  • The purpose of this study was to describe maternal social networks and to examine their relationships to maternal perceptions of parenting task difficulty. One hundred and thirty-three mothers of preschool children responded to a questionnaire indicating individuals in their networks, support functions, and perceptions of task difficulty. Mothers reported an average of 6.5 persons in their networks, including primarily with her own mother, the husband, mother-in-law, and sisters. While support was provided mainly by her husband and her own family members, the kinds of support varied depending on the person in networks. It was also found that support functions were different in terms of maternal job status, sex of the child, and the child's previous experience in day care or early childhood education settings. Emotional support from networks was significantly related to parenting task difficulty, especially in daily routine care. Mothers who perceived more emotional support from networks reported parenting to be less difficult.

The data analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, cronbach's $\alpha$, and multiple regression. The major findings were as follows: First, adolescent's sociometric popularity was affected by age, overt aggression, academic self-esteem, social self-esteem, and impulsiveness of organism variables. Second, adolescent's sociometric popularity was affected by mother's affectional parenting, mother's control parenting, and attachment to friends of microsystem variables. Third, adolescent's sociometric popularity was affected by family - peer relationship and family - school relationship of mesosystem variables. Fourth, adolescent's sociometric popularity was affected by appraisal support of extended family, after-school activity, and circle activity of exosystem variables.

  • This study examines the effect of parenting stress on children's social competence in relation to parenting stress, children's social competence, and parents' self-esteem, The purpose of this study is to investigate whether parental self-esteem mediates the relationship between parenting stress and children's social competence. Frequency analysis and descriptive statistical analysis were performed on the data of the 7th year of 2014 Panel Study of Korean Children(PSKC), and Pearson's moment correlation coefficient was calculated for correlation analysis between variables. In addition, in order to verify the mediating effect of parental self-esteem in the relationship between parenting stress and the child's social competence, Process Macro Model 4 was applied to verify the mediating effect, The significance of the indirect effect was verified by the bootstrapping method. As a result of this study, first, the correlations between all latent variables showed significant correlations. Second, it was confirmed that mother and father self-esteem had a mediating effect in the effect of father and mother's stress on infants' social competence. These results suggest that in order to improve children's social competence, parents should be able to increase their self-esteem so that they can have faith and confidence in themselves and control their emotions well in parenting stressful situations.

  • Purpose: This study investigated the parenting experiences of mothers of young children born moderate-to-late preterm (MLPT) in South Korea. Methods: In this qualitative study, semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with 10 mothers of MLPT children from infancy to preschool age. The interviews were video-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Four categories resulted from the analysis of parenting experiences of mothers with young MLPT children, as follows: "becoming a mother of an early-born child", "difficulties as the primary caregiver for a high-risk child", "helpful social support, but still a lack of professional support for parenting a high-risk child", and "mothers and children growing together". Conclusion: Mothers of young MLPT children experienced difficulties due to concerns about their child's health, growth and development, and insufficient child-rearing support. Therefore, social support systems should be strengthened and more aggressive nursing strategies should be adopted for mothers of young MLPT children.

  • Purpose: This study was aimed at identifying the levels of parenting stress among mothers of children with cerebral palsy and factors influencing parenting stress. Method: The research design was cross-sectional survey. Data were collected from 122 mothers of hospitalized children (under 15 years of age) with cerebral palsy at the Y medical center using the questionnaires. The data were analyzed using one way analysis of variance with Scheffe test for post-hoc analysis or t-test, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The mean score of parenting stress was 2.52 (SD=0.79; range: 1~4). The father's participation, mother's parenting hours, self-esteem and social support were significant predictors of parenting stress, significantly accounting for the 33.3% variance (F=16.118, p<.001). Conclusion: It is essential for health professionals to consider the aforementioned four factors when developing interventions to reduce parenting stress for mothers of children with cerebral palsy.

  • In this study, the influence of mothers' parenting behaviors on children's strategies and competence of emotional regulation was examined. Further, the mediating effects of children's active-social support seeking and aggressive strategies on the above relationship were explored. The participants were W mother-child pairs. The children were 5th and 6th graders at two elementary schools in Kyunggi province and Kwangju metropolitan area The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, Pearson correlations, standard multiple regressions and structural equation modeling analysis by LISREL 8.3. The main results of this study were as follows: (1) The more the mothers coached children with affection and reasoning, the more adaptive emotional regulation the children had; whereas children tended to have maladaptive emotional regulation in response to the mothers' rejecting and forceful parenting behaviors. Also, when children were coached by mothers with love, reasoning and consistent restriction, they used more active-social support seeking strategies, whereas they used more aggressive strategies when the mothers coached children with rejecting and forceful parenting behaviors. The more the mothers were rejecting, forceful and intervening, the more the children used passive-avoidant strategies. (2) The more the children used active-social support seeking strategies and the less the children used aggressive strategies, the more likely they had adaptive emotional regulation. The more the children used aggressive strategies, the more likely they had maladaptive emotional regulation. (3) Children's active-social support seeking strategies played a partial mediating role between mothers' affectionate and reasoned coaching and children's adaptive emotional regulation. These strategies, on the other hand, played a full mediating role between mothers' consistent restriction and children's adaptive emotional regulation. Children's aggressive strategies played a partial mediating role between mothers' rejecting and forceful parenting behaviors and children's maladaptive emotional regulation. Mothers' non-intervention had an influence on neither the children's aggressive strategies nor their maladaptive emotional regulation.

  • The purpose of this study is to synthesize research findings on the relationship between parenting efficacy and the variables related to it, as well as to produce results using meta-analysis. The following questions guide this study : Which variables are frequently conducted in research related to parenting efficacy? What is the effect size of each variable? The 65 studies whose results are analyzed in this paper were collected via a search for investigations focusing on 'parenting efficacy'. The studies were used for meta-analysis in which eleven variables were selected. The results of the analysis indicate that a large effect size is produced by the parenting stress in a negative direction. A higher than medium effect size occurs on the basis of parenting beliefs in a negative direction. A higher than medium effect size is also caused by the father's involvement in child care and social support. A medium effect size is produced on the basis of children's temperament, and a small effect size is the result of the mother's academic background, parenting knowledge, and parent's income. There is no relationship between parenting efficacy and children's gender.

  • This study examined the effects of support systems and traditional value beliefs about the role of women on the parenting stress of dual-career mothers. The subjects were 203 employed mothers with one child 4- to 36-months of age. The influential independent variables affecting parenting stress listed in order of significance were satisfaction with child care, value placed on traditional maternal roles, sex of child, and cost of child care. Contrary to the researchers assumptions, social support systems had no effect on parenting stress. The results of this study have implications for formal and informal support systems for employed mothers with young children.
