  • Three specimens of Lutjanus ophuysenii (217.8-226.7 mm in standard length) were collected by a gill net at Korea between August 2015 and July 2016. This species has not previously been recorded from Korea. L. ophuysenii is very similar to Lutjanus vitta. But several morphological characteristics distinguish the two species, including the number of lateral line scales (46-49 scales in L. ophuysenii; 49-52 scales in L. vitta), a black spot in the middle part of the longitudinal stripe (present in L. ophuysenii; absent in L. vitta), and the absence of a scale on posterior end of the preopercle in L. ophuysenii (present in L. vitta). The Korean name proposed for L. ophuysenii is "Jeom-jul-tung-dom."

  • In an effort to isolate a bacterium producing chondroitin sulfate (CS), a marine bacterium, KS-1, which produces mucopolysaccharides, was isolated from seawater and identified as Marinobacter sp. based on analyses of its morphological and biochemical traits and 16S rDNA sequence. Agarose-gel electrophoresis showed that the KS-1 strain produces a CS-like mucopolysaccharide. Structural analysis using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that the structure of the CS-like mucopolysaccharide produced by Marinobacter sp. KS-1 is similar to that of dermatan sulfate (CS B). However, the molecular mass of the CS-like mucopolysaccharide is higher than that of standard chondroitin sulfates. Considering the above results, we conclude that the Marinobacter sp. KS-1 produces a CS-like mucopolysaccharide that differs somewhat from CS B in molecular mass.

  • A single specimen of Thyrsitoides marleyi (818 mm in standard length), belonging to the family Gempylidae, was collected for the first time in Korea from the coastal waters off Busan, Korea using longline with hooks on 27 January 2012. This species is characterized by the following morphological traits: palate with three fangs, dark dorsal spine membrane, ending part of soft dorsal and anal fin rays finlet-like, and tip of the jaw with a cartilaginous process. We suggest a new Korean name "Gal-chi-ggo-chi" for T. marleyi.

  • This paper proposes some technical approaches for automatic detection of pulmonary nodules in chest X-ray images. We applied threshold technique for the lung field segmentation and extended the lung field by using morphological methods. A template matching technique was employed for automatic detecting nodules in lung area. Genetic algorithm(GA) was used in template matching(TM) to select a matched image from various reference patterns(simulated typical nodules). We eliminated the false-positive candidates by using histograms and contrasts. We used standard databases published by Japanese Society of Radiological Technology (JSRT) for correct results. Also we employ two-dimensional Gaussian distribution for some reference images because the shadow of lung nodules in radiogram generally shows the distributions. Nodules of about 89% were correctly detected by our scheme. The simulation results show that it is an effective method to indicate lesions on chest radiograms.

  • A seed-borne fungus, Curvularia sp. EML-KWD01, was isolated from an indigenous wheat seed by standard blotter method. This fungus was characterized based on the morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analysis. Phylogenetic status of the fungus was determined using sequences of three loci: rDNA internal transcribed spacer, large ribosomal subunit, and glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase gene. Multi loci sequencing analysis revealed that this fungus was Curvularia spicifera within Curvularia group 2 of family Pleosporaceae.

  • Ah Myeong Dan (兒明丹) is Chinese patent medicine which is used for congenital fever and congenital boils in Korea. It consists of 11 kinds of powdered crude drugs. In powdered crude drugs, it is hard to identify each component by chemical analysis or morphological examination. However, the method of identification of powdered crude drugs has not been clearly established. Therefore, it is of interest to establish the microscopic method for identification of powdered crude drugs of Chinese patent medicines. The effectiveness of microscopic method is exemplified by the identification of tissue and contents of crude drugs by comparison with standard drugs. In this study, it is demonstrated that the microscopic method is very effective for the identification of 11 crude drug ingredients in Ah Myeong Dan.

  • A single specimen (244.2 mm in standard length) of Satyrichthys welchi was collected from Pohang in the southern East Sea of Korea in March 2021. This species is characterized by the following morphological combination: 4 lip barbels, 3 chin barbels, antrose spines on upper lateral low of posterior bony plate and equal parietal bones. S. welchi was morphologically similar to its congeneric species, S. laticeps, but is clearly distinguished in presence of dusky black spots on dorsal fin (present in S. welchi vs. absent in S. laticeps). We propose a new Korean name "Gi-JeomByeol-Seong-Dae" for the species S. welchi.

  • Three specimens (33.6-44.8 mm in standard length) of the family Bregmacerotidae, collected from the waters off south-western Jeju-do Island in October 2016, were identified as Bregmaceros nectabanus on the basis of morphological and molecular methods (DNA barcoding). This species is characterized by having 50-52 2nd dorsal fin rays, 52-53 anal fin rays, 13 principal caudal fin rays, an unpigmented abdomen, irregularly distributed dorsal chromatophores, and the origin of a dorsal fin slightly behind the anal fin. This is the first reliable record of B. nectabanus in Korea. According to Yoo et al. (1992), we propose a Korean name "Tae-Pyeong-Yang-Nal-Gae-Myeol" for this species. Also, we suggest key to species of these eight bregmacerotids from the northwestern Pacific.

  • The effect of nanoparticle volume fraction on the elastic properties of a polymer-based nanocomposite was experimentally investigated and the obtained results were compared with various existing theoretical models. The nanocomposite was consisted of high density polyethylene (HDPE) as polymeric matrix and 0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 wt.% multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) prepared using twin screw extruder and injection molding technique. Nanocomposite samples were molded in injection apparatus according to ASTM-D638 standard. Therefore, in addition to morphological investigations of the samples, tensile tests at ambient temperature were performed on each sample and stress-strain plots, elastic moduli, Poisson's ratios, and strain energies of volume units were extracted from primary strain test results. Tensile test results demonstrated that 1 wt.% nanoparticles presented the best reinforcement behavior in HDPE-MWCNT nanocomposites. Due to the agglomeration of nanoparticles at above 1 wt.%, Young's modulus, yielding stress, fracture stress, and fracture energy were decreased and Poisson's ratio and failure strain were increased.
