  • The presteamed or prefrozen persimmon blocks of 10cm ${\times}$ 10cm ${\times}$ 15cm were air-dried at room temperature until about 30% moisture content, and then were dried in a MW oven. During drying their internal temperatures were monitored with thermo-couple probes. The presteamed and prefrozen blocks didn't show any improvement in drying rate and moisture gradient when compared with the controls. Checks appeared on the surfaces of most presteamed blocks during air-drying. It has been clearly revealed that the maximum weight, loss must, be less than 2g/min during MW drying to prevent internal checking and that MW drying reduced moisture gradients inside blocks. MW dried the persimmon blocks 440 times faster than conventional kiln.

  • This study attempted to elucidate the ecological niches and influencing environmental factors of Quercus variabilis and Quercus acutissima, which are representative deciduous broad-leaved trees in Korean forests, taxonomically close and genetically similar, under climate change conditions. Under climate change conditions induced by increased CO2 and temperature, soil moisture and nutrient environments were manipulated in four gradients. At the end of the growing, plants were harvested to measure growth responses, calculate ecological niches, and compare them with those of the control. Eperimental plants were grown for 180 days in a glass greenhouse designed with four gradients each for soil moisture and nutrient environments under climate change conditions induced by increased CO2 and temperature. After harvesting, growth responses of leaf traits were measured, ecological niches were calculated, and these were compared with those of the control groups. Furthermore, the responses of the two species' populations were interpreted using principal component analysis(PCA) based on leaf trait measurements. As a result, under climate change conditions, the ecological niche breadth for moisture environment was broader for Quercus variabilis than Quercus acutissima, whereas for the nutrient environment, Quercus acutissima exhibited a broader niche breadth than Quercus variabilis. And the rate of change in ecological niche breadth due to climate change decreased for Quercus variabilis in both moisture and nutrient environments, while for Quercus acutissima, it increased in the moisture environment but decreased in the nutrient environment. Additionally, in terms of group responses, both Quercus variabilis and Quercus acutissima expanded their ecological niches under climate change conditions in both soil moisture and nutrient conditions, with Quercus acutissima exhibiting a broader niche than Quercus variabilis under nutrient conditions. These results indicate that the changes in leaf morphological characteristics and the responses of individuals reflecting them vary not only under climate change conditions but also depending on environmental factors.

  • This research was carried out to offer the basis data for development of optimum drying schedule for a domestic oak species (Quercus grosseserrata B1.) by investigating drying rate. stress, defect, and moisuture gradient with board thicknesses and drying schedules (code number T4-C2 and T3-B1). The results were obtained as follows: 1. Average drying rate and total drying time from 52.2% to 5.8% were 0.105%/hr and 486 hours for drying schedule T4-C2 and those from 62.1% to 8.3% were 0.070%/hr. and 811 hours for drying schedule T3-B1. 2. Drying rates for 28mm- and 31mm-thick boards showed similar tendency, but were significantly different from 25mm- thick board in drying schedule T4-C2 and those for 22mm-, 25mm- 28mm- and 31mm-thick boards showed similar tendency but were significantly different from 19mm- thick boards in drying schedule T3-B1. 3. The moisture gradients for drying schedule T4-C2 were steeper than those for drying schedule T3-B1 during drying period. and especially in early drying stage slow slope of moisture gradients of drying schedule T3-B1 was effective in preventing serious problem of surface checks. 4. Drying stresses were lower in drying schedule T3-B1 than in drying schedule T4-C2 during drying period. 5. Drying schedule T4-C2 was appropriate for 25mm-thick board but not for 28mm- and 31mm-thick board because of strong drying condition. Drying schedule T3-B1 was appropriate for 28mm- and 31 mm-thick board but not for 19mm-, 22mm-, and 25mm-thick board because of weak drying condition.

  • In order to characterize the ecological traits of Q. mongolica, we treated the seedlings of this species with three environmental factors, light, moisture and nutrient gradients from March to October 2007, and measured morphological and ecological 17 characters. Lastly calculated ecological niche breadth and niche overlap between Q. mongolica-Q. acutissima and Q. mongolica-Q. variabilis, and analysed them with a special reference to ecological distribution pattern and their competition relationship in Korea. The ecological niche breadth of Q. mongolica showed the lowest in nutrient treatment, but the highest in soil moisture treatment. The ecological niche value under light was intermediate. On comparison of the ecological niche breadth of three oak species, Q. mongolica showed the highest in light environment, which might be a reason for the dominant distribution in the forest plant community, Korea. The ecological niche overlap of Q. mongolica-Q. acutissima and Q. mongolica-Q. varabilis was the widest in moisture treatment, but the narrowest in nutrient treatment and the intermediate in light one. These results means that these three oak species be most competitive in moisture environment than light or nutrient one, and that there are least differentiated among oak species for soil moisture condition. Cluster and PCA ordination showed that Q. mongolica and Q. acutissima were more closely arranged than Q. mongolica and Q. variabilis. From these results, it can be explained that Q. mongolica have more similar ecological niche with Q. acutissima than with Q. variabilis, consequently competition between Q. mongolica and Q. acutissima is intensive than Q. mongolica and Q. variabilis for environment condition, especially in soil moisture.

  • Background: The plant communities within reservoir drawdown zones are ecologically important as they provide a range of ecosystem services such as stabilizing the shoreline, improving water quality, enhancing biodiversity, and mitigating climate change. The aim of the study was therefore to identify the major environmental factors affecting these plant communities within the drawdown zone of the Soyangho Reservoir in South Korea, which experiences a monsoonal climate, and thereafter to (1) elucidate the plant species responses and (2) compare the soil seedbank composition along main environmental gradients. Results: Two main environmental gradients affecting the plant community structure were identified within the drawdown zone; these were a vertical and longitudinal gradient. On the vertical dimension, a hydrological gradient of flood/exposure, the annual-dominated plant community near the water edge changed to a perennial-dominated community at the highest elevation. On the longitudinal dimension from the dam to the upstream, plant species composition changed from an upland forest-edge community to a lowland riverine community, and this was correlated with slope degree, soil particle size, and soil moisture content. Simultaneously, the composition of the soil seedbank was separated along the vertical gradient of the drawdown zone, with mainly annuals near the water edge and some perennials at higher elevations. The species composition similarity between the seedbank and extant vegetation was greater in the annual communities at low elevation than in the perennial communities at higher elevation. Conclusions: The structures of plant community and soil seedbank in the drawdown zone of a monsoonal riverine reservoir were changed first along the vertical and secondly along the longitudinal gradients. The soil seedbank could play an important role on the vegetation regeneration after the disturbances of flood/exposure in the drawdown zone. These results indicate that it is important to understand the vertical and longitudinal environmental gradients affecting shoreline plant community structure and the role of soil seedbanks on the rapid vegetation regeneration for conserving and restoring the drawdown zone of a monsoonal reservoir.

  • The distribution of plant communities along the Bukhan Riverside in Chun-seong was studied by means of the methods fo Curtis and Pattern. The communities were arranged in a single-dimensioned ordination on the basis of the importance values of the persistent species. Leading dominant species, form the 'low' level to the 'high' levels of the ordination gradient, were Phalaris arundinacea, Salix gilgiana, Artemisia feddei, Zoysia japonica, Pennisetum japonicum, and Arundinella hirta. These species from a continuum from the river to the dry grassland depending upon available soil-moisture. Standing crops in terms of dry weight and the nitrogen content of the above-ground parts of these species showed a good relationship with gradients of available soil-moisture.

  • The environmental gradient analyses and the continum analyses were applied for the ordinationa of forest vegetation in Seonunsan area. In the soil moisture gradient, mesic to xeric, Zelkova serrata, Carpinus tschonoskii, Quercus aliena, Carpinus laxiflora, Quercus serrata, Quercus variabilis and Pinus densiflora type were arranged as a series of sequence along the gradient. In two dimensional analyses of soil moisture and organic matter gradients seven vegetation types mentioned above were also separated one another. Especially Carpinus tschonoskii in mesic-fertile sites adn Pinus densiflora in xeric-sterile were noticeable. The results of continum analyses were corresponded to those of environmental gradient analses for the forest vegetation.

  • The occurrence of longitudinal cracking in concrete deck of box girder bridge is affected by many factors, but the most important factors are the shrinkage and thermal gradient of deck slabs. In this study, therefore, the tensile stresses at the bottom of deck were calculated from the experimental data(autogeneous shrinkage, drying shrinkage, and thermal gradient of deck slab). Also, the possibility of longitudinal cracks at bottom of deck was estimated. For this purpose, full-scale box girder segments have been fabricated and tested. The thermal gradients and shrinkage strains of deck slabs were measured after placement of concrete. Also, analytic program was conducted for the evaluation of longitudinal cracking in bridge deck considering differential shrinkage induced from non-uniform moisture distributions in concrete.

  • The study was carried out in two different forest types viz., Banj oak and Chir pine forests to assess the variation in forest species composition and soil properties along altitudinal gradients in the Garhwal Himalayas. The results of the study showed that between the forests soil moisture was higher in Banj oak forest because of closed canopy and dense forest compared to Chir pine forest. The sand particles were reported higher in Banj oak forest which might be due to the addition of organic matter favouring coarse structure of soil, helping in holding maximum water in soils. However in the Chir pine forest low amount of soil organic matter and presence of clayey soil, develops soil compactness which reduces the penetration of water resulting in high soil bulk density. The higher accumulation of litter and presence of moisture in Banj oak forest favours higher nutrient level of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compared to Chir pine forest. The soil organic carbon also reduced with increasing altitude at both gradients. While bulk density has reverse trend with soil organic carbon in both the forests at different peaks of same region. In Banj oak forest, the highest density and total basal cover was reported 1,100 tree $ha^{-1}$ and 58.86 $m^2\;ha^{-1}$ respectively. However, the highest values of density and total basal cover of Chir pine forest was 560 tree$ha^{-1}$ and 56.94 $m^2\;ha^{-1}$ respectively. The total density and basal cover of both the forests reduced with increasing altitude. The study concludes that Banj oak forest has better nutrient cycling ability, well developed foest floor and has a greater protective and productive features compared to the Chir pine forest which is without lower vegetation cover and having only pine litter accumulation which does not allow any other species to grow.
