  • Methane is the second most significant greenhouse gas contributing to global warming after carbon dioxide, exerting a substantial impact on climate change. This paper provides a comprehensive review of satellite remote sensing-based methane detection technologies used to efficiently detect and quantify methane emissions. Methane emission sources are broadly categorized into natural sources (such as permafrost and wetlands) and anthropogenic sources (such as agriculture, coal mines, oil and gas fields, and landfills). This study focuses on anthropogenic sources and examines the principles of methane detection using information from various spectral bands, including the shortwave infrared (SWIR) band, and the utilization of key satellite data supporting these technologies. Recently, deep learning techniques have been applied in methane detection research using satellite data, contributing to more accurate analyses of methane emissions. Furthermore, this paper assesses the practicality of satellite-based methane monitoring by synthesizing case studies of methane emission detection at global, regional, and major incident scales, including examples of applying deep learning techniques. At the global scale, research utilizing satellite sensors like the Sentinel-5P TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) was reviewed. At the regional scale, studies were highlighted where TROPOMI data was combined with relatively high-resolution satellite data, such as the Sentinel-2 MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI) and GHGSat Wide-Angle Fabry-Perot (WAF-P) Imaging Spectrometer, to detect methane emissions and sources. Through this comprehensive review, the current state and applicability of satellite-based methane detection technologies are evaluated.

  • We report the simple detection method of the small hydrocarbons, methane and ethane, by continuous-wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy near 1.67 ${\mu}m$ using an external cavity diode laser. The absorption lines of methane between 6002.48 $cm^{-1}$ and 6003.37 $cm^{-1}$ and ethane between 5955.65 $cm^{-1}$ and 5956.4 $cm^{-1}$ have been resolved and employed for the gas detection. The largest absorption cross sections were found to be 6.5$\times10^{-20}cm^2$ and 7.4$\times10^{-21}cm^2$ for methane and ethane, respectively, in each spectral range. The minimum detectable absorption limit of our spectrometer was 4.8${\times}10^{-9}cm^{-1}$/$\sqrt{Hz}$, which corresponds to the detection limits of 3 ppb/$\sqrt{Hz}$ and 27 ppb/$\sqrt{Hz}$ for methane and ethane, respectively. The near-IR continuous-wave cavity ring-down spectroscopic detection method of the small hydrocarbons can be applied for medical diagnosis and environmental monitoring as a fast and convenient method.

  • The mechanism of methane sensing by Pd-SiC diode was investigated over the temperature range of 400~$600^{\circ}C$. The effects or methane gas reaction on the parameters such as barrier height, initial rate of methane gas reaction are investigated. The methane gas reaction kinetics on the device are also discussed. The physical and chemical mechanism responsible for methane detection are proposed. Analysis of steady-state reaction kinetics using I-V method confirmed that methane gas reaction processes are responsible for the barrier height change in the diode.

  • A coprecipitation method was used for preparing Ca and Pt doped $SnO_2$ fine powder. Components of the powder were investigated by XPS and SIMS. Crystallite size and specific surface area were investigated by TEM, XRD, and BET analysis. $SnO_2$(Ca)/Pt based thick film devices were prepared by a screen printing technique for methane gas detection. Then sensing characteristics of the devices were investigated. As Ca and Pt added, the crystal growth of $SnO_2$ was suppressed during calcining and sintering, and the sensitivity of $SnO_2$(Ca)/Pt thick film to methane gas was enhanced. For the Pt doped $SnO_2$ fine particle, the thick film device shows sensitivity of about 83% to 2000 ppm methane gas at an operating temperature of >$400^{\circ}C$.

  • A method for the measurement of the concentration of methane is experimentally demonstrated. The wavelength filter and gas cell are combined by using one Fabry-Perot etalon, which is filmed with the reflectivity of 96%. The optical broadband source is not only filtered to match the absorption wavelength of methane, but also absorbed by the methane in the same Fabry-Perot etalon. The concentration of the methane can be detected directly by measuring the transmission intensity. Compared with the conventional method, the proposed method possesses low costand high stability.

  • In this study, we develop a methane sensor module that can detect low concentrations below 5,000 ppm and measure up to the detection limit of 50 ppm with the NDIR method, with a long lifetime and high accuracy. Methane ($CH_4$) is one of a representative greenhouse gas, which is very explosive. Thus, it is important to quickly and accurately measure methane concentration in the air. To adjust the methane sensor for industrial field applications, a NDIR-based small sensor was implemented and characterized, where its volume was $4cm{\times}4cm{\times}2cm$ and its response time ($T_{90}$) was less than 30 sec. These results demonstrate that the proposed sensor is commercially available for low-concentration measurement, low volume, and fast response application, such as IoT sensor nodes and portable devices.

  • An analytical method for the simultaneous determination of trace Ge, As and Se in biological samples by inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry has been investigated. The effects of added organic gas into the coolant argon gas on the analyte signal were studied to improve the detection limit, accuracy and precision. The addition of a small amount of methane (10 mL/min.) into the coolant gas channel improved the ionization of Ge, As and Se. The analytical sensitivity of the proposed Ar/CH₄system was superior by at least two-fold to that of the conventional Ar method. In the present method, the detection limits obtained for Ge, As and Se were 0.014, 0.012 and 0.064 ㎍/L, respectively. The analytical reliability of the proposed method was evaluated by analyzing the certified standard reference materials (SRM). Recoveries of 99.9% for Ge, 103% for As, 96.5% for Se were obtained for NIST SRM of freeze dried urine sample. The proposed method was also applied to the biological samples.

  • In order to investigate the analytical uncertainties associated with sampling and analysis of major greenhouse gaseous pollutants(carbon dioxide and methane), we attempted to quantify their adsorptive loss due to the contact with the container wall(such as Tedlar bag and vial). Using the GC/FID method, some basic experimental parameters(such as reproducibility and method detection limit) have been evaluated as part of the essential QA/QC The reproducibilities of carbon dioxide and methane were estimated as 2.02 and 0.2%, respectively. In addition, method detection limits were measured as 0.61 and 0.06 ng, respectively. A test of sample loss rate has also been made for Tedlar bag and vial by assessing the absolute amount of sample loss on the wall. By transferring the samples contained in Tedlar bag to various sizes of Tedlar bags, we measured differences in the absolute loss quantity due to such transfer. In addition, we also examined such loss mechanism as a function of elapsed time and light penetration rate for vial. As results, carbon dioxide and methane have shown about 2% of sample loss due to such contact. It is also noticed that the amount of loss with vial surface is lower than that of Tedlar bag. Therefore, field collection of greenhouse gases using various container types should be made more cautiously to minimize the possibility of sample loss and bias related to such loss.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of supplementing concentrates in a forage-based diet on methane emissions of pregnant Hanwoo heifers. Twenty-one pregnant Hanwoo heifers (481 ± 42.4 kg) were divided into two groups: 1) a group receiving forage only (control, CON) and 2) the other group receiving forage with 4 kg of a concentrate mix (treatment, TRT). Methane (CH4) concentration was measured using a laser methane detector, following an 18-d adaptation period, according to previously established protocols. Feed intake was recorded throughout the experimental period. Ruminal fluid was collected and analyzed for pH, ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N), and volatile fatty acid (VFA). The TRT exhibited higher dry matter and neutral detergent fiber intake than CON (p < 0.05) with elevated NH3-N (p < 0.001) and total VFA concentrations (p = 0.013). The proportions of butyrate, valerate, and iso-valerate were higher in TRT than CON (p < 0.05). Notably, CH4 concentrations per kg dry matter intake was lower in the TRT group, both from respiration and eructation (p < 0.05). In conclusion, supplementing concentrates in a low-quality forage-based diet for pregnant Hanwoo heifers fulfills nutrient requirements and reduces CH4 emissions, suggesting a potential strategy to reduce environmental impact of Hanwoo production.
