  • Using laser ablation technique carbon thin films were deposited on Si(100) substrate as a function of substrate temperature. In this study, the surface morphologic, structural and field emission properties of these carbon thin films were investigated using Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and a diode technique, respectively. With increasing of the substrate temperature, the surface morphologies were changed significantly. Moreover, the intensity of D-band and the full width at half maximum of these bands were dependent on substrate temperatures. As the substrate temperature was increased, the field emission properties were improved. As the result, we find that the field emission properties of the films were changed significantly with the substrate temperature and structural features of carbon than films.

  • The study of mechanical properties and fracture behaviour of carbon/carbon composites is significant to its application and development. These are dependent on microstructure and properties of reinforcing fibers and matrix, fiber/matrix interface and porosity/cracks present in the composites. In the present studies high-density carbon/carbon composites have been prepared using PAN and various pitch based carbon fibers as reinforcements and pitch as matrix with repeated densification cycles using high-pressure impregnation and carbonization technique. Scanning electron microscopy has been used to study the fracture behaviour of the highly dense composites and correlated with structure of the composites. The geometry of reinforcement and presence of unfilled voids/cracks was found to influence the path of crack propagation and thereby the strength of composites. The type of stresses (tensile or compressive) accumulated also plays an important role in fracture of composites.

  • Structure change of Quercus variabilis charcoal during the carbonization temperature was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Volume of wood sample decreased with increasing the carbonization temperature, and checks were occurred along with radial direction. SEM observation indicated that the all wood cells presented the layering structure at $250^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$. However, the cross section of cell walls at $340^{\circ}C$ and over showed an amorphous-like structure without cell wall layering.

  • In this study, thermoplastic starch (TPS), cross-linked starch (CS), and cross-linked starch modified with glycerol (CTPS) were prepared, and the mechanical properties of the compatibilized low-density polyethylene (LDPE) blends (LDPE/TPS, LDPE/CS, and LDPE/CTPS) were investigated and compared with those of uncompatibilized LDPE/TPS, LDPE/CS, and LDPE/CTPS blends. Maleic-anhydride-grafted polyethylene was used as the compatibilizer. The enhanced tensile strength and elongation at break for the compatibilized LDPE/modified starch blends are a result of the improved compatibility between LDPE and the modified starch, which was confirmed by torque measurements and scanning electron microscopy.

  • The electric part of thermal SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy) consists of high voltage generation, lens control, and image processing. Several methodologies for enhancing SEM image are addressed and those results are verified through analyses and experiments. The controller employes a DSP(Digital Signal Processing), making the system more flexible and convenient than the classical analogue based controller. In some parts based the analog circuit, there are inevitable sources of noise and image distortion. The experimental investigation is provided along with analytical proof to enhance the SEM image.

  • The genus of Biscogniauxia, well known wood degrading fungi, is a member of the Xylariales, which has woody to carbonaceous, brown to dark brown stromata. Daldinia concentrica and Biscogniauxia sp. isolated from heavily decayed hardwood, are precisely described under light microscopic and scanning electron microscopic level. Daldinia concentrica will be the first ultrastructural description in Korea. The unidentified species collected, having small size of ascospores $11.4\;15.6{\times}9.6\;12.0{\mu}m$ with full germ slit, are taxono-mically compared with similar species found in Korea.

  • The development of esophagus in fetuses between 60, 90, 120 days of gestation and neonates of Korean native goats was investigated by light, scanning electron microscopy. The results were summarized as follows; 1. The esophageal wall appeared to be differentiated into the epithelium, lamina propria, tunica muscularis and tunica adventitia at 60 days of gestation. The esophageal epithelium was stratified cuboidal at 60 days, being transformed into stratified squamous epithelium at 90 days, and completely transformed into squamous epithelium an 120 days. 2. In scanning electron microscopy, the longitudinal furrows and ridges appeared on the epithelium of the esophagus of the fetuses at 60 days of gestation. The longitudinal furrow became deeper and microplicae appeared in 90-day-old fetuses. The transverse and longitudinal folds appeared on the epithelial surface of esophagus and the esophageal epithelium started to be keratinized in the neonates.

  • The anatomical structure of fusiform ray was examined by scanning electron microscopy (and microscopic images were analysed by image analyser) to explain the differences in radial fluid uptake between the extremes in the radial treatment data, i.e. between the selected trees of QCI (Queen Charlotte Islands in Rhondda, South Wales) and SO (South Oregon in Dalby, North-East England) planted in the UK. The ray structure of these two seed origins was examined microscopically and different patterns of ray composition were observed. The most important anatomical features influencing radial permeability were the nature of fusiform ray, and the condition of the resin canals, epithelial cells and intercellular spaces in particular.

  • Amorphous carbon thin films were deposited using laser ablation technique on Si(100) substrates at different temperatures. In this study, effects of the substrate temperature on the properties of amorphous carbor, films were systematically investigated. The surface morphologic and structural properties of the films were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and raman spectroscope, respectively. With increasing of the substrate temperature, the surface morphologies were changed significantly. Moreover the intensity ratio of D-band and G-band and the full width at half maximum of these bands were dependent on substrate temperatures.

  • Combustion behavior of pulverized coal particles in a post-combustion gas reactor was investigated. Radiation emission from coal particles were analyzed by direct photograph and $CH^*$ radical chemiluminescence intensity. Coal particles were sampled during the combustion and were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cross section micrograpy technique. Two coal types(one bituminous and one subbituminous coals typically used in the Korean power plants) were tested at typical combustion environment. Gas flow conditions were controlled to represent temperature and oxygen concentration. Experimental data were discussed along with conceptual descriptions of pulverized coal combustion, where particle heat-up, release and combustion of volatiles, and char combustion were sequentially progressed.
