  • This study investigated the purification process of groundwater contaminated with zinc and arsenic using a permeable reactive barrier with a zero-valent iron/pumice mixture. We determined the removal rates of the contaminants for 30 days. In this study, column reactor filled with the zero-valent iron/pumice reactive mixture was used. Experimental results showed that the mixture exhibited an almost complete removal of the zinc and arsenic ions. Arsenic was removed via co-precipitation and adsorption processes while zinc ions were asorbed in active sites. The purification process of water from the metal ionscontinued for 30 days with constant hydraulic conductivity because of the enhanced porosity of the pumice and interparticle distance between the zero-valent iron and pumice. Contaminants removal rates and the remediation mechanism for each reactive system are described in this paper.

  • Microwave (Hybrid) Heating (MHH) was used to oxidize and sinter Al-Al2O3 powder mixture. For 25 v/o Al specimen and 35 v/o Al specimen, the total processing to produce low-shrinkage reaction bonded alumina was carried out within 1 hour even though conventional furnace process took more than 10 hours. Compared with conventional fast firing process, MHH process increased more than 40% oxidation at the same temperature, and these high oxidation rates were thought to be caused by the surface ohmic current on Al particles.

  • Freezing of an aqueous sodium cWoride solution (Nacl- H20) saturating a packed bed with ini¬tial salt concentrations of 5, 10, 15(k by weight is investigated experimentally in a rectangular cav¬ity. The system was cooled from the top, bottom and a vertical side wall. For the freezing experi¬ments from below, there was little effect of the initial salt concentration throughout the freezing process, and the global freezing rate was not affected by the initial salt concentration. For the freezing from above, the size of the mush region decreased and the mushlliquid interface became flatter as the initial liquid concentration is decreased. For the freezing from vertical side wall, reheating of the mixture was intensified with an increase in the initial salt concentration. For Ci= 5%, supercooling was observed only at the early times of freezing process, but for Ci= 15% small supercooling was observed throughout the freezing process.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the catalytic burner to bum LPG and toluene alternately which can be applied to the dryer of an acryl coating process of textile. It was difficult to obtain complete conversion when the catalytic burner was installed to downward direction. The catalytic burner was improved by introducing the forced diffusion combustion air and the premixing air. The optimal operating conditions for the newly improved catalytic burner were obtained. The catalytic burner for toluene mixture was also investigated to incinerate toluene mixture exhausted from drying process. Results showed that the catalytic burner could oxidize toluene mixture completely at the proper operating conditions. Finally, the catalytic burner to bum LPG and toluene alternately was applied to the dryer of acryl coating. By using the catalytic burner, benefits of energy savings and environmental protection were obtained.

  • We studied a modelling process for unimodal and multimodal circular data by using von Mises and its mixture distribution. In particular we suggested EM algorithm to find ML estimates of the mixture model. Simulation results showed the suggested methods are very accurate. Applications to two kinds of real data sets are also included.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the change of the shape of sponge cake in proportion to the raw material mixture and the degree of dough. It is examined that the measures of the degree of dough in proportion to the material mixture, and the sense examination and measure of moisture with this sponge cake. The test results indicate that 50% sponge cake is most soft among the ratio of other material mixtures, and sponge cake is more soft as the degree of dough is lower. Therefore, the shape of sponge cake is greatly changed in proportion to the mixture of materials and the degree of dough.

  • The mixture model is a very powerful and flexible tool in clustering analysis. Based on the Dirichlet process and parsimonious Gaussian distribution, we propose a new nonparametric mixture framework for solving challenging clustering problems. Meanwhile, the inference of the model depends on the efficient online variational Bayesian approach, which enhances the information exchange between the whole and the part to a certain extent and applies to scalable datasets. The experiments on the scene database indicate that the novel clustering framework, when combined with a convolutional neural network for feature extraction, has meaningful advantages over other models.

  • The effects of density change of ambient gas on mixture formation process have been investigated in high temperature and pressure field. To analyze the mixture formation process of evaporating diesel spray is important for emissions reduction in actual engines. Ambient gas density was selected as experimental parameter. The ambient gas density was changed from $r_a=5.0kg/m^3\;to\;r_a=12.3kg/m^3$ with a high pressure injection system(ECD-U2). For visualization of the experiment phenomenon, a CVC(Constant Volume Chamber) was used in this study. The ambient temperature and injection pressure are kept as 700K and 72MPa, respectively. The images of liquid and vapor phase in the evaporating free spray were simultaneously taken by exciplex fluorescence method. As experimental results, with increasing ambient gas density, the tip penetration of the evaporating free spray decreases due to the increase in the drag force from ambient gas.

  • The combined effects of a sanitizer mixture solution and antimicrobial ice on the quality of salted Chinese cabbages were examined. Salted Chinese cabbages were treated with a sanitizer mixture (comprised 50 ppm aqueous $ClO_2$ and 0.5% citric acid), packed in 2% brine and antimicrobial ice, and stored for 12 days at 4 and $10^{\circ}C$. Microbiological data on the salted Chinese cabbages after washing with the sanitizer mixture indicated that the populations of total aerobic bacteria, and yeast and molds decreased by 2.20 and 1.28 log CFU/g after treatment with the sanitizer mixture. In addition, coliforms population of salted Chinese cabbage after 12 days storage at $4^{\circ}C$ in the combined mixture of the sanitizer and antimicrobial ice was 3.22 log CFU/g, which was a significantly different from that of control (5.46 log CFU/g). The combined treatment of sanitizer mixture, antimicrobial ice, and low temperature at $4^{\circ}C$ suppressed reduction of pH and elevation of titratable acidity, resulting in delaying the growth of lactic acid bacteria. Differences in salinity, hardness, and Hunter's $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$ values among treatments were negligible during storage at $4^{\circ}C$. Therefore, this study suggests that a combination of sanitizer mixture, antimicrobial ice treatment, and low temperature storage could improve the microbial safety and quality of salted Chinese cabbages during storage.
