We introduce an x-ray micro tomography system capable of high resolution imaging of a local region inside a small animal. By combining two kinds of projection data, one from a full field-of-view (FOV) scan of the whole body and the other from a limited FOV scan of the region of interest, we have obtained zoomed-in images of the region of interest without any contrast a nomalies. We have integrated a micro tomography system using a micro-focus x-ray source, a $1248\times1248$ flat-panel x-ray detector, and a precision scan mechanism. Using the cross-sectional images taken with the zoom-in micro tomography system, we measured trabecular thicknesses of femur bones in postmortem rats. To compensate the limited spatial resolution in the zoom-in micro tomography images, we used the fuzzy distance transform for the calculation of the trabecular thickness. To validate the trabecular thickness measurement with the zoom-in micro tomography images, we compared the measurement results with the ones obtained from the conventional micro tomography images of the extracted bone samples.
This paper introduces a system to machine micro-sized patterns effectively on surface based on micro-milling process using tools with simultaneous rotation and oscillation, oscillation micro milling. To review the effectiveness of proposed concept, we integrated a micro-spindle supported by active magnetic bearings with a precision 3-axis air bearing stage using double-wedge mechanism, and tested this oscillation milling. Two types of oscillation milling were tested, which are linear oscillation milling with a flat end mill and elliptical oscillation milling with a ball end mill with 0.3 mm of diameter. The spindle was rotating 110 krpm and workpiece was moving constant speed of 2~8 mm/sec during the oscillation milling. As the results, multiple oval shape dimples were generated in regular spacing, and the variation of elliptical motion made different shapes of patterns. The results showed that proposed oscillation milling can be successfully used for machining repeated micro-patterns.
Recently, the need for transporting and manipulating minute amount of fluids in microscale channels (so-called micro-fluidics) has been increasing, especially in biotechnology and biochemical processing. This work demonstrates that the so-called mechano-chemical process which consists of mechanical abrasive action combined with chemical process can be used to f뮤ricate micro-fluidic channels more rapidly and cost effectively than other methods. In this work, capillary filling of fluids in micro-channels was investigated by theoretical approaches and experiments. From the experimental results, it is expected that a complex micro-fluidic system can be fabricated using the micro-fabrication technique and microsystem packaging method described in this work.
As it is difficult to construct a micro-fluidic system composed of micro-mixers, micro-channels and/or micro-chambers in a single process, an assembly process is typically used. The assembling and bonding of micro-parts, however, introduces other problems. In this work, a virtual assembly process was developed that can be used to design various micro-systems before actual fabrication commences. In the process, the information required for the micro-stereolithography process is generated automatically. Consequently, complex micro-fluidic systems can be fabricated in a single process, thereby avoiding the need fur additional assembly or bonding processes. Using the developed process, several examples were fabricated.
In the machining process of micros shape by using high-precision machining system and micro end-mill, it is important for machining characters of tools to be grasped in order to stably use tools of micro end-mill. In this study. we carried out an analytical experiment of basic machining features by using end-mill tools for the purpose of damage prevention and manufacture of high quality when the tools of micro end-mill are used. This experiment used a micro machining system with high precision and a variety of end-mill tools commercialized from tens to hundreds microns in diameter. To establish an optimal machining condition without tool damage, cutting force was analyzed according to the changes of tool diameter and cutting conditions such as cutting speed. feed rate, depth of cut. And an examination was performed for the shape and surface illumination of machining surface according to the changes of machining conditions. Based on these micro machining conditions, micro square pillar, cylinder shaft. thin wall with high aspect ratio, and micro 3-D structures such as micro gear and fan were manufactured.
In Micro injection process, it is needed to the technique of making micro die, Rapid Thermal Pressing (RTP) and other techniques. Those techniques are independent. But the mutual connected system of techniques is needed. The target of this paper is the design of micro mold and the development of the entire micro injection techniques for functional polymer.
Due to the high incidence of malignant melanoma, the establishment of in vitro models that recapitulate the tumor microenvironment is of great biological and clinical importance for tumor treatment and drug research. In this study, 3D printing technology was used to prepare GelMA/PEGDA composite scaffolds that mimic the microenvironment of human malignant melanoma cell (A375) growth and construct in vitro melanoma micro-models. The GelMA/PEGDA hybrid scaffold was tested by the mechanical property, cell live/dead assay, cell proliferation assay, cytoskeleton staining and drug loading assay. The growth of tumor cells in two- and three-dimensional culture systems and the anti-cancer effect of luteolin were evaluated using the live/dead staining method and the Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) method. The results showed a high aggregation of tumor cells on the 3D scaffold, which was suitable for long-term culture. Cytoskeleton staining and immunofluorescent protein staining were used to evaluate the degree of differentiation of tumor cells under 2D and 3D culture systems. The results indicated that 3D bioprinted scaffolds were more suitable for tumor cell expansion and differentiation, and the tumor cells were more aggressive. In addition, luteolin was time- and dose-dependent on tumor cells, and tumor cells in the 3D culture system were more resistant to the drug.
In this paper, we studied about the micro pressure transmission system using fluid. For the investigation of feasibility of microhydraulic system, the hydraulic characteristics were examined by using the capillary tube system and the micro cylinder system that consists of a rod and a micro capillary tube. A new hydraulic micro actuator using magnetic fluid and an external magnetic field was also investigated. The results showed that our microhydraulic system has the possibility of power transmission in arbitrary directions.
This paper contributes to development of a new chip mounting head system for flip chip. Recently, the LDM(Linear DC Motor) has been widely used, because it has particular merits than the rotary type motors. In this paper, we proposed a macro/micro positioning system for force control of a chip mounting system. In the proposed macro/micro system, the macro actuator provide the system with a gross motion while the micro device yields fine tuned motion to reduce the harmful impact force that occurs between very small sized electronic parts and PCB surface. In order to prove the effectiveness of the proposed macro/micro chip mounting system, we compared the proposed chip mounting head with the conventional chip mounting head equipped with a macro actuator only. A series of experiments were executed under the mounting conditions of various access velocities and PCB stiffness. As a result of this study, a satisfactory voice coil actuator as the micro actuator has been developed, and its performance meet well the specifications desired for the design of the chip mounting head system and show good correspondence between theoretical analysis and experimental results.
