  • This study has been carried out to evaluate the leaching behavior of Tunisian phosphogypsum (PG) tailings in Skhira city (southern Tunisia). Two PG samples, including old and freshly deposited samples, were characterized in terms of physical, geotechnical, mechanical, chemical and mineralogical properties. Special attention was paid to their leaching behavior when subjected to standard leaching tests. Our results indicated that both samples are mainly composed of more than 31.85% CaO and 31.4% SO3, indicating the predominance of gypsum. This was further confirmed by XRD patterns that revealed the presence of characteristic reflections of gypsum, brushite, quartz and Maladrite. Compressive strength after 90 d exceeded 769 kPa, but still lower than that of natural sand (1,800 kPa). Leaching test was proposed as an appropriate method to determine the released contaminants from PG. The obtained results showed that Fluorine and Phosphorus are the most released elements from PG with 40 and 30%, respectively. The released Se, Cd, and Zn were the only trace elements that exceeded the threshold limits. It seemed that leached element concentrations were independent aging or particle size of the PG. Based on the assessment of leaching behavior, an integrated management approach of the PG deposits was proposed.

  • In this study, zeolite (Z-C2) was synthesized using a fusion/hydrothermal method on coal fly ash (FA) discharged from a thermal power plant in the Ulsan area and then analyzed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The Z-C2 was characterized in terms of mineralogical composition and morphological analysis. The XRD results showed that its peaks had the characteristics of Na-A zeolite in the range of $2{\theta}$ of 7.18~34.18. The SEM images confirmed that the Na-A zeolite crystals had a chamfered-edge crystal structure almost identical to that of the commercial zeolite. The adsorption kinetics of Cu, Co, Mn and Zn ions by Z-C2 were described better by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model more than by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The Langmuir model fitted the adsorption isotherm data better than the Freundlich model did. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cu, Co, Mn and Zn ions obtained from the Langmuir model were in the following order : Cu (94.7 mg/g) > Co (77.7 mg/g) > Mn (57.6 mg/g) > Zn (51.1 mg/g). These adsorption capacities are regarded as excellent compared to those of commercial zeolite.

  • The water sludge is generated from the treatment of water with alum. Disposing of sludge again to the streams raises the concentrations of aluminum oxides in water, which has been linked to Alzheimer's disease. The use of water treatment plant (WTP) sludge in manufacturing of constructional elements achieves both the economical and environmental benefits. Due to the similar mineralogical composition of clay and WTP sludge, this study investigated the complete substitution of brick clay by sludge incorporated with some of the agricultural and industrial wastes, such as rice husk ash (RHA) and silica fume (SF). Three different series of sludge to SF to RHA proportions by weight were tried, which were (25: 50: 25%), (50: 25: 25%), and (25: 25: 50%), respectively. Each brick series was fired at 900, 1000, 1100, and $1200^{\circ}C$. The physical and mechanical properties of the produced bricks were then determined and evaluated according to Egyptian Standard Specifications (E.S.S.) and compared to control clay-brick. From the obtained results, it was concluded that by operating at the temperature commonly practiced in the brick kiln, a mixture consists of 50% of sludge, 25% of SF, and 25% of RHA was the optimum materials proportions to produce brick from water sludge incorporated with SF and RHA. The produced bricks properties were obviously superior to the 100% clay control-brick and to those available in the Egyptian market.

  • To address physicochemical factors of yellow clay for removing Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms, the correlation of removal efficiency with mineralogical characteristics of yellow clay collected from various areas was surveyed. Yellow clay from different localities showed the wide range of chemical compositions $SiO_2$ : 43~71%, $Al_2O_3$ : 13~26%, $Fe_2O_3$ : 5~14%, MgO : 0.4~1.8%, $K_2O$ : 0.6~3.3%, L.O.I.(Loss of Ignition) : 4.5~15%. The mineral compositions of yellow clay were mainly consisted of quartz and feldspar including small amounts of kaolinite, chlorite, and Fe-oxides. The result of size analysis showed that $6{\Phi}(31{\sim}16{\mu}m)$ and $7{\Phi}(16{\sim}8{\mu}m)$ were dominated sizes. The zeta-potential were in the range of -4.1~-20.7mV(average -13.7). As increasing removal efficiency of C. polykrikoides, contents of $Al_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3$ and L.O.I. in yellow clay increased, whereas $SiO_2$ content decreased. Furthermore, the amounts of silt mineral and small particle were high when the removal efficiency was high. According to factor analysis using principle component analysis, two components of factor 1 and factor 2 showed 79% of the total variance, which is related to cohesion and adsorption. Inducing cell lysis of C. polykrikoides by cohension and adsorption between C. polykrikoides and yellow clay.

  • Samples (two granites, marble, sandstone) were heated in an electric furnace at temperature $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ in order to investigate the change of physical properties of rocks depending on the heating temperature. Changes of Color and physical properties such as specify gravity, porosity, absorption, p-wave velocity are visible while mineralogical changes by using polarizing microscope are not pronounced. In addition, porosity and absorption increased while specific gravity and p-wave velocity decreased at a more higher temperature ($600^{\circ}C$). Although the open porosity does not indicate total porosity of the rock. but p-wave velocity can be used to evaluate the degree of damage Therefore, porosity and p-wave velocity should be compared in order to investigate the change of physical properties of rocks depending on the heating temperature.

  • In this present work, the froth flotation of lithium ore from Boam mine located in Wooljin, Kyungbuk has been carried out to produce high-grade lithium concentrate. The sample ore-Lepidolite mainly contained silicate mineral (quartz, muscovite) and calcite. In consequences of the experiment, it has been possible to obtain relatively high-grade lithium while using anionic acid (oleic acid) to remove calcite before the froth flotation for lithium concentrate. Among the amines collectors (Armac-T, Armac-C, Armafloat-18, Armafloat-1597), Armac-T has been relatively effective than another ones. Under the optimum condition (collector : Armac-T 100g/t, frother : AF65 50g/t, depressants : $Na_2SiO_3$ 600g/t and Lactic acid 100g/t, pulp density : 20%, pH 5.5, number of cleaning : 2), it has been obtained relatively high-grade lithium concentrate ($Li_2O$) with recovery of 80.3% and with grade of 4.33%.

  • Some basic properties of inorganic coatings hardened by the room temperature reaction with alkalies were examined. The coating paste was prepared from the powders in the system $Al_2O_3-SiO_2$-CaO using blast furnace slag, fly ash and amorphous ceramic fiber after mixing with a solution of sodium hydroxide and water glass. The mineralogical and morphological examinations were performed for the coatings prepared at room temperature and after heating to $1200^{\circ}C$ respectively. The binding force of the coating hardened at room temperature was caused by the formation of fairly dense matrix mainly composed of oyelite-containing amorphous phase formed by the reaction between blast furnace slag and alkali solution. At the temperature, fly ash and ceramic fiber was not reacted but imbedded in the binding phase, giving the fluidity to the paste and reinforcing the coating respectively. During heating up to $1200^{\circ}C$, instead of a break in the coating, anorthite and gehlenite was crystallized out by the reaction among the binding phase and unreacted components in ternary system. The crystallization of these minerals revealed to be a reason that the coating maintains dense morphology after heating. The maintenance of binding force after heat treatment is seemed to be also caused by the formation of welldispersed fiber-like mineral phase which is originated from the shape of the amorphous ceramic fiber used as a raw materials.

  • Paleosol layers lying on top of the terrace in Jeongdongjin area appear to have been deposited under generally well-drained condition with periodic waterlogging. From a 4.5m-long profile observed, a total of 6 stratigraphic units were identified. Grain-size analysis indicates the dominance of silty and clay materials with some portions with high sand content. Major mineralogical elements are quartz, feldspar, mica and chlorite. Geo-chemical composition shows little change throughout the stratigraphy with some fluctuation in chemical weathering index. Marked increase in magnetic susceptibility is recognizable where stratigraphic unit changes. Soil- wedge layer is developed around 50cm below the surface with concentration of grains of AT tephra (c. 25,000 BP). An OSL date of c. 110,000 BP was obtained from a sand layer lying below the paleosol.
