  • Four kinds of mirror substrates with same surface roughness were fabricated. On those substrates, a dielectric multi-layer coating with high reflectivity was deposited by ion beam sputtering technique. Most of the fused silica mirrors showed lower scattering than the ZERODUR mirrors one, which deposited on substrates similar in surface roughness. The ZERODUR mirrors scattering strongly depend on the micro-structure of $Ta_2O_5/SiO_2$ thin films wear deposited on ZERODUR substrates.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the summary of trouble shooting result on the dendrite defect of SSM(Second Surface Mirror) which is one of major thermal control elements for satellite. Through this failure analysis on SSM dendrite, it is found that the dendrite defect may happen to silver coated layer of SSM if SSM is directly exposed to the environment containing sulfur or chlorine compound. As a preventive action, it is required that SSM shall not contact directly with rubber pad containing sulfur compound.

  • In this paper, the structural-thermal-optical performance analysis of the mirror was performed by setting the laser heat source as the boundary condition of the thermal analysis. For the laser heat source model, the Beer-Lambert model considering semi-transparent optical material based on Gaussian beam was selected as the boundary condition, and the mechanical part was not considered, to analyze the performance of only the mirror. As a result of the thermal analysis, thermal stress and thermal deformation data due to temperature change on the surface of the mirror were obtained. The displacement data of the surface due to thermal deformation was fitted to a Zernike polynomial to calculate the optical performance, through which the performance of the mirror when a high-energy laser was incident on the mirror could be predicted.

  • Since well-calibrated satellite data is critical for their applications, calibration and validation of COMS science data was one of the key activities during the IOT. COMS MI radiometric calibration process was divided into two phases according to the out-gassing of the sensor: calibrations of the visible (VI) and infrared (IR) channels. Different from the VIS calibration, the calibration steps for the IR channels followed additional processes to secure their radiometric performances. Primary calibration steps of the IR were scan mirror emissivity correction, midnight effect compensation, slope averaging and 1/f noise compensation after a nominal calibration. First, the scan mirror emissivity correction was conducted to compensate the variability of the scan mirror emissivity driven by the coating material on the scan mirror. Second, the midnight effect correction was performed to remove unreasonable high spikes of the slope values caused by the excessive radiative sources during the local midnight. After these steps, the residual (difference between the previous slope and the given slope) was filtered by a smoothing routine to eliminate the remnant random noises. The 1/f noise compensation was also carried out to filter out the lower frequency noises caused from the electronics in the Imager. With through calibration processes during the entire IOT period, the calibrated IR data showed excellent performances.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method to predict a mirror's surface deformation due to the stress of moisture release by a coating in the environment of outer space. We measured the surface deformation of circular samples 50 mm in diameter and 1.03 mm thick, using an interferometer. The results were analyzed using Zernike fringe polynomials. The coating stress caused by moisture release was calculated to be 152.7 MPa. This value was applied to an analytic model of a 1.25 mm thickness sample mirror, confirming that the change of surface deformation could be predicted within the standard deviation of the measurement result ($78.9{\pm}5.9nm$). Using this methodology, we predicted the surface deformation of 600 mm hyperbolic mirror for the Compact Advanced Satellite, which will be launched in 2019. The result is only $2.005{\mu}m$ of focal shift, leading to 2.3% degradation of modulation transfer function (MTF) at the Nyquist frequency, which satisfies the requirement.

  • For the improvement of the lock-in frequency of a ring laser gyro, a low-scattering mirror was employed in the laser resonator. A super-polishing technique produced fine mirror substrates of less than 1-A-rms-roughness. The mirror coating using an ionbeam sputtering technique reduced the scattering loss to less than 30 ppm. As a result of the mirror scattering enhancement of the ring laser, the lock-in frequency of the gyro was improved up to about 0.1 deg/sec.

  • The Diamond-Like-Carbon (DLC) coating is a new carbon-based amorphous material. Carbon ions in the plasma are electrically accelerated and collide with the substrate to form a thin film. This film has similar properties to diamonds such as high surface hardness, low coefficient of friction, corrosion resistance and durability that do not react with acids and bases. Also, since there is no thermal deformation, it can be printed at room temperature. and coated on almost all materials such as paper, polymer, ceramics and various metals even aspheric lens it is possible to mirror surface coating with excellent surface roughness. In this paper, we have analyzed the DLC film formed by Filtered Arc Ion Plating (Filtered AIP) process.

  • We present a simulation method to design antireflection coating (ARCs) for fiber-coupled superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors. Using a finite-element method, the absorptance of the nanowire is calculated for a defined unit-cell structure consisting of a fiber, ARC layer, nanowire absorber, distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) mirror, and air gap. We develop a method to evaluate the uncertainty in absorptance due to the uncontrollable parameter of air-gap distance. The validity of the simulation method is tested by comparison to an experimental realization for a case of single-layer ARC, which results in good agreement. We show finally a double-layer ARC design optimized for a system detection efficiency of higher than 95%, with a reduced uncertainty due to the air-gap distance.

  • A silicon Fabry-Perot tunable thermo-optic filter for WDM using the thin film silicon coating is proposed and experimented. The filter is implemented by using the CMP process and polishing both sides of the commercial silicon wafer with normal thickness of 100${\mu}m{\pm}$1%. The filter also has 2-layer or 3-layer dielectrics thin film coating mirror which are alternated ${\lambda}$/4 layers of $SiO_2$($n_{low}$=1.44) and a-Si($n_{high}$=3.48) for the central wavelength of 1550nm by RF sputtering. The experiment shows that FSR is 3.61nm and FWHM is 0.56nm and the finesse is 6.4 for 2-layer mirror with the reflection of 61%, and that FSR is 3.36nm and FWHM is 0.13nm and the finesse is 25.5 for 3-layer mirror with the reflection of 89%. According to thermo-optic effect, the transmitted central wavelength of 1549.73nm at $23^{\circ}C$ is shifted to 1550.91nm at $30^{\circ}C$ and 1553.46nm at $60^{\circ}C$ for 2-layer mirror, and the transmitted central wavelength of 1549.83nm at $23^{\circ}C$ is shifted to 1550.92nm at $30^{\circ}C$ and 1553.07nm at $60^{\circ}C$ for 3-layer mirror.

  • The tongue diagnosis is a diagnostic method in the oriental medicine that uses shape, substance, coating, and movement of the tongue to determine the condition of health and disease characteristics in human. Since this information, however, could be affected by subjective sense and visual information, it is difficult to obtain the objective and reproducible results. This research aims at building a reproducible tongue diagnosis system using color chart that is attached close to the face contact region. The picture of color chart is taken simultaneously with a tongue and applied to color revision. The system, in addition, is focused on providing a clear tongue image through securing a sufficient photographing distance with a surface coating mirror. The lightning part which can suppress the reflection by sputum in maximum is implemented for the objectification and quantification of the tongue diagnosis system. The face contact region is designed for consideration of a testee's convenience. To evaluate the reproducibility of the system, the CVs (coefficient of variance, %) of $L{\ast}$, $a{\ast}$ and $b{\ast}$ of red, green and blue regions in color chart are calculated, respectively. The results of all CVs shows that the tongue diagnosis system is re liable and those consequences contribute to the objectification and quantification of the tongue diagnosis system.
