherhood', 'encounter with new self' and 'visage of weary life' were constructed based on 145 meaning units, 34 subordinate categories. The core category that integrates motherhood experiences of participants was postulated as living with two conflicting visages of motherhood which are a cure and a poison at the same time. Motherhood experience processes were emerged in five stages which are decision to give birth, psychological frustration, realization of motherhood, confusion, and hope and discouragement of motherhood. Three types of motherhood experience were analyzed in the study which are adaptative, conflictive, and resistant. Based on the result of the study, the motherhood experience of non-married mother who decided to raise their babies are the process of emergence of new identity called mother. The non-married mothers formed their motherhood identities as they internalize socioculturally granted motherhood ideology. Moreover, the gap between socially oriented motherhood and realistic role of motherhood led to confusion. Based on this study, we suggest intervention plans to the field of social welfare practice that will support initial motherhood of non-married mothers who decided to keep their babies.
