Monitoring system is an absolutely-required system for assessing a performance and fatigue load of the wind turbine in an on-shore wind energy experimental research complex. It was implemented for the purpose of monitoring the wind information measured from a meteorological tower at the monitoring house, and of utilizing the measured data(fatigue data and electric analyzing data of wind turbine)for the performance assessment, by using the LabVIEW program. Then, by adding the performance assessment-related data acquired from the wind turbine during the performance assessment and the data recorder for synchronizing the data of meteorological tower, the system(BusDAQ) was implemented. Because it transmitted the data by converting the output 'RS-232' of data logger which measures the wind condition into CAN protocol, the data error rate was minimized. Also, This paper is introduced to make the best use of the developed monitoring system and to explain about construct of the system and detailed data communication of its system.

In this study, seasonal variations of the dry deposition velocity and deposition flux for the sulfur dioxide were analysed. The field observation was performed during one year (from November 1, 1995 to October 31, 1996) in Chunchon basin. The turbulence data were measured by 3-dimensional sonic anemometer/thermometer, and were estimated by mean meteorological data obtained at two heights (2.5 m and 10 m) of meteorological tower. Also, the estimation methods were evaluated by comparing the turbulence data. The results showed that the estimated dry deposition velocity and turbulence parameter such as uc and sensible heat flux using mean meteorological data were relatively similar to the sonic measurements, but all showed somewhat large differences. The dry deposition velocity was large in summer and small in winter mainly due to canopy resistance (rc). The major factor which affects diurnal variation of the velocity was aerodynamic resistance (rw). The SO2 dry deposition flux was large in winter and small in summer in Chunchon.

Providing high-quality meteorological observation data at sites that represent actual farming environments is essential for useful agrometeorological services. The Automated Agricultural Observing System (AAOS) of the Korean Meteorological Administration, however, has been deployed on lawns rather than actual farm land. In this study, we show the inaccuracies that arise in AAOS data by analyzing temporal and vertical variation and by comparing them with data recorded by the National Center for AgroMeteorology (NCAM) tower that is located at an actual farming site near the AAOS tower. The analyzed data were gathered in August and October (before and after harvest time, respectively). Observed air temperature and water vapor pressure were lower at AAOS than at NCAM tower before and after harvest time. Observed reflected shortwave radiation tended to be higher at AAOS than at NCAM tower. Soil variables showed bigger differences than meteorological observation variables. In August, observed soil temperature was lower at NCAM tower than at AAOS with smaller diurnal changes due to irrigation. The soil moisture observed at NCAM tower continuously maintained its saturation state, while the one at AAOS showed a decreasing trend, following an increase after rainfall. The trend changed in October. Observed soil temperature at NCAM showed similar daily means with higher diurnal changes than at AAOS. The soil moisture observed at NCAM was continuously higher, but both AAOS and NCAM showed similar trends. The above results indicate that the data gathered at the AAOS are inaccurate, and that ground surface cover and farming activities evoke considerable differences within the respective meteorological and soil environments. We propose to shift the equipment from lawn areas to actual farming sites such as rice paddies, farms and orchards, so that the gathered data are representative of the actual agrometeorological observations.
The swell is a major cause of interruption for the activity in a port and the ship navigation in coastal waters, coastal geographical changes, and the disaster with a loss of lives. However, many researches about the observation and the prediction of swells have not been conducted actively due to the difficulties to collect and synthesize the massive amount of long term field data for waves and meteorological information. In this study, the internet-based realtime monitoring system(Fieldbox) was developed to collect the wave data. The characteristics and main components of swells occurred in Korea were analyzed using wave data observed through the Fieldbox and the meteorological data collected by the KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) and NASA(National Aeronautics and Space Administration). The characteristics of the swell generation patterns were analyzed using the monthly data of the Kwangan Tower between 2004 and 2006 to estimate the specific features such as sources and locations of swells generated in Korea.
Meteorological phenomena are observed by the Korea Meteorological Administration in a variety of ways (e.g., surface, upper-air, marine, ocean, and aviation). However, there are limits to the meteorological observation of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) that greatly affects human life. In particular, observations using a sonde or aircraft require significant observational costs in economic terms. Therefore, the goal of this study was to measure and analyze the meteorological factors of the vertical distribution of the see-land breeze among local meteorological phenomena using meteorological drones. To investigate the spatial distribution of the see-land breeze, a same integrated meteorological sensor was mounted on each drone at three different points (seaside, bottom of mountain, and mountainside), including the Boseong tall tower (BTT) at the Boseong Standard Weather Observatory (BSWO) in the Boseong region. Vertical profile observations for air temperature, relative humidity, wind direction, wind speed, and air pressure were conducted up to 400 m every 30 minutes from 1100 LST to 1800 LST on August 4, 2018. The spatial characteristics of meteorological phenomena for temperature, relative humidity, and atmospheric pressure were not shown at the four points. Strong winds (~8 m s-1) were observed from the midpoint (~100 m) at strong solar radiation hour, and in the afternoon the wind direction changed from the upper layer at the inland area to the west wind. It is expected that the analysis results of the lower atmospheric layer observed using the meteorological drone may help to improve the weather forecast more accurately.

Since 1998, several institutions have deployed mobile instrumented towers to collect research-grade meteorological data from landfalling tropical cyclones. This study examines the wind flow characteristics from seven landfalling tropical cyclones using data collected from eight individual mobile tower deployments which occurred from 1998-2005. Gust factor, turbulence intensity, and integral scale statistics are inspected relative to changing surface roughness, mean wind speed and storm-relative position. Radar data, acquired from the National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Surveillance Radar - 1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) network, are examined to explore potential relationships with respect to radar reflectivity and precipitation structure (convective versus stratiform). The results indicate tropical cyclone wind flow characteristics are strongly influenced by the surrounding surface roughness (i.e., exposure) at each observation site, but some secondary storm dependencies are also documented.

A wind turbine monitoring system is essential equipment fur the performance evaluation and mechanical load analysis of a wind turbine. A monitoring system using LabVIEW is developed in this study. This system monitors signals from a meteorological mast, wind turbine generator, and tower. The discrete signals which are sampled at t Hz are automatically saved on a data file in the unit of a day. Besides these basic functions, the developed monitoring system has the other several capabilities. One of them is the information access from a remote PC through the internet. A vision image of the test site area and data files that are produced by LabVIBW software can be uploaded to the main computer located in a remote site. An emergency backup system using UPS fur the power loss on the monitoring HW is also prepared, A detail explanation for the developed wind turbine monitoring system is presented in this study.
In the 1990s, four strong typhoons hit the Kyushu area of Japan and inflicted severe damage on power transmission facilities, houses, and so on. Maximum gust speeds exceeding 60 m/s were recorded in central Kyushu. Although the wind speeds were very high, the gust factors were over 2.0. No meteorological stations are located in mountainous areas, creating a deficiency of meteorological station data in the area where the towers were damaged. Since 1995 the authors have operated a network for wind measurement, NeWMeK, that measures wind speed and direction, covering these mountainous areas, segmenting the Kyushu area into high density arrays. Maximum gusts exceeding 70 m/s were measured at several NeWMeK sites when Typhoon Bart (1999) approached. The gust factors varied widely in southerly winds. The mean wind speeds increased due to effects of the local terrain, thus further increasing gust speeds.

Radioactive materials from nuclear power facilities can be released into the atmosphere through various channels. Recently, the dispersion of radioactive materials has become critical issue in Korea after Kori Unit 1 and Wolsong Unit 1 were permanently shut down. In this study, annual atmospheric dispersion factors were compared based on the continuous release and purge release using the XOQDOQ computer program, a method for calculating atmospheric dispersion factors at commercial nuclear power stations. The meteorological data analyzed in this study was based on the Shin Kori nuclear power meteorological tower which has the largest operating nuclear power plants in Korea, for three years (from 2008 to 2010). The analysis results of the dispersion factor of the radioactive material release obtained using the XOQDOQ program showed that the difference between the continuous release and purge release was within two times. This study will be valuable helpful for revealing the uncertainty of the predictive atmospheric dispersion factor to achieve regulation.
This paper reports the field measurements concerning pressure equalization of rainscreen facades carried out at the Technical University of Eindhoven (TUE) in the Netherlands. The field facility including the details of test panel, meteorological tower, instrumentation, data collection and analysis is presented. Results of investigations into cavity response for various leakage and venting configurations are discussed. Frequency domain techniques have been utilized to show the influence of wind as well as facade characteristics on the pressure equalization performance. Further, this paper presents an early attempt to synthesize the experimental results into existing building codes.
