Nutrient Contributions of the Five Meal Components in School Lunch: $Entr{\'{e}}e$, Milk, Vegetable/Fruit, Bread/Grain, and Miscellaneous

  • This retrospective study was designed to evaluate the nutrient contributions of the five meal components of school lunch menus planned for elementary students in two school districts (District A and B) in the Midwestern state of the United States. The 4-week cycle menu was planned for two time periods (Period 1 and Period 2) following guidelines for NuMenus and general menu planning principles. Menu components of planned and served menus for two time periods were analyzed using $Nutri-Kids^{TM}$. No significant differences in the nutrient content of between Periods 1 and 2 were found for District A. District B served significantly more vitamin A and total fat in Period 1 and significantly more calories, iron, vitamin A, protein, and total fat in Period 2 than was planned. The major nutrients provided by the entree component included protein, calories, cholesterol, total fat, saturated fat, and sodium. Milk was an important source of calcium and provided approximately one-third of the total protein and vitamin A in the meal. The vegetable/fruit component was the major source of vitamins A and C. The grain/bread component provided approximately 20% of the carbohydrates among five meal components. The miscellaneous component affected the sodium and fat content of the menus. Menu planners can use the results of this study to enhance their knowledge of the nutrient contributions of each meal component and as inputs for planning menus that meet children's nutritional requirements.

Classification of Forest Cover Types in the Baekdudaegan, South Korea

  • This study was carried out to introduce the forest cover types of the Baekdudaegan inhabiting the number of native tree species. In order to understand the vegetation distribution characteristics of the Baekdudaegan, a vegetation survey was conducted on the major 20 mountains of the Baekdudaegan. The vegetation data were collected from 3,959 sample points by the point-centered quarter method. Each mountain was classified into 4-7 forests by using various multivariate statistical methods such as cluster analysis, indicator species analysis, multiple discriminant analysis, and species composition analysis. The forests were classified mainly according to the relative abundance of Quercus mongolica. There was a total of 111 classified forests and these forests were integrated into the following nine forest cover types using the percentage similarity index and by clustering according to vegetation type: 1) Mongolian oak, 2) Mongolian oak and other deciduous, 3) Oaks (Mixed Quercus spp.), 4) Korean red pine, 5) Korean red pine and oaks, 6) ash, 7) mixed mesophytic, 8) subalpine zone coniferous, and 9) miscellaneous forest. Forests grouped within the subalpine zone coniferous and miscellaneous classifications were characterized by similar environmental conditions and those forests that did not fit in any other category, respectively.

  • Convergence science research is activated, and digital humanities research is also encouraged in humanities. Therefore, this study attempted to propose a experimental study that applies Text mining and Entitymetrics methods to historical materials. Annals of King Seonjo, revised Annals of King Seonjo, Miscellaneous Record of the War and Writings on Imjin War were used, also network analysis and DMR topic models were used to explore topic changes and common entities in historical sources. Through the results, it was possible to propose the availability of quantitative analysis for text data, presenting a timing change of a specific topic, and an undiscovered relationship between person entities.

Changes in volatile compounds in rice-based distilled soju aged in different types of containers (숙성기간과 저장용기를 달리한 쌀 증류식 소주의 휘발성 향기성분 변화)

  • In this study, volatile compounds in 13 aged and 3 commercial rice-distilled soju samples were isolated by headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 85 volatile components including 35 esters, 15 alcohols, 5 ketones, 3 aldehydes, 15 miscellaneous, and 14 unknowns were identified. Esters and alcohols were the largest groups among the quantified volatiles. Differences in volatile compounds among the distilled soju samples and possible sample groupings were examined by principal component analysis of the GC-MS datasets. The first and second principal components (PC1 and PC2, respectively) explained 51.94% of the total variation across the 16 samples. The samples aged in oak containers had higher concentrations of ketones, aldehydes, and miscellaneous compounds. In the positive direction of PC1, oak-aged samples were observed, while, pot-aged samples were observed on the far negative side. Furthermore, samples aged for longer periods, such as 18 months, were observed in the positive direction of PC2.

  • This dissertation is a study on the dietary culture of Yuan Dynasty in China and that of Koryo Dynasty in Korea. Yuan Dynasty had some professional books about its dietary culture, and gives us comparetively comprehensive knowledge of the culinary art and foods used in those days. But Koryo Dynasty had few books about its dietary culture. Therefore, we had to collect information found here and there in miscellaneous books belonging to other categories, such as history, literature, medicine, etc. and arrange them in systematic orders. Here are some conclusions of the study.

Household Expenditure patterns and Its Characteristics (가계의 소비지출유형과 특성에 관한연구)

  • This study analyzed household expenditure patterns using the 1990 Korean Consumer Expenditure Survey and identified the factors determining a household's probability to be in an expenditure pattern. The results of cluster analysis revealed five expenditure patterns: Education and Recreation-dominated; Necessities-dominated; Miscellaneous expenditure-dominated Housing dominated; and Transportation and Communication-dominated patterns. Based on the results of descriptive and Logit analyses household income household size age of household head and housing status were major factors to determine the type of househld expenditure pattern.

  • The volatile fraction of Oenanthe stolonifera DC. was extracted by a steam distillation under the atmospheric pressure and analyzed by gas chromatography(GC) and gas chromatogra-phy/mass spectrometry(Gc-MS) The experimental results revealed the presence of 63 volatile components. Among them 39 components identified were composed of 20 hydrocarbonss(61.94%) 9 alcohols(8.76%) 3 ketones(11.5%) 1 ester(1.34%) 1 aldehyde (2.29%) and 5 miscellaneous \ulcorner92.35%) The major volatile components of Oenanthe stolonifera DC. were limo-nene(12.12%) pulegone(94.8%) germacrene D(8.34%) and $\beta$-pinene(7.68%)

The Review of Misdiagnosis in Surgical Chest Diseases (진단 곤란했던 흉부질환에 대한 검토)

  • The author reviewed 36 cases of misdiagnosis in 533 cases of Surgical chest diseases which were operated during past 5 years in Department of Thoracic Surgery in Busan University Hospital. The detail of cases are as follows; 11 of 162 cases in pulmonary tuberculosis, 5 of 133 cases in empyema, 3 of 29 cases of mediastinal tumor and 7 of 155 cases of miscellaneous. rate of misdiagnosis in all cases was 6.5%. The author further discussed the factor of misdiagnosis in these cases and some diseases which were needed differential diagnosis.

  • We introduce a code called tlc_s05, to fit sparsely sampled JHK band Cepheid light curve data with template light curves to derive the mean magnitude. A brief description of the code is provided here. We tested the performance of the code in deriving the mean JHK band magnitudes using simulations, and we found that it is better to observe more than four evenly spaced data points per light curve, which permits tlc_s05 to derive accurate mean magnitudes for Cepheid JHK band light curves.
