  • The aim of this study is to prepare biodegradable microspheres without the use of surfactants or emulsifiers for a novel sustained delivery carriers of protein drugs. A poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone)/poly(ethylene glycol)/poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (CEC) triblock copolymer was synthesized by the ring-opening of $\varepsilon$-caprolactone with dihydroxy poly (ethylene glycol) to prepare surfactant-free microspheres. When dichloromethane (DCM) or ethyl formate (EF) was used as a solvent, the formation of microspheres did not occur. Although the microspheres could be formed prior to lyophilization under certain conditions, the morphology of microspheres was not maintained during the filtration and lyophilization process. Surfactant-free microspheres were only formed when ethyl acetate (EA) was used as the organic solvent and showed good spherical micro-spheres although the surfaces appeared irregular. The content of the protein in the micro-sphere was lower than expected, probably because of the presence of water channels and pores. The protein release kinetics showed a burst release until 2 days and after that sustained release pattern was showed. Therefore, these observations indicated that the formation of microsphere without the use of surfactant is feasible, and, this the improved process, the protein is readily incorporated in the microsphere.

  • This study is to develope a phantom for MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductors Field Effect Transistors) dosimetry and compare the dosimetric properties of standard MOSFET and microMOSFET with the phantom. In this study, the developed phantom have two shape: one is the shape of semi-sphere with 10cm diameters and the other one is the flat slab of $30{\times}30cm$with 1 cm thickness. The slab phantom was used for calibration and characterization measurements of reproducibility, linearity and dose rate dependency. The semi-sphere phantom was used for angular and directional dependence on the types of MOSFETs. The measurements were conducted under $10{\times}10cm^2$ fields at 100cm SSD with 6MV photon of Clinac (21EX, Varian, USA). For calibration and reproducibility, five standard MOSFETS and microMOSFETs were repeatedly Irradiated by 200cGy five times. The average calibration factor was a range of $1.09{\pm}0.01{\sim}1.12{\pm}0.02mV/cGy$ for standard MOSFETS and $2.81{\pm}0.03{\sim}2.85{\pm}0.04 mV/cGy$ for microMOSFETs. The response of reproducibility in the two types of MOSFETS was found to be maximum 2% variation. Dose linearity was evaluated In the range of 5 to 600 cGy and showed good linear response with $R^2$ value of 0.997 and 0.999. The dose rate dependence of standard MOSFET and microMOSFET was within 1% for 200 cGy from 100 to 500MU/min. For linearity, reproducibility and calibration factor, two types of MOSFETS showed similar results. On the other hand, the standard MOSFET and microMOSFET were found to be remarkable difference in angular and directional dependence. The measured angular dependence of standard MOSFET and microMOSFET was also found to be the variation of 13%, 10% and standard deviation of ${\pm}4.4%,\;{\pm}2.1%$. The directional dependence was found to be the variation of 5%, 2% and standard deviation of ${\pm}2.1%,\;{\pm}1.5%$. Therefore, dose verification of radiation therapy used multidirectional X-ray beam treatments allows for better the use of microMOSFET which has a reduced angular and directional dependence than that of standard MOSFET.

  • A differential scheme based micromechanical framework is proposed to obtain the effective properties of the saturated concrete repaired by the electrochemical deposition method (EDM) considering the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) effects. The constituents of the repaired concrete are treated as different phases, consisting of (micro-)cracks, (micro-)voids and (micro-)pores (occupied by water), deposition products, intrinsic concrete made up by the three traditional solid phases (i.e., mortar, coarse aggregates and their interfaces) and the ITZs. By incorporating the composite sphere assemblage (CSA) model and the differential approach, a new multilevel homogenization scheme is utilized to quantitatively estimate the mechanical performance of the repaired concrete with the ITZs. The CSA model is modified to obtain the effective properties of the equivalent particle, which is a three-phase composite made up of the water, deposition products and the ITZs. The differential scheme is employed to reach the equivalent composite of the concrete repaired by EDM considering the ITZ effects. Moreover, modification procedures considering the ITZ effects are presented to attain the properties of the repaired concrete in the dry state. Results in this study are compared with those of the existing models and the experimental data. It is found that the predictions herein agree better with the experimental data than the previous models.

  • Diamonds have been widely employed as polishing media for precise machining and noble substrates for microelectronics. The recent development of the split sphere press has led to the enhancement of low quality natural diamonds. Synthesized and treated diamonds are sometimes traded deceptively as high quality natural diamonds because it is hard to distinguish among these diamonds with conventional gemological characterization method. Therefore, we need to develop a new identification method that is cheap, fast, and non-destructive. We proposed using a new method of micro-Raman spectroscopy for checking the local HPHT residual stress to distinguish these diamonds from natural ones. We observe unique ~10f compressive and tensile strains at Type I and Type II diamonds after HPHT treatment. Our result implies that our proposed methods may be appropriate fur identification of the treated diamonds with appropriate reference samples.

  • Condensation control of nano-particles has become important in order to fabricate minute condensed structures. In this study, we focus our attention on condensation mechanism of polymer aggregates in a resist film. The polymer aggregate is structural component of a resist material which is used in lithography process. The condensation nature of polymer aggregates in the resist film surface is observed by using atomic force microscope (AFM). By using the AFM, the condensation of polymer aggregates can be observed clearly. The condensation of polymer aggregate strongly affects to precise fabrication of resist pattern below 100nm size. The interaction force among polymer aggregates can be analyzed based on Derjaguin approximation. We also discuss about condensation nature of polymer aggregates in the resist film surface with the help of micro sphere model.

  • In linac-based stereotactic radiosurgery, assuring the quality of the planning and delivery of external photon beam requires accurate evaluation of beam parameters, usually including output factors, tissue-phantom ratio and off-axis ratios, and measurement of actual dose distributions from simulated treatment. We're going to test the use of calibrated radio chromic film (Gafchromic film; type MD-55, Nuclear associate) using a Lumiscan 75 digitizer to measure absolute dose and relative dose distributions for linac-based radiosurgery unit Relative dose distribution of a human-style spherical acryl phantom were measured using radiochromic film and calculated by treatment planning system. The absolute dose at the sphere center was measured by radiochromic film and micro chamber (Exradin A-14, 0.009cc). What we want to demonstrate in this work, the 'well selected' radiochromic films when external photon beam are used in linac-based stereotactic radiosurgery are very accurate detector for dosimetry.

  • Numerical simulation for the axisymmetric body with contractive and dilative periodic motion is carried out. The present analysis shows that a propulsive force can be obtained in highly viscous fluid by the contractive and dilative motion of axisymmetric body. An axisymmetric code is developed with unstructured grid system for the simulation of complicated motion and geometry. It is validated by comparing with the results of Stokes approximation with the problem of uniform flow past a sphere in low Reynolds number($R_n$ = 1). The validated code is applied to the simulation of contractive and dilative periodic motion of body whose results are quantitatively compared with the two dimensional case. The simulation is extended to the analysis of waving surface with projecting part for finding out the difference of hydrodynamics performance according to variation of waving surface configuration. The present study will be the basic research for the development of the propulsor of an axisymmetric micro-hydro-machine.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand modernization process of korean housing during the past one century. To following up the changes of everyday lives of common peoples, magazines, news papers, tourist's records and gossip items were collected and interpreted from the microscopic point of view. In this study arguments on 'modernity' of korean housing was focused on some issues, thus, separation, differentiation, individualization, as well as privatization. Concrete discourses are; firstly, spatial isolation of housing and urban place each other, secondly, functional division of inner spaces of housing, and lastly, guarantee of privacy sphere. Historical changes of housing showed some meaningful phenomena. Before modernization housing was place of reproduction and consume at the same time. However after modern urban space came into existence and work and rest were separated, housing gained only mono function. Thus, housing have only one meaning as private place for nuclear family, that is "Home, Sweet Home." Instead of past multi-functional rooms, functional prescribed rooms, for example, dinning room, were newly born. In the past, the boundary between public and private sphere was not clear. For examples, everyday experiences of family were extended to the street and in the house in most cases spaces were shared. But after modernization the scale of individual spaces become larger and private life can be secured. Consequently, history of everyday life from traditional agricultural society to industrialized modern society demonstrates the structural context between the micro and macro dimension in the fields of human life. In other words, everyday lives and macro history response each other and create new perception of time-space structure in the modern housing.
