  • The resilient mounts of a diesel engine installed onboard a ship should be designed for both static and dynamic loads. If possible, the resonance frequencies of the six rigid body modes of the installation and the flexible modes of the engine support structure should not lie within the engine operation range. In this paper a design criterion is proposed to evaluate an isolation system which involves the summation of dynamic forces transmitted through the resilient mounts and elastic potential energy index stored in the mounts. A case study is also presented in which a diesel engine generator, which had an elastic foundation and was mounted in a 5500 TEU container vessel, was studied both theoretically and experimentally. The theoretical analysis of the test model was performed by using a single mass 6 degree of freedom system. Actual measurements of mechanical vibration of the engine and its foundation onboard were carried out, which showed the importance of including the flexibility of the engine support structure in the mode.

  • This paper investigates the modal acoustic power by a cascade of flat-plate airfoils interacting with homogeneous, isotropic turbulence. Basic formulation for the acoustic power upstream and downstream is based on the analytical theory of Smith and its generalization due to Cheong et al. The acoustic power spectrum has been expressed as the sum of cut-on acoustic modes, whose modal power is the product of three terms: a turbulence series, an upstream or downstream power factor and an upstream or downstream acoustic response function. The effect of these terms in the modal acoustic power has been examined. For isotropic turbulence gust, the turbulent series are only reducing factor of the modal acoustic power. The power factor tends to reduce the modal acoustic power in the upstream direction, although the power factor is liable to increase the modal acoustic power in the downstream direction. The modes close to cut-off are decreasing strongly, especially in the downstream direction. Therefore the modes close to cut-off don't contribute highly to the radiated acoustic power in the downstream direction, although the modal acoustic pressure is high for these modes.

  • This paper presents a theoretical analysis for the free vibration of rectangular tanks partially filled with an ideal liquid. Wet dynamic displacements of the tanks are approximated by combining the orthogonal polynomials satisfying the boundary conditions, since the rectangular tanks are composed of four rectangular plates. The classical boundary conditions of the tanks at the top and bottom ends are considered, such as clamped, simply supported, and clamped-free boundary conditions. As the facing rectangular plates are assumed to be geometrically and structurally identical, the vibration modes of the facing plates of the tanks can be divided into two categories: symmetric and antisymmetric modes with respect to the planes passing through the center of the tanks and perpendicular to the free liquid surface. The liquid displacement potentials satisfying the Laplace equation and liquid boundary conditions are derived, and the wet dynamic modal functions of a quarter of the tanks can be expanded by the finite Fourier transform for compatibility requirements along the contacting surfaces between the tanks and liquid. An eigenvalue problem is derived using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. Consequently, the wet natural frequencies of the rectangular tanks can be extracted. The proposed analytical method is verified by observing an excellent agreement with three-dimensional finite element analysis results. The effects of the liquid level and boundary condition at the top and bottom edges are investigated.

  • The present study provides the numerical results in association with caliper stiffness and friction curve. From the numerical results, it is concluded that the pad vibration modes with dominant displacement in rotation direction is sensitive in the flutter instability. Particularly, the pad rigid mode is shown to become the squeal mode when the caliper stiffness is introduced in brake squeal model. Therefore, the caliper contact stiffness between the pad and caliper is expected to contribute to the squeal modes of the brake pad.

  • Numerical analysis was performed to investigate the heavy-weight impact noise of apartment houses. The FEM is practical method for prediction of low-frequency indoor noise. The results of numerical analysis, the shape of the acoustic modes in room-2 are similar to that of acoustic pressure field at the fundamental frequency of acoustic modes. And the acoustic pressure was amplified at the natural frequency of the acoustic modes and structural modes. The numerical analysis result of sound pressure level at 63 Hz and 125 Hz octave-band center frequency are similar to the test results, but at 250 Hz and 500 Hz have some errors. Considering most of bang-machine force spectrum exists below 100 Hz, the noise at 250 Hz and 500 Hz are not important for heavy-weight impact noise. Thus, the FEM numerical analysis method for heavy-weight impact noise can apply to estimate heavy-weight impact noise for various building systems.

  • Free vibration of a thin-walled laminated composite beam is studied. A general analytical model applicable to the dynamic behavior of a thin-walled channel section composite is developed. This model is based on the classical lamination theory, and accounts for the coupling of flexural and torsional modes for arbitrary laminate stacking sequence configuration. i.e. unsymmetric as well as symmetric, and various boundary conditions. A displacement-based one-dimensional finite element model is developed to predict natural frequencies and corresponding vibration modes for a thin-walled composite beam. Equations of motion are derived from the Hamilton's principle. Numerical results are obtained for thin-walled composite addressing the effects of fiber angle. modulus ratio. and boundary conditions on the vibration frequencies and mode shapes of the composites.

  • This paper presents vibration analyses of hard disk drive (HDD) spindle systems based on the finite element method. The systems under investigation have a cantilevered shaft rotating on hydrodynamic bearings. In particular, the influence of stator's flexibility on major modes has been taken into account in dual ways lumped and distributed-parameter model approfches. Even the latter employs relatively macroscopic elements instead of extremely fine ones Popular in commercial codes. In order to prove the effectiveness of such formulated models, two types of HDD prototypes featuring different hub and stator structures are selected as examples. Compared to the first, the second type has a reinforced stator that would raise the natural frequency of the hub's translational (or sideway) mode. Both free and forced vibration characteristics are computed, and subsequently compared with the experimental data. It is our conclusion that Particularly the Proposed distributed model method is an efficient design tool for state-of-the-art HDD spindle systems.

  • As Cable-stayed bridges were constructed to the long span, they have become bigger and had weaknesses to vibration induced by earthquake, wind and vehicle loads. Structural damages induced by these loads affect the characteristic of vibration modes of structure. Damage detection of cable-stayed bridges by using existing safety diagnosis is difficult to detect the characteristic change of overall structural action. Also it requires very much time and cost. So in this study, the investigation of characteristic change of structural action and the detection of structural damages is analyzed by using characteristic properties of vibration mode before and after structural damage.

  • An accurate substructural synthesis method including random responses synthesis, frequency-response functions synthesis and mid-order modes synthesis is developed based on rigorous substructure description, dynamic condensation and coupling. An entire structure can firstly be divided into several substructures according to different functions, geometric and dynamic characteristics. Substructural displacements are expressed exactly by retained mid-order fixed-interfacial normal modes and residual constraint modes. Substructural interfacial degree-of-freedoms are eliminated by interfacial displacements compatibility and forces equilibrium between adjacent substructures. Then substructural mode vibration equations are coupled to form an exact-condensed synthesized structure equation, from which structural mid-order modes are calculated accurately. Furthermore, substructural frequency-response function equations are coupled to yield an exact-condensed synthesized structure vibration equation in frequency domain, from which the generalized structural frequency-response functions are obtained. Substructural frequency-response functions are calculated separately by using the generalized frequency-response functions, which can be assembled into an entire-structural frequency-response function matrix. Substructural power spectral density functions are expressed by the exact-synthesized substructural frequency-response functions, and substructural random responses such as correlation functions and mean-square responses can be calculated separately. The accuracy and capacity of the proposed substructure synthesis method is verified by numerical examples.
