  • The past three decades have witnessed a renaissance in the field of extragalactic globular clusters (GCs). GC systems have now been investigated in galaxies ranging from dwarfs to giants and spanning all the morphological types. Detailed studies of GCs provide strong constraints on galaxy formation that can be obtained in the near-field. In this talk I will review some of the pivotal studies performed with the HST and large ground-based telescopes and state-of-the-art simulations. Also, I will attempt to introduce my new solution to a long-standing puzzle in this field----the origin of GC bimodality in color. I will show that the theory gives a simple, cohesive explanation for the key observations of extragalactic GCs. The implication of the results will be discussed in the context of formation of GC systems and their parent galaxies.

  • Little research has been done regarding the explicit and objective analysis and explanation of the spatial logic of traditional Korean settlement patterns, in spite of many archeological and socio-historical studies. In this paper we present research into spatial mechanisms and their social meanings in three traditional villages in the southern province of Korea. Conventional space-syntax analysis of spatial configuration has been used to analysis and investigate the morphological forms and functions of the traditional villages. The research results show that the traditional Korean villages are spatially deeper and syntactically less connected than other comparable urban forms, such as old European cities. Configurational analysis of the three villages reveals that their spatial structures are configured to have their own spatial logic, not a geometric order but a spatial structure. What is however noteworthy is the way they embrace their own environmental context and factors and implement them into the process of urban growth or spatial construction.

  • This study is purposed to find fundamental characteristics in Grassi's architecture which has architectural principles in architecture itself and in the general frame of the historical facts of architecture. His architectural theories can be explained for rationality, historicity, universality. The method of architectural composition can be divided into urban morphological characteristic and compositional characteristic of architecture. The characteristics of the former are the reconstruction of the urban structure by the readjustment of an urban axis which is based on historical continuity of the city, the open court which is a passage transformed from colonnade that is the historical vernacular type and the respect for the city-line which goes with historical context. The characteristics of the latter are the use transformed of nine square which gives consideration to centrality and typology at the same time and the hierarchic division of the principal space and the subordinate space for the functional typical purpose. This analysis shows that Grassi's architecture is on the base of historical continuity and urban reality and for him architectural work is mental work which conflict with the real world for the reconstruction of the city.

  • Connective tissue diseases (CTDs) can affect all compartments of the lungs, including airways, alveoli, interstitium, vessels, and pleura. CTD-associated lung diseases (CTD-LDs) may present as diffuse lung disease or as focal lesions, and there is significant heterogeneity between the individual CTDs in their clinical and pathological manifestations. CTD-LDs may presage the clinical diagnosis a primary CTD, or it may develop in the context of an established CTD diagnosis. CTD-LDs reveal acute, chronic or mixed pattern of lung and pleural manifestations. Histopathological findings of diverse morphological changes can be present in CTD-LDs airway lesions (chronic bronchitis/bronchiolitis, follicular bronchiolitis, etc.), interstitial lung diseases (nonspecific interstitial pneumonia/fibrosis, usual interstitial pneumonia, lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia, diffuse alveolar damage, and organizing pneumonia), pleural changes (acute fibrinous or chronic fibrous pleuritis), and vascular changes (vasculitis, capillaritis, pulmonary hemorrhage, etc.). CTD patients can be exposed to various infectious diseases when taking immunosuppressive drugs. Histopathological patterns of CTD-LDs are generally nonspecific, and other diseases that can cause similar lesions in the lungs must be considered before the diagnosis of CTD-LDs. A multidisciplinary team involving pathologists, clinicians, and radiologists can adequately make a proper diagnosis of CTD-LDs.

  • I will compute the rate of merger events in the multi-scale initial conditions to forecast special events driving the anisotropic assembly of dark matter halos and understand their impact on galaxy formation. Beyond halo mergers, I consider all sets of mergers, including wall and lament mergers, as they impact the geometry of galactic infall. Their one- and two-points statistics are computed as a function of cosmic time. I establish the relation between merger rates and connectivity, which is then used to assess the impact the large scale structures on assembly bias. The anisotropy of the cosmic web, as encoded in this theory, is a signi cant ingredient to describe jointly the physics and dynamics of galaxies in their environment, e.g. in the context of intrinsic alignments or morphological diversity.

  • This paper explores the application of matrix factorization, specifically CUR decomposition, in the clustering of Korean language documents by topic. It addresses the unique challenges of Natural Language Processing (NLP) in dealing with the Korean language's distinctive features, such as agglutinative words and morphological ambiguity. The study compares the effectiveness of Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) using CUR decomposition with the classical Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method in the context of Korean text. Experiments are conducted using Korean Wikipedia documents and newspaper data, providing insight into the accuracy and efficiency of these techniques. The findings demonstrate the potential of CUR decomposition to improve the accuracy of document clustering in Korean, offering a valuable approach to text mining and information retrieval in agglutinative languages.

  • A dialogue system includes various morphological analyses for recognizing a user's intention from the user's utterances. However, a user can represent various intentions via emotional states in addition to morphological expressions. Thus, a user's emotion recognition can analyze a user's intention in various manners. This paper presents a new method to automatically recognize a user's emotion for a dialogue system. For general emotions, we define nine categories using a psychological approach. For an optimal feature set, we organize a combination of sentential, a priori, and context features. Then, we employ a support vector machine (SVM) that has been widely used in various learning tasks to automatically classify a user's emotions. The experiment results show that our method has a 62.8% F-measure, 15% higher than the reference system.

  • Many speech recognition systems have used pronunciation lexicon with possible multiple phonetic transcriptions for each word. The pronunciation lexicon is of often manually created. This process requires a lot of time and efforts, and furthermore, it is very difficult to maintain consistency of lexicon. To handle these problems, we present a model based on morphophon-ological analysis for automatically generating Korean pronunciation variants. By analyzing phonological variations frequently found in spoken Korean, we have derived about 700 phonemic contexts that would trigger the multilevel application of the corresponding phonological process, which consists of phonemic and allophonic rules. In generating pronunciation variants, morphological analysis is preceded to handle variations of phonological words. According to the morphological category, a set of tables reflecting phonemic context is looked up to generate pronunciation variants. Our experiments show that the proposed model produces mostly correct pronunciation variants of phonological words. Then we estimated how useful the pronunciation lexicon and training phonetic transcription using this proposed systems.
