  • This paper describes the design of size-reduced directional coupler using the artificial dielectric substrate and its increased effective permittivity. Directional couplers are widely used in measuring RF power indirectly and coupling signal power. Artificial dielectric substrates have higher effective dielectric constant than standard dielectric substrate due to the lots of metalized via-holes, and the increased effective permittivity results in size-reduction of circuits. As a design example, 15dB directional couplers are designed on the standard substrate and artificial dielectric substrate and their size are compared. The size of the directional coupler using the artificial dielectric substrate is only 1/3 of that designed using the standard substrate, while the performances are preserved. In addition, the measured performances of the size-reduced coupler are well agreed with the simulated ones. The measured coupling coefficient, matching, and insertion loss at 2GHz are -14.62dB, -24.1dB, and -0.38dB, respectively.

  • In this paper, bandwidth improvement of a series-fed two dipole array(STDA) antenna applicable for mobile communication base station antennas is studied. The proposed STDA antenna consists of two strip dipole antennas with different lengths which are connected directly trough a coplanar stripline(CPS). By adjusting the spacing between the two dipoles and the length of the second dipole, the bandwidth of the STDA can be enhanced. In addition, an integrated balun composed of a short-circuited microstrip line and a slot line is utilized to minimize the area required for a feeding part, and a broadband impedance matching is obtained by adjusting the feeding point. Based on the proposed antenna structure, an STDA antenna covering the frequency band ranging from 1.75 GHz to 2.7 GHz, which includes almost all the existing mobile communication frequency bands, with more than 5 dBi gain is designed and fabricated on an FR4 substrate with dielectric constant of 4.4 and thickness of 1.6mm, and experimentally tested. The fabricated antenna shows impedance bandwidth of 49%(1.7-2.8 GHz) for VSWR<2, a gain higher than 5.5 dBi, and a front-back ratio better than 12 dB.

An antenna structure in which bent strips for generating multiple resonance are attached in the form of branches was newly proposed based on a typical monopole strip vertically erected as a triple band antenna structure. The proposed antenna is designed on a FR-4 substrate with dielectric constant 4.3, thickness of 1.6 mm, and size of 28×40 mm2. The measured impedance bandwidth is 430 MHz (2.22~2.65 GHz) in the 2.4 GHz WLAN, 450 MHz (3.38~3.83 GHz) in the 3.5 GHz and 2390 MHz (4.95~7.34 GHz), In particular, it has been observed that antenna has a stable omnidirectional radiation patterns as well as gain of 1.537 dBi, 1.878 dBi and 2.337 dBi in the entire frequency band of interest.

  • For X-band phased array systems, a power amplifier, a 6-bit phase shifter, a 6-bit digital attenuator, and a SPDT transmit/receive (T/R) switch are fabricated and measured. All circuits are demonstrated by using CMOS 0.18 um technology. The power amplifier has 2-stage differential and cascade structures. It provides 1-dB gain-compressed output power ($P_{1dB}$) of 20 dBm and power-added-efficiency (PAE) of 19 % at 8-11 GHz frequencies. The 6-bit phase shifter utilizes embedded switched filter structure which consists of nMOS transistors as a switch and meandered microstrip lines for desired inductances. It has $360^{\circ}$ phase-control range and $5.6^{\circ}$ phase resolution. At 8-11 GHz frequencies, it has RMS phase and amplitude errors are below $5^{\circ}$ and 0.8 dB, and insertion loss of $-15.7\;{\pm}\;1,1\;dB$. The 6-bit digital attenuator is comprised of embedded switched Pi-and T-type attenuators resistive networks and nMOS switches and employes compensation circuits for low insertion phase variation. It has max. attenuation of 31.5 dB and 0.5 dB amplitude resolution. Its RMS amplitude and phase errors are below 0.4 dB and $2^{\circ}$ at 8-11 GHz frequencies, and insertion loss is $-10.5\;{\pm}\;0.8\;dB$. The SPDT T/R switch has series and shunt transistor pairs on transmit and receive path, and only one inductance to reduce chip area. It shows insertion loss of -1.5 dB, return loss below -15 dB, and isolation about -30 dB. The fabricated chip areas are $1.28\;mm^2$, $1.9mm^2$, $0.34\;mm^2$, $0.02mm^2$, respectively.

  • In this paper, two types of wideband 3-dB ring hybrids are compared and discussed to show the ring hybrid with a set of coupled-line sections better. However, the better one still has a realization problem that perfect matching can be achieved only with -3 dB coupling power. To solve the problem, a set of coupled-line sections with two shorts is synthesized using one- and two-port equivalent circuits and design equations are derived to have perfect matching, regardless of the coupling power. Based on the design equations, a modified ${\Pi}-type$ of transmission-line equivalent circuit is newly suggested. It consists of coupled-line sections with two shorts and two open stubs and can be used to reduce a transmission-line section, especially when its electrical length is greater than ${\pi}$. Therefore, the $3\;{\lambda}/4$ transmission-line section of a conventional ring hybrid can be reduced to less than ${\pi}/2$. To verify the modified ${\Pi}-type$ of transmission- line equivalent circuit, two kinds of simulations are carried out; one is fixing the electrical length of the coupled-line sections and the other fixing its coupling coefficient. The simulation results show that the bandwidths of resulting small transmission lines are strongly dependent on the coupling power. Using modified and conventional ${\Pi}-types$ of transmission-line equivalent circuits, a small ring hybrid is built and named a compact wideband coupled-line ring hybrid, due to the fact that a set of coupled-line sections is included. One of compact ring hybrids is compared with a conventional ring hybrid and the compared results demonstrate that the bandwidth of a proposed compact ring hybrid is much wider, in spite of being more than three times smaller in size. To test the compact ring hybrids, a microstrip compact ring hybrid, whose total transmission-line length is $220^{\circ}$, is fabricated and measured. The measured power divisions($S_{21}$, $S_{41}$, $S_{23}$ and $S_{43}$) are -2.78 dB, -3.34 dB, -2.8 dB and -3.2 dB, respectively at a design center frequency of 2 GHz, matching and isolation less than -20 dB in more than 20 % fractional bandwidth.

  • In this paper, by applying LTCC substrate, the library of the passive elements is implemented. And it can be used in 24 GHz circuits. Depending on how to use it to the circuit, it is required large value by designing the basic structures such as electrode capacitor and spiral inductor. However they are not available in high-frequency domain, because their SRF(Self-Resonant Frequency) is lower than the frequency of 24-GHz. By solving the limit, this paper devised passive elements classified for the DC and the high-frequency domain. The basic structure is suitable for low frequency under 1~2 GHz like DC. The microstrip λ/8 length stub structure is proposed to use for high-frequency like 24-GHz. The open and short stub structure operate as a capacitor and inductor respectively, also they have their impedances. Through their impedances, we can extract the value with the impedance-related equation. In this paper, the proposed passive elements are produced with the permittivity 7.5 LTCC substrate, the basic structure which are available in the DC constituted a library of capacitance of 2.35 to 30.44 pF and inductance of 0.75 to 5.45 nH, measured respectively. The stub structure available in the high-frequency domain were built libraries of capacitance of 0.44 to 2.89 pF and inductance of 0.71 to 1.56 nH, calculated respectively. The measurements have proven how to diversify value, so libraries can be built more variously. It will be an alternative to the passive elements that it is possible to integrate with the operation circuit of radar module for the frequency 24-GHz.

  • In this paper, by applying LCP substrate, the capacitor and inductor are implemented with a variety of value that can be used in 35 GHz circuits. Depending on how to apply it to the circuit, it is required high value by designing the basic structures such as electrode capacitor and spiral inductor. However they are not available in high-frequency domain, because their SRF(Self-Resonant Frequency) is lower than the frequency of 35-GHz. By finding the limit, this paper devised classifying passive devices for the DC and the high-frequency domain. The basic structure is suitable for DC and microstrip λ/8 length stub structure can be used for high-frequency. The open and short stub structure operate as a capacitor and inductor respectively in the frequency of 35 GHz. If their impedance is known, it is possible to extract the value through the impedance-related equation. By producing with the permittivity 2.9 LCP substrate, the basic structure which are available in the DC constituted a library of capacitance of 1.12 to 13.9 pF and inductance of 0.96 to 4.69 nH, measured respectively. The stub structure available in the high-frequency domain were built libraries of capacitance of 0.07 to 2.88 pF and inductance of 0.34 to 1.27 nH, calculated respectively. The measurements have proven how to diversify value, so libraries can be built more variously. It is possible to integrate with the operation circuit of TRM(Transmit-Receive Module) for the frequency 35-GHz, it will be an alternative to the passive devices that can be properly utilized in the circuit.
