  • The seismic design for an axial blower is the procedure in which the required response spectrum (RRS) is computed by using the floor response spectrum (FRS). The seismic design is very important to reduce severe damages from an earthquake; therefore, the seismic design has been a great concern in engineering society. In this study, after finite element modeling is established by using Ansys, the modal data are obtained such as the natural frequencies, the participation factor, and so on. With these data, the RRS is acquired by a numerical approach. The seismic safety of the axial blower is evaluated.

  • In this paper, modeling methods for the structural dynamic analysis employing single reference frame are presented and their modal and transient analysis results are compared. The geometric stiffening effects often occur when structures undergo large overall motion. These effects were considered in several structural previous modeling methods but the role of reference frame has never been scrutinized. In this study, modeling methods employing single reference frame are presented, and their numerical results are compared. The results show that discrepancy between the two modeling methods increases as the eccentricity of the structural system and the magnitude of the large overall motion increase.

  • The response analysis of frame structure with open section beams considering warping conditions and short duration load have been performed. When a beam of frame structure is subjected under torsional moment, the cross section will deform a warping as well as twist. For some thin-walled sections warping will be large, and accompanying warping restraint will induce axial and shear stresses and reduce the twist of beam which stiffens the beam in torsion. Because of impact or blast loads, the wave propagation effects become increasingly important as load duration decreases. This paper presents that a warping restraint in finite element model effects the behavior of beam deformation, dynamic mode shape and response analysis. The computer modelling of frame is discussed in linear beam element model and linear thin shell element model, also presents a correlation between computer predicted and actual experimental results for static deflection, natural frequencies and mode shapes of frame. A method to estimate the number of normal modes that are important is discussed.

  • In this paper, to evaluate the design properties of 3D optical multimode interference (MMI) couplers with ultracompact width, modal transmission line theory and effective dielectric method are combined with together. A coupling efficiency based on the composed approach is defined, and the coupling length is numerically determined for the design of 3 dB coupler, cross coupler and bar coupler. The simulation result shows that the designed MMI coupler has a low insertion loss and a high splitting ratio.

  • Various modeling techniques for ultrasonic wave propagation and scattering problems in finite solid media are presented. Elastodynamic boundary value problems in inhomogeneous multi-layered plate-like structures are set up for modal analysis of guided wave propagation and numerically solved to obtain dispersion curves which show propagation characteristics of guided waves. As a powerful modeling tool to overcome such numerical difficulties in wave scattering problems as the geometrical complexity and mode conversion, the Boundary Element Method(BEM) is introduced and is combined with the normal mode expansion technique to develop the hybrid BEM, an efficient technique for modeling multi-mode conversion of guided wave scattering problems.

  • The purpose of this paper is to get a powerful tool for response analysis of a spherical dome subjected to dynamic excitation based on mathematically analytical method, i. e., the Galerkin procedure in modal analysis, with sufficient accuracy and practicality. At first, this paper provides an approximate solution of eigen modes, which has sufficient accuracy and praticallity for response analysis in symmetric and antisymmetric state. In the second stage of this paper, response analysis of a dome subjected to horizontal earthquakes is executed as the application of these approximate modes. Many important response characteristics may manifest themselves through parametric survey of material and geometric properties.

  • As for the safety evaluation of existing large-scale structures, methods for the estimation of structural and dynamic properties are studied. Sequential prediction error method in time domain and frequency response function estimators in frequency domain are examined. For this purpose, impact tests are performed on a steel frame structure with 2 bays and 3 floors. Results from both methods are found to be consistent to each others. However those from the finite-element analysis are slightly different from the experimental results. The discrepancies may be caused by the improper modeling of the complex behavior at the connection joints of the model structure.

  • The vibration characteristic analysis of sandwich cylindrical shells subjected with magnetorheological (MR) elastomer and constraining layer are considered in this study. And, the discrete finite element method is adopted to calculate the vibration and damping characteristics of the sandwich cylindrical shell system. The effects of thickness of the MR elastomer, constraining layer, applied magnetic fields on the vibration characteristics of the sandwich shell system are also studied in this paper. Additionally, the rheological properties of the MR elastomer can be changed by applying various magnetic fields and the properties of the MR elastomer are described by complex quantities. The natural frequencies and modal loss factor of the sandwich cylindrical shells are calculated for many designed parameters. The core layer of MR elastomer is found to have significant effects on the damping behavior of the sandwich cylindrical shells.

  • This paper deals with the development of expressions relating structural seismic response parameters to the epicentral distances of an earthquake and the natural period of several reinforced concrete buildings (6, 9 and 12 storey), with three floor plans: symmetric, monosymmetric, and unsymmetric. These structures are subjected to seismic spectrum of accelerations collected during the Boumerdes earthquake (Algeria, May $21^{st}$, 2003, Mw=6.8) at different epicentral distances. The objective of this study is to develop relations between structural responses namely: base shear, storey displacements, interstory drifts and epicentral distance and fundamental period for a given earthquake. The seismic response of the buildings is carried out in both longitudinal transverse and directions by the response spectrum method (modal spectral approach).

  • FRP has been used very much as high strength core materials for insulators because of its high strength and good insulation properties. In this study cantilever, tension and torsion stress were simulation along to the unidirection glass fiber. In addition, FRP was made by pultrusion method. This paper proposed the procedure of the finite element model updating and pretest using the commercial finite element code MSC. Nastran. To enhance the efficiency of experimental modal analysis, we proposed the process which is the selection of the locations and the number of measurement points for pre-test.
