  • Substructure coupling or component mode synthesis may be employed in the solution of dynamic problems for structure. The model is partitioned into several subdomains. and a generalized Craig-Bampton representation is derived. In this paper the mode sets(normal modes. constraint modes) have been employed for model reduction. A generalized model reduction procedure has been described. Those reduction methods which adapt constraint modes have been described in detail. As examples. a flexible structure and a 10 DOF damped system are analyzed. Comparison with a conventional reduction method based on a complete model has been made via eigenpairs and dynamic responses.

  • One of important factors in designing array-type MEMS resonators is obtaining a desired frequency response function (FRF) within a specific range. In this paper Krylov subspace-based model order reduction using moment-matching with non-zero expansion points is represented to calculate the FRF of array-type resonators. By matching moments at a frequency around a specific range of the array-type resonators, required FRFs can be efficiently calculated with significantly reduced systems regardless of their operating frequencies. In addition, because of the characteristics of moment-matching method, a minimal order of reduced system with a specified accuracy can be determined through an error indicator using successive reduced models, which is very useful to automate the order reduction process and FRF calculation for structural optimization iterations.

  • A method of weight evaluation of the load-bearing structural elements of cars is presented and the weight ratio of the analysis model is investigated. Replacing the materials of floor elements of the car into the high-strength steel, a considerable weight-reduction of the model has been obtained. The 1500cc model is selected for the present study and the stick model analysis is employed for the structural analysis. The torsional stiffness of the weight-reduced model is also evaluated and it is shown it has a reasonable rigidity. The ratio of the weight of the load-bearing structural elements to the unladen vehicle weight of cars is about 0.12for the 1500cc model and the weight-reduction of this study can be obtained around 17% of the weight of the load-bearing structural elements.

  • This paper proposes the model order reduction with pass band error reduction in the frequency domain of discrete time linear systems. The algorithm is the new method of reduced order model which reduces passband error by changing controllability and observability gramian used with weighted functions. A numerical example shows that this algorithm has lower passband error than balanced w&l and weighted function characteristics in frequency domain.

  • A distributed hydrologic model of an urban drainage area on Bugok drainage area in Oncheon stream was developed and combined with a optimization method to determine the optimal location and number of best management practices (BMPs) for storm water runoff reduction. This model is based on the SCS-CN method and integrated with a distributed hydrologic network model of the drainage area using system of 4,211 hydrologic response units (HRUs). Optimal location is found by locating HRU combination that leads to a maximum reduction in peak flow at the drainage outlet in this model. The results of this study indicate the optimal locations and numbers of BMPs, however, for more exact application of this model, project cost and SCS-CN reduction rate of structural facilities such infiltration trench and pervious pavement will have to be considered.

  • Most of the studies use model order reduction for low frequency (LF) response analysis due to their high computational efficiency. In LF response analysis, one of model order reduction, algebraic substructuring (AS) retains all LF modes when using the modal superposition. However, in mid-frequency (MF) response analysis, the LF modes make very little contribution and also increase the number of retained modes, which leads to loss of computational efficiency. Therefore, MF response analysis should consider low truncated modes to improve the computational efficiency. The current work is focused on improving the computational efficiency using a AS and a frequency sweep algorithm. Finite element simulation for a MEMS resonator array showed that the performance of the presented method is superior to a conventional method.

  • Thermal model reduction algorithms and techniques are introduced to condense a huge satellite panel thermal model into the simplified model on the purpose of calculating the thermal responses of a satellite on orbit. Guyan condensation algorithm with the substitution matrix manipulation is developed and the mathematical procedure is depicted step by step. A block-form LU decomposition method is also invited to compare the developed algorithm. The constructed reduced thermal model induced from the detailed model based on a real satellite panel is satisfying the correlation criterion of ${\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for the validity accuracy. Guyan condensation algorithm is superior to the block-form LU decomposition method on computation time.

  • In order to obtain dynamic behaviors of complex structures, it demands large amounts computational cost and time to perform the numerical analysis. The model reduction method helps these problems by dividing the full model into primary and unnecessary parts. In this research, we perform the modal analysis using the dynamic substructuring method, which is one of the model reduction methods, in order to obtain the dynamic characteristics of the cylindrical structures efficiently. To select the master degrees of freedom (dofs), we consider the mode shapes of the cylindrical structures. And then, we identify the validity of the dynamic substructuring method by applying the method to the simple cylinder and core support barrel (CSB) which is one of the reactor internals with the cylindrical shape. The results demonstrate that the dynamic characteristics from the dynamic substructuring method are well matched with the original method.

  • We present an algorithm for the complexity reduction of a general Gaussian mixture model by using a penalized likelihood method. One of our important assumptions is that we begin with an overfitted model in terms of the number of components. So our main goal is to eliminate redundant components in the overfitted model. As shown in the section of simulation results, the algorithm works well with the selected densities.

  • This paper deals with a balanced model reduction for uncertain nonlinear systems via T-S fuzzy approach. We define a generalized controllability/observability gramian and obtain a balanced state space model using generalized gramians which can be obtained from solutions of linear matrix inequalities. We present a balanced model reduction scheme by truncating not only state variables but also uncertain elements. An upper bound of the model reduction error will also be suggested. In order to demonstrate the efficacy of our method, a numerical example will be presented.
