  • Mobile Ad-Hoc networks (MANET) has been getting the spotlight in the area of the wireless networks because of its flexibility and salability, and developing of many applications with it. As a consequence, MANETs are required to process not only simple data traffics, but also multimedia traffics, which has some constraints on the performances. However, unlike wired-networks, the wireless networks have frequent route-disconnections due to some reasons such as channel errors and mobility. Such frequent link disconnections makes the delivery of multimedia traffics difficult. Even though there many researches on multimedia transmissions on various environments, the performances of multimedia transmissions over fading channel and mobility even using various routing protocols have not been evaluated. Therefore, this paper extensively simulates the MPEG-4 video transmission over fading channel environment with node's mobility. In addition, the performances with two routing protocols such as AODV and DSR are compared. Finally, the simulation results shows that DSR protocol has the better performances to deliver MPEG-4 traffic.

  • NanoQplus, which is an embedded operating system for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and developed by Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), provides programmer-friendly preemptive multi-threading programming technique, but it has poor network protocol stack, as compared to TinyOS, one of the famous operating systems for WSNs. In this paper, we apply dynamic MANET on-demand routing (DYMO) protocol, which is being standardized in Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), to NanoQplus. Since DYMO has been proposed for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) and MANETs have less resource restrictions than WSNs, the basic DYMO protocol cannot be applied to WSNs without modifications. Moreover, coherence with MAC protocol should be considered in order to eliminate redundant data between MAC and network layers. Thus, we propose a modified version of the basic DYMO protocol for NanoQplus. The experimental results from a real sensor network test-bed show that the DYMO implementation using NanoQplus works efficiently in WSNs.

• In mobile ad-hoc networks, it should be the most important issue to reduce the power consumption of communications, because the resource of a node is limited in these networks. In existing cluster-based routing protocols, cluster headers participate in almost all communication processes. Therefore the lifetime of the cluster header is shortened and it does not have the effective route. In the proposed cluster-based routing protocol, the cluster header transmits a control packet which gives the route information to member nodes. This makes that the cluster header decreases the number of participating in communications, and that node members do not have to communicate trough the cluster header. This results in extending the lifetime of the cluster header, and having the effective route, data transmission rate and improved stability of routes.

  • Community network is a communication environment where heterogeneous devices can access and communicate with each other at any time and at any space to share information. To do so, mobile devices are required to be self-configured even in absence of communication infrastructures. Semi-infrastructured wireless ad-hoc network is a promising solution to meet with such a requirement. This paper proposes the VTC(virtual topology coordinator) system as an evaluation tool for examining network protocols that are intended to be deployed in the semi-infrastructured ad-hoc networks. VTC emulates multi-hops wireless network topology virtually using a mechanism of selective receiving MAC frame in a small area, where only a single hop communication is available. VTC system cannot consider all properties introduced in real wireless network, but do more wireless properties than verification through simulation.

  • This paper presents a new geographic distributed hash table (GDHT) for MANETs or Mesh networks, where virtual geographic protocol is used. In previous wort GDHT is applied to a network scenario based on two dimensional Cartesian coordinate system. Further, logical data space is supposed to be uniformly distributed. However, mobile node distribution in a network using virtual geographic routing is not matched to data distribution in GDHT. Therefore, if we apply previous GDHT to a virtual geographic routing network, lots of DHT data are probably located at boundary nodes of the network or specific nodes, resulting in long average-delay to discover resource (or service). Additionally, in BVR(Beacon Vector Routing) or LCR(Logical Coordinate Routing), because there is correlation between coordinate elements, we cannot use normal hash function. For this reason, we propose to use "geographic hash function" for GDHT that matches data distribution to node distribution and considers correlation between coordinate elements. We also show that the proposed scheme improves resource discovery efficiently.

  • MANET is not suitable to be applied to vehicle environments because of frequent path loss and path re-routing. To solve these problem, It is known that location-based routing protocol VANET is efficient. But, the VANET algorithm does not consider urban environments due to frequent vehicle movement and jamming by tall building. In this paper, we propose an efficient routing protocol to improve transfer efficiency and reduce transfer hop count. in urban networks.

  • Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANET) consist of mobile nodes which are usually powered by battery Approaches for minimizing power consumption have been proposed for all network layers and devices. IEEE 802.11 DCF (Distributed Coordination Function), a well-known medium access control protocol for MANETS, also defines a power save mode operation. The nodes in power save mode periodically repeat the awake state and the doze state in synchronized fashion. When all nodes are in the awake state, the exchange the announcements for the subsequent message transmission with neighbors. The nodes that send or receive the announcements stay awake for data transmission, and others go into the dole state. The previous works for enhancing the power save mode operation have focused on shortening the duration of the awake state. We observed that the longer sleeping period results in seriously long delivery latency and the consequent unnecessary power consumption as well, because the packets can move forward only one hop for a fixed interval. In this paper, we propose an improved protocol for the power save mode of IEEE 802.11 DCF, which allows the flooding packets to be forwarded several hops in a transmission period. Our approach does not reduce the duration of compulsory awake period, but maximizes its utilization. Each node propagates the announcements for next flooding to nodes of several hops away, thus the packets can travel multiple hops during one interval. Simulation results of comparison between our scheme and the standard show a reduction in flooding delay maximum 80%, and the unicasting latency with accompanying flooding flows near 50%, with slight increase of energy consumption.

  • A mobile ad hoc network is instant and heuristic, and it is also vulnerable and volatile. Since topology and route changes are frequent, no single routing protocol designed for a conventional network performs well. Some protocols suffer from significant performance degradation when the number of nodes increases, or when nodes become highly mobile. In this paper we investigate a way to adaptively select a routing protocol that fits to the real-time network conditions. The first phase of our study is to analyze the performances of two classes of routing protocols under various network scenarios. The second phase consists of constructing a routing protocol selection reference. All nodes continue to monitor the status of neighbor nodes and control packets exchanged. Then, the aggregated information is periodically compared against the protocol selection reference. The selected routing protocol is maintained throughout the network until the network property changes substantially. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified by a set of computer simulations using the OPNET modeler. The experimental results show that selectively changing routing protocol adaptive to the network conditions greatly improves the efficacy of bandwidth utilization.

  • Self-configuration network model is to overcome the limits of data communications at sea. As a research for enhancing the connectivity and scalability of data networks at sea using the diversity and heterogeneity of the data networks on land, in this paper, a routing scheme (NLTCR) based on not conventional hop counts but distances to destination ships is introduced. The NLTCR seeks an optimal route by normalized distances to a destination, and transmission characteristics of applications and carriers. Performance is evaluated and compared with those of the max-win (MWR) and the normalized transmission characteristics (NTCR) based schemes.
