  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between female adolescents's relationships with their parents, psychological well-being, and attitudes towards eating. General characteristics of the subjects such as their school grades, and religion, and their parents' level of educational, marital status, and income were also analyzed in relation with the three major variables. Female adolescents' psychological well-being consisted of two indices: self-esteem and depression. The sample of this study consisted of 419 female students from 4 middle schools and 2 high schools located in Jeollabuk-Do province and the data were collected by using the method of self-administered questionnaires. The results of the analyses showed that there were significant differences in the level of parental attachment across parents' marital status, father's education level, and family income. Participants' psychological well-being levels were also different according to their grades, parents' marital status, and father's education level and income; and the level of eating attitude was different according to their school grades. The correlation analyses results indicated that parental attachment was positively related to self-esteem but negatively to a depressive mood. In addition, female students' eating attitudes were negatively associated with parental attachment and self-esteem, but positively with a depressive mood. Finally, multiple regression analysis found that a negative eating attitude was strongly influenced by a depressive mood, while parental attachment seemed to influence eating attitude indirectly through a depressive mood.

  • Objectives : Obesity has been linked to various psychological problems as well as medical complications, especially among adolescents. Previous studies have suggested an association between body weight and depression or self-esteem ; however, there has been little evidence on self-perception of weight and mental health. The aim of this study was to examine the association of perceptional weight status with mental health in Korean adolescents. Methods : This study was based on data obtained from the third Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (2005). The study sample consisted of 583 adolescents (268 boys, 315 girls) aged 12-18 years, who had completed the health survey, the health examination, and the nutritional survey. Participants were divided into two groups based on the actual or perceptional weight status: non-obese and obese. Questionnaires for stress, depressive mood, and suicidal thoughts were utilized as mental health indicators. Results : The agreement between actual and perceptional weight status was moderate (k value, 0.585 ; p<0.01). The influencing factors for the discrepancy between actual and perceptional weight status were body mass index of subjects and their parents' education. The obese group was likely to have higher stress levels and more experience of depressive mood or suicidal ideation in regard to both actual and perceptional weight status. A multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that girls who had perceived themselves as obese were more likely to have an experience of depressive mood than other girls (unadjusted OR, 4.98 ; adjusted OR, 5.15). Conclusion : An experience of depressive mood was significantly associated with the perception of weight status and not actual weight status in Korean female adolescents.

  • The population of Korea is ageing as the number of elderly people increases due to improvements in health care and diet. Accordingly, it is expected that interest in how to live actively during the years after retirement and how to communicate effectively will increase the demand for voice improvement methods and technology. However, the criteria to evaluate the voice strength and characteristics of the elderly are lacking. In this study, we analyzed the acoustic characteristics of elderly women living in the community according to residential status and mental health status (e.g. depressive mood). Accordingly, we selected women (n=63) above the age of 65 age who were living in the Seoul metropolitan area and Daegu Gyeongbuk. The selected subjects were divided into two groups: a normal speaker group (n=40) and a speaker group comprised of those suffering from depressive mood (n=23). This study analyzed the voice characteristics of subjects based on collected data through the sustained phonation of the vowel /a/. It was shown that there were differences among MPT, F0, Jitter, Shimmer and NHR depending on location of residence but no difference with regard to depressive mood. Therefore, we must consider location of residence in elderly as the key factor in demonstrating the voice norms of seniors.

  • This study was conducted to find out residential environment, mood states, ADL(Activity Daily Living) and nursing need of the elderly who live alone. The questionnaire survey was conducted on 154 single household elderly over 65years who live n D-city, Kangwon Province. The data were collected between September 1. 1999 and October 17, 1999 and analyzed by means of SPSS package. The results were as follows; 1. The percentage of the subjects who owned their house was no were than $13\%$., which showed that they still belonged to the economically vulnerable class. As for their residential environment, the average indoor temperature and humidity level were $16.45^{\circ}C\;and\;44.62\%$ respectively during the daytime between September and October, which proved to range within the standard scope. The average indoor illumination level was, however, 43.61 Lux, which showed that their illumination environment was very poor. 2. The average score of their mood states was 3.31. which turned out to be rather low. 3. The mean score of ADL was 1.69, which showed that they didn't have any serious inconveniences in their ordinary lives. 4. The mean score of their nursing need was 275, which proved to be close to the normal level. 5. The higher the room humidity was, the higher their nursing need increased. The higher the degree of illumination level was, the lower the degree of their nursing need was and the higher the level of ADL was. 6. The major factors influencing their moon status were the frequency of their contact with children and room humidity. These two factors could account for $22\%$ of the total mood status. These results suggest that the residential environment should be necessarily considered in the psychological nursing intervention for the elderly who live alone and they should be urgently supported in terms of health policy so that they can maintain the optimum level of illumination during the daytime.

  • Purpose: This research was designed as a pre-post experimental study with a nonequivalent control group to verify the effects of meridian exercise on health status, depression and self-esteem in institutionalized elderly people. Method: The research population included 38 participants, 65 years and over, who were assigned to an experimental group (18) or a control group (20). All of the participants were institutionalized in Seoul Data collection was done from October. 2000 to May, 2001 and the experimental treatment for this study, meridian exercise, was done for a total 30 minutes per session for 12 sessions over two weeks. The exercise was developed by a professor of Oriental Medicine and the researchers involved in this study. The data were analyzed using the SPSS PC+ program. Result: There were no significant differences for general characteristics between the two groups. Physical health status, mental-mood health status, depression and self-esteem were low. Differences in the physical health status of the elderly people was higher in the experimental group (t=16.299, p=.000). The effects of the meridian exercise on mental-mood health status, depression, and self-esteem were statistically significant (t= 10.301, p= .000 ; t=15.579, p=.000, t=14.571, p=.000). Conclusion: According to the results, meridian exercise should be used to improve health status, reduce depression and increase self-esteem, and so promote the quality of life for elderly People who must be institutionalized. A study to measure the physiological index in meridian exercise for elderly people is suggested as a method to set up a Korean nursing intervention to enable elderly people to manage their own health.
