The complexation characteristics of mixed [2 + 2'] calix[4]aryl derivatives (3 and 4) with alkali metal cations were investigated by the mPW1PW91 (hybrid HF-DF) calculation method. The total electronic and Gibbs free energies of the various complexes (cone, partial-cone, 1,2-alternate, and 1,3-alternate) of sodium and potassium cations with 3 and 4 were analyzed and compared. The structures of the endo- or exo-complexes of the alkali metal cation with the host 3 were optimized using the mPW1PW91/6-31G(d) method, followed by mPW1PW91/6-311+G(d) calculations. The structures of the endo- or exo-complexes of the alkali metal cation with the host 4 were optimized using the mPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p) method. The mPW1PW91 calculated relative energies of the various conformations of the free hosts (3 and 4) suggest that the cone conformers of 3 and 4 are the most stable. The mPW1PW91calculations also suggest that the complexation efficiencies of the sodium ion with hosts 3 and 4 are about 24 and 27 kcal/mol better than those of the potassium ion, respectively. These trends are in good agreement with the experimental results. The exo-complexation efficiencies of the sodium ion toward the conformers of hosts 3 and 4 are roughly 14 and 17 kcal/mol better than those for the endo-$Na^+$-complexes of 3 and 4, respectively. The exo-complexation of the cone isomer of 3 with cation could be confirmed by the differences of the diagnostic C=O bands in the free host and its complex's IR spectra.

We have fabricated phosphorescent white organic light-emitting devices (WOLEDs) with a spin-coated poly(Nvinylcarbazole) [PVK] host layer. Iridium(III) bis[(4,6-difluorophenyl)-pyridinato-N,$C^{2'}$]picolinate (FIrpic), tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium(III) [$Ir(ppy)_3$], and tris(2-phenyl-1-quinoline)iridium(III) [$Ir(phq)_3$], were used as the blue, green, and red guest materials, respectively. The PVK was mixed with FIrpic, $Ir(ppy)_3$, and $Ir(phq)_3$ molecules in a chlorobenzene solution and spin-coated in order to prepare the emission layer; 3-(4-biphenylyl)-4-phenyl-5-(4-tertbutylphenyl)-1,2,4-triazole (TAZ) was used as an electron transport material. The resultant device structure was ITO/PVK:FIrpic:$Ir(ppy)_3:Ir(phq)_3$/TAZ/LiF/Al. The electroluminescence, efficiency, and electrical conduction characteristics of the WOLEDs based on the doped PVK host layer were investigated. The maximum current efficiency of the three wavelength WOLED with the doped PVK host was 19.2 cd/A.
Previous observations demonstrated that various immunosuppressive agents and their combination therapies can increase allograft survival rates. However, these treatments may have serious side effects and cannot substantially improve or prolong graft survival in acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). To improve the therapeutic potency of divalent immunoadhesins, we have constructed and produced several tetravalent forms of immunoadhesins comprising each of cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen-4 (CTLA4), CD2, and lymphocyte activation gene-3 (LAG3). Flow cytometric and T cell proliferation analyses displayed that tetravalent immunoadhesins have a higher binding affinity and more potent efficacy than divalent immunoadhesins. Although all tetravalent immunoadhesins possess better efficacies, tetravalent forms of CTLA4-Ig and LAG3-Ig revealed higher inhibitory effects on T cell proliferation than tetravalent forms of TNFR2-Ig and CD2-Ig. In vitro mixed lymphocytes reaction (MLR) showed that combined treatment with tetravalent CTLA4-Ig and tetravalent LAG3-Ig was highly effective for inhibiting T cell proliferation in both human and murine allogeneic stimulation. In addition, both single tetravalent-form and combination treatments can prevent the lethality of murine acute GVHD. The results of this study demonstrated that co-blockade of the major histocompatibility complex class (MHC)II:T cell receptor (TCR) and CD28:B7 pathways by using tetravalent human LAG3-Ig and CTLA4-Ig synergistically prevented murine acute GVHD.
The electrical and optical properties of electrophosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with modified hole blocking layer (HBL) were investigated. Well-known 2,9-dimethyl-4,7- diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BCP) HBL is mixed with electrophosphorescent host material (4,4'-N,N'- dicarbazole-biphenyl: CBP) or electrophosphorescent dopant material (fac-tris(2-phenylpyridine) iridium: $Ir(ppy)_3$) or both. The highest external quantum efficiency was obtained in the device with $BCP-CBP-Ir(ppy)_3$ mixed HBL and we attribute this result to the additional charge recombination in mixed-HBL.

The occurrence of Laminarionema elsbetiae (Ectocarpaceae, Phaeophyceae), as epi-endophyte of Rhodymenia pseudopalmata (Rhodymeniales, Rhodophyta), described from Santa Isabel, Rawson, Argentina. L. elsbetiae grows in the host tissues forming epi-endophytic relationship in the epidermal, cortical and medullar layers. Epiphytic thalli of L. elsbetiae were unbranched filaments emerging from hostis surface. Reproductive structures of L. elsbetiae on the host were absent. On the contrary, free cultured individuals formed different reproductive structures. Macrozoosporangia containing a single large motile zoospore originated from vegetative cells, they were conical to cylindrical in shape, 30-50 ${\mu}m$ in length and 18-20 ${\mu}m$ in wide. Uniseriate plurilocular zoosporangia were cylindrical shape, 40 ${\mu}m$ in length and 10-13 ${\mu}m$ in wide. Sexual fusion was not seen. In mixed cultures of L. elsbetiae with R. pseudopalmata fronds, L. elsbetiae infected the host, grew as in natural host and, formed macrosporangia between host subcortical cells. Gametophytes of L. elsbetiae were filaments with diffuse growth, branched with a branch pattern alternate or opposite. Gametangia were plurilocular, uni or biseriate and lateral. When mature they contained 2 to 6 isogametes. The presence L. elsbetiae on R. pseudopalmata could be defined as an epi-endophytic relationship. The percentage of infection of R. pseudopalmata thalli by L. elsbetiae was 34%.A25% of the infected thalli presented a low, non-symptomatic level infection, whereas a 62% and a 13% of them exhibited respectively moderate and high indexes of infection.
Single crystal EPR and optical studies of a mixed ligand zinc(II) complex doped with VO(II) ion is carried out to establish the structural properties. The angular variation of vanadyl hyperfine lines indicates a single site, with spin Hamiltonian parameters as: $g_{xx}=1.985$, $g_{yy}=1.979$, $g_{zz}=1.943$; $A_{xx}=8.71$, $A_{yy}=6.41$ and $A_{zz}=17.80$ mT. By comparing the direction cosines of principal g and A values with the direction cosines of metalligand bonds, it has been confirmed that the vanadyl ion has entered the lattice interstitially. The exact interstitial position of VO(II) in host lattice has been calculated using the fractional coordinates of atoms in the host lattice out of many assumptions. The EPR and optical data have been confirmed to obtain various bonding parameters, from which the nature of the bonding in the complex is discussed. FT-IR confirms the formation of structure of host lattice.
Phage utilizing medium and BL agar supplemented with antibiotic Tc(tetracycline) were developed as selective media for the isolation and counting of bifidobacteria in dairy products. The former was based on the host specificity of phage. When bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus casei HY 2782 were mixed together in dairy product, L. casei HY 2782 was laysed by J1 phage which has host specificity to L. casei HY 2782 whereas bifidobacteria grew well on the selective medium added wIth J1 phage. The latter was found to inhibit the growth of S. salivarius subsp. thermophilus, L. acidophilus, and L. casei, but commercial bifidobacteria grew well in Tc-containing BL agar.
To develop the potential use as new host strain for gene cloning the optimal conditions for transform-ation of alkali-tolerant Bacillus sp. were examined. The Bacillus sp. YA-14 was cultured to late logarith-mic growth phase at 37$^{\circ}C$ in modified SPI medium (pH8.0) containing 0.4% MgSO4 0.5mM CaCl2 1 ml of competent cell was mixed with 0.5$\mu$g of plasmid DNA and incubated with shaking at 37$^{\circ}C$ for 40min. The transformation frequency under the optimal condition was 4.53$\times$10-6 CFU/ml/g plasmid DNA. The electrophresis and stably maintained in the new host.

The multi-host pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, possesses an extraordinary versatility which makes it capable of surviving the adverse conditions provided by environmental, host, and, presumably, competing microbial factors in its natural habitats. Here, we investigated the P. aeruginosa-Bacillus subtilis interaction in laboratory conditions and found that some P. aeruginosa strains can outcompete B. subtilis in mixed planktonic cultures. This is accompanied by the loss of B. subtilis viability. The bactericidal activity of P. aeruginosa is measured on B. subtilis plate cultures. The bactericidal activity is attenuated in pqsA, mvfR, lasR, pilB, gacA, dsbA, rpoS, and phnAB mutants. These results suggest that P. aeruginosa utilizes a subset of conserved virulence pathways in order to survive the conditions provided by its bacterial neighbors.
Using a $Ir(ppy)_3$ doped in the TCTA:$Bepp_2$ mixed host and N- and P-doped in TCTA:$Bepp_2$ charge transport layers, an ideal energy level alignment technology is developed. A very low roll-off current efficiency of 7.4 % at a luminance of $10,000\;cd/m^2$ with this technology is demonstrated in green phosphorescent OLEDs.
