  • Over the past few decades, considerable numbers of studies on the durability of concrete have been carried out extensively. The majority of these researches have been performed on sound uncracked concrete, although most of in-situ concrete structures have more or less micro-cracks. It is only recent approach that the attention has shifted towards the influence of cracks and crack width on the penetration of chloride into concrete. The penetration of chlorides into concrete through the cracks can make a significant harmful effect on reinforcement corrosion. Author of this study examined the effect of cracks on chloride penetration by short term experiment. However, it is necessary to accomplish the effect by long term experiment to get reliable goal. In this study, the long term and short term experiments were carried out. This can be useful for establishing new species model of chloride penetration through cracks in concrete.

  • In this paper we will introduce an posture error reduction algorithm for Mobile Robot. We classified odometry error into two categories. and focus on systematic odometry error correction only. Because it is the primary reason for mobile robot navigation. For this procedure we used some robot specifications and modeled robot behavior. Through some experiment, we could obtain new system specs. After modeling, Robot navigation precision was improved.

  • Although conventional seismic data processing is based on the assumption that the media are isotropic, the subsurface is often anisotropy in shale formation or carbonate with cracks and fractures. This paper presents the anisotropic parameter and seismic modeling in transversely isotropic media with a vertical symmetry axis using seismic physical modeling. The experiment was successfully carried out with VTI media, laminated bakelite material, using contact transducer of p and s-wave transmission. The variation of velocities with angle of incidence was clearly shown in anisotropic material. Comparing these velocities with the calculated phase velocities, the (P) and (S)-wave velocity observed in anisotropic material was a very good agreement with the calculated values. Anisotropic parameter ${\varepsilon}$, ${\delta}$, ${\gamma}$ was estimated by using Lame's constant calculated from the observed velocity. For the purpose of testing (S)-wave polarization, a birefringence experiment was carried out. The higher velocity was associated with the polarization parallel to the fracture, and the lower velocity was associated with the polarization perpendicular to the fracture.

  • In this paper, we present forecasting ozone concentration with decision support system. Since the mechanism of ozone concentration is highly complex, nonlinear, and nonstationary, modeling of ozone prediction system has many problems and results of prediction are not good performance so far. Forecasting ozone concentration with decision support system is acquired to information from human knowledge and experiment data. Fuzzy clustering method uses the acquisition and dynamic polynomial neural network gives us a good performance for ozone prediction with ability of superior data approximation and self-organization.

  • It is important to make a mechanical structure precisely and reasonably in predicting the dynamic characteristics, controlling the vibration, and designing the structure dynamics. In finite element analysis model updating is appropriate as the design parameter is used to analyze the dynamic system. The errors can be contained from the physical parameters and the element modeling. From the dynamic test, more precise dynamic characteristics can be obtained. In this paper, model updating algorithm is developed using frequency difference between experiment and calculation. Modal frequencies are obtained by experiment and finite element analysis for beams with various cross section and shapes which have added masses and holes in the middle. For plates with and without groove, experiment and analyses are carried out by applying free boundary conditions as well. Mass and stiffness matrices are updated by comparing test and analytical modal frequencies. The result shows that the updated frequencies become closer to the test frequencies in case that both matrices are updated. An improved analytical model is obtained by changing model parameters such that the discrepancy between test and finite element frequencies is minimized. For beam and plate models updating of mass and stiffness matrices can improve the dynamical behavior of the model by acting on the physical parameters such as masses and stiffness.

  • Marine sediment capping is a technique where clean sand is placed over contaminated sediment to reduce the migration of contaminants to the environment. The design of in-situ caps placed over marine sediment must take into consideration the self-weight consolidation of the cap and the consolidation of the sediment as a result of adding the cap layer. Centrifuge tests were adopted to simulate the effects of consolidation settlement of capped marine sediment caused by the placement of a clean sand layer. The modeling of models technique was utilized to verify the correct modeling procedures used in this study. Two centrifuge tests were conducted with the same boundary conditions at different gravitational accelerations of 100 g and 50 g. There was good agreement between these tests. It can be concluded that the centrifuge experiment is able to model consolidation settlement of capped marine sediment.

  • Uncanny Valley is a theory proposed by Japanese robot engineer Masahiro Mori in 1970, and refers to the point where the likability drops sharply when the appearance of a robot becomes very similar to a human being without a fully equipped robot. In this study, the theory of existing literature, related papers, and experimental data were analyzed to examine the Uncanny Valley effect that affects character design. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether the Uncanny Valley effect is applied to modeling virtual characters distributed in the Unreal Engine Marketplace. To this end, 15 characters were selected based on the similarity with humans in the Marketplace of the Unreal Engine, and similarity with humans and likability were investigated and analyzed. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the Uncanny Valley effect was similarly applied to virtual character modeling, and through this, guidelines for the use of characters by indie game developers or individual developers using Unreal engines were presented. In addition, through result analysis, we tried to examine the direction to be pursued when designing characters.

  • A correct and accurate model of optical data storage systems is very important in development and performance evaluation of various data detection algorithms. In this paper, we present an nonlinear modeling scheme of a super-resolution near-field structure (Super-RENS) read-out signal using the canonical piecewise-linear (PWL) and the second-order Volterra models. Nonlinear equalizers may be developed on the basis of the information obtained from this nonlinear modeling. To mitigate the nonlinear inter-symbol interference (ISI), we proposed a new nonlinear equalizer for Super-RENS discs. Its validity is tested with the RF signal samples obtained from a Super-RENS disc. The experiment results verified the possibility that the canonical PWL and the second-older Volterra models can be utilized for nonlinear modeling of Super-RENS systems. The proposed equalizers are superior to the one without equalization in terms of bit error rate (BER).
