  • This study aims to monitor the variation of modal frequencies of steel buildings during their construction sequence. In this respect, construction of a steel building is followed by vibration based measurements. The monitored building is a three-story educational building within a building group whose structural system consists of steel moment resisting steel frames and eccentric braces. Five different acceleration measurements in two perpendicular directions are taken on five different construction stages, starting from the erection of the columns and beams ending with the completion of the construction. The recorded measurements are transferred into frequency domain and the dominant frequencies for each case have been determined. The change in the dominant frequencies is evaluated with the existing construction stages and performed constructional works between the stages. The last measurement, performed on the building in service, revealed the first two dominant frequencies as mutual in X and Y direction, showing that these dynamic modes are torsional modes. This result is investigated by numerical analysis performed with finite element model of the building constructed for design purpose. Lower frequencies and different mode shapes are determined from numerical analysis. The reason of lower frequencies is discussed and the vibration survey is extended to determine the effects of an adjacent building. The results showed that the building is in strong relation with an adjoining building in spite of a designed construction joint.

  • Flexible circular cantilever beams when excited externally introduce a lot of dynamic characteristics. The non-linear elements that these flexible beams develop include non-linearity due to inertia terms, spring, and damping. They show different characteristics of motion from each other. In the modes of lower order, the non-linearity due to spring is prevalent, while the non-linearity due to inertia Is prevalent in the modes of higher order. To analyze these effects the non-linear phenomena are analyzed experimentally. When the response characteristics of non-linear vibration are analyzed using autospectrum, it is possible to analyze the subharmonic and superharmonic mot ion by comparison. The phase change is analyzed using the method of phase portrait and the non-linear characteristics of response characteristics that are developed in flexible structures can be predicted and applied to the stage of design.

  • In this study, structural vibration analyses of a smart unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) have been conducted considering dynamic hub-loads of tilt rotor. Practical computational structural dynamics technique based on the finite element method is applied using MSC/NASTRAN. The present UAV(TR-S5-04) finite element model is constructed as a full three-dimensional configuration with different fuel conditions and tilting angles for helicopter, transient and airplane flight modes. In addition, the 3-dimensional supporting equipment structures of electronic devices are considered for vibration analysis. As the results of this study, transient structural displacements and accelerations are presented in detail. Moreover, vibration characteristics of structural parts and installed equipments are investigated for different fuel conditions and tilting angles.

  • Most of studies, using ESPI method, have handled tension, thermal and vibration analysis, and is limited to isotropic materials. However, tension and vibration simultaneously are loaded in real structure. Also, almost study using ESPI method is locally limited to the analysis on the isotropic materials and a few studies on the anisotropic materials have reported. Existing methods, such as the accelerometer method and FEA method, to analyze vibration have some disadvantages. Using the accelerometer method that is generally used to analyze vibration phenomena, it is impossible to analyze vibration on the oscillating body and one can observe no vibration mode shape during experiment. In case of the FEA method, it is difficult to define boundary conditions correctly if the shape of a body tested is complex, and one can just obtain vibration mode shapes on the peak amplitude in each modes. In this study, plane plate of stainless steel(STS304), isotropic material, that is used as structural steel is analyzed about vibration characteristics under tension. Also, in the study of stainless steel, the characteristics of composite material(AS4/PEEK) used as high strength structural material in aircraft is evaluated about vibration under tension, and studies the effect of tension on vibration.

  • Modal vibration characteristics of a thin annular disk containing narrow radial slots are studied numerically and experimentally. Existing analytical solution is examined based on these results revealing that it can not precisely predict eigenvalues of the disk with slots since it does not accurately consider change in the vibration modes and change in strain energy density distributions due to the slots. Parametric study on slot length found that distortions in the mode shape as well as changes in the corresponding natural frequencies are proportional to the slot length. Consequently, errors in the calculated eigenvalues are also proportional to the slot length and accurate data can not be obtained with existing analytical solution above a certain level of slot length. Same phenomena can be observed in both free-free disk and fixed-free disk.

  • Vibration and sound characteristics of King Song-Dok Bell are ivesigated. Natural frequencies. vibration modes and beat period of the bell are precisely measured. The effect of striking position and the position of nodal lines on the beat characteristics is examined. It is first found that the beat characteristics are quote different according to the position on the bell surface and clear beat is periodically generated on the circumference. It turns out that in King Song-Dok Bell, Dangjwa(the present striking position) is located at the position which makes a beat in the first vibration mode, as welt as it produces very clear beat In the second vibration mode.

  • In this paper, we briefly introduce the test bench and test method of RWA micro-vibration. TAMAM RWA (Reaction Wheel Assembly) micro-vibration was measured on a KISTLER dynamic plate which can measure time signals of three orthogonal forces and torques simultaneously up to 400Hz, and test data was analyzed. Measured data were evaluated with respect to the wheel spin rate and the static/dynamic unbalances were estimated from the extracted first harmonic component. The estimated static and dynamic unbalances were 0.79gㆍcm and 17.4gㆍ$\textrm{cm}^2$ respectively. The resonance mode and two rocking modes were observed as a results of its frequency analysis. Several higher order harmonic components were observed, which comes from its rotor shape as well as the wheel bearing.

  • In a recent construction industry, cable supported structures such as a cable-stayed bridge or space stadium have been increasingly constructed. Generally the stay cables as a critical member should be adjusted to be satisfied with the design tension forces. In this purpose, a vibration method has been applied to estimate the tension forces exerted to the existing stay cables. In this study, cable vibration tests were carried out to estimate the cable tension forces comparing with theoretical and practical formulas. From the measured frequencies obtained from free vibration and impulsive tests, the accuracy of 1he estimated tension forces is confirmed according to use only the first single mode or higher multiple modes.

  • A rotating rigid disk, attached on a flexible shaft or supported by a torsional spring, experiences precessional whirling due to gyroscopic moment loading. It is well known in rotor dynamics area that, as the rotational speed increases, the precessional mode of the rotating rigid disk starts splitting into two: forward and backward precessional modes. On the other hand, it is also well known in disk vibration area that a rotating flexible disk also shows another kind of mode splitting phenomenon due to the rotation, resulting in forward and backward traveling waves. When rotating multiple flexible disks are coupled in vibration with the supporting Flexible shaft, the associated mode splitting should be compatible with the two seemingly different vibration analysis methods. This paper investigates the possibility of fusing the precessional and traveling wave mode splittings so that the bending coupled disk vibrations in HDD spindle systems can be better understood.

  • This paper is concerned with the sweeping damping controller for beam. The active damping characteristics can be enhanced by moving the damper along the longitudinal axis. In this paper, the equation of motion for a beam including a sweeping damping controller is derived and its stability is proved by using Lyapunov stability theorem. It is found from the theoretical study that the sweeping damping controller can enhance the active damping characteristics, so that a single damper can suppress all the vibration modes of the beam. To demonstrate the concept of the sweeping damping control, the eddy current damper was applied to a cantilever, where the eddy current damping can move along the axis. The experimental result shows that the sweeping eddy current damper Is an effective device for vibration suppression.
