Effects of Content of Reactive Aggregate on Alkali-Silica Reaction Expansion (반응성 골재의 혼입량이 모르타르의 알칼리-실리카 반응 팽창에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of content of reactive aggregate on alkali-silica reaction was investigated through the ASTM C 1260 method. The replacement proportions of fine aggregate by reactive aggregate were 25, 50, 75 and $100\%$, respectively. Reactive aggregate and fine aggregate(non-reactive aggregate) used are a metamorphic rock and andesite rock, respectively. The results indicate that the mortar-bar containing $25\%$ replacement of fine aggregate by reactive aggregate shows the lowest expansion but expansion in excess of $0.1\%$ at 16 days, which can distinguished between deleterious and potentially reactive. Although content of reactive aggregate is a small amount, it can cause detrimental expansion due to alkali-silica reaction.

  • The concrete structure can be easily damaged due to alkali-aggregate reaction. The alkali-aggregate reaction is a reaction between the alkalies(K or Na) in cement and an unstable mineral of the aggregates. There are several test methods to identify alkali reactivity of aggregates. In general, crushed stones are tested by petrographic examination, chemical method and 모르타르 바 method. This study tested alkali-aggregate reactivity of crushed stones that has different rock types such as granitic, volcanic, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Samples are collected from 12 local aggregate production companies. Alkali-reactivity of various rock types was evaluated by using ASTM C 227 and C 1260, and compared the test results of two test methods.

Source Area Investigation and Petrological Characteristics of Rock Properties from the Jeseokri Stone-Lined Tombs in Gimcheon, Korea (김천 제석리 석곽묘 석재의 암석학적 특성과 공급지 해석)

  • In this study, we investigated the source area and petrological characteristics of rock properties from the Jeseokri stone-lined tombs located in Gimcheon by analyzing its rocks and source rocks. As a result, the Jeseokri stone-lined tombs consists in a total 11 kinds of various rock types. And aplite (34.5%), leucocratic granite (26.9%) and schistose granite (24.4%) have a large percentage of the rock's composition. By examining the possible provenances, the same rock types and the stones of a similar with metamorphic grades are discovered along the Jeseok mountain valley located to the south of tombs. These findings suggest that the rock properties of the Jeseokri stone-lined tomb were supplied from the upper Jeseok mountain valley and about 1.7km away from Jeseokri. This study could be used for the archaeogeological interpretation of funeral culture and conservation data of buried cultural properties in the age.

A Study on Thermal Properties of Rocks from Gyeonggi-do Gangwon-do, Chungchung-do, Korea (경기도, 강원도, 충청도 일대의 암석 열물성 특성 연구)

  • We made 712 thermal property measurements on igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rock samples from Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do and Chungchung-do, Korea. The average thermal conductivities of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks are 3.58W/m-K, 4.16W/m-K and 4.53W/m-K, respectively. Thermal conductivity of granite and gneiss are 2.13-5.87W/m-K and 2.26-6.67W/m-K, with average values of 3.57W/m-K and 3.945W/m-K, respectively. The average of thermal diffusivities are $1.43mm^2/sec\;and\;1.55mm^2/sec$, respectively; the average of specific heat values are 0.914J/gK, 0.912J/gK for granite and gneiss samples, respectively. The thermal conductivity of a rock type generally have a wide range because it depends on various factors such as dominant mineral phase, micro-structure, anisotropy, and so on.

Geomorphic Resources of Mt. Palgong, in Daegu (대구 팔공산의 지형자원)

  • This research aimed to analyse geomorphic resources of Mt. palgong(in Daegu city and Gyeongbuk province) through some field surveys, and then to clarify geomorphic features. The main results are as follows. 1) The geological boundary of the south slope(granite) is more clear than one of the north slope(granite bedrock and metamorphic sedimentary rock). Small basins are along with fault line between granite bedrock and metamorphic sedimentary rock. 2) It is estimated that relatively big valleys on the north slope are due to local climate, geomorphic and geological features. 3) Tor, sheeting joint, gutter are well developed both on the south slope and on the north slope, however the development of polygonal cracking and boulder stream are more dominant on the south slope; river cliff, pool, waterfall are more dominant on the north slope with valleys that well developed. 4) Scenic geomorphic landscapes are mainly developed in Dongsan valley and Chisan valley on the north slope. 5) There are many interesting geomorphic resources in the viewpoint of storytelling in Mt. Palgong. So the specific design to utilize such resources is required

Metamorphism of the amphibolites in the Hwanggangri area, the northeastern region of Ogcheon metamorphic belt, Korea (옥천변성대 북동부 황강리 지역내 앰피볼라이트의 변성작용)

  • In the amphibolites of the Hwanggangri area, three metamorphic zones are established like hornblende-actinolite zone (H-AZ), hornblende zone (HZ) and diopside zone (DZ) by the main mineral assemblages. Hornblende zone and hornblende-actinolite zone develope away from the diopside zone that experienced the highest thermal effect. Thus, this pattern identifies the decreasing metamorphic grade of the contact metamorphism with increasing distance from the granitic pluton. The mineral assemblages of this rock are classified into six representative groups such as $\circled1$ actinolite+plagioclase+chlorite, $\circled2$ actinolite+hornblende+plagioclase+chlorite$\pm$epidote$\pm$biotite, $\circled3$ actinolite+hornblende+plagioclass$\pm$biotite$\pm$epidote, $\circled4$ hornblende+plagioclase$\pm$biotite$\pm$chlorite, $\circled5$ hornblende+plagioclase+diopside+actinolite$\pm$epidote$\pm$chlorite, $\circled6$hornblende+plagioclase+diopside$\pm$biotite$\pm$epidote. Two metamorphic events m recognized in the amphibolites of the study area that the first metamorphism is the regional metamorphism dominantly occurred in the whole Ogcheon metamorphic belt and it gave rise to the growth of actinolite at the core or center of the amphibole grains of coarse and medium size. Its metamorphic grade ranges from the greenschist facies to epidote-amphibolite facies. The second metamorphism overlapped is the contact metamorphism caused by the adjacent granitic pluton, and its metamorphic grade is thought to reach to the low pressure part of upper amphibolite facies. According to the calculation by TWEEQU thermobarometry and amphibole-plagioclase thermometry, the metamorphic temperature of initial regional metamorphism is $439-537^{\circ}C$ under pressure of 4.6-7.3 kb and its peak temperature and pressure are considered to reach to the range of 492-537 and 5.2-7.3 kb. And the temperature range of contact metamorphism occurred by intrusion of cretaceous granitic body, is $588-739^{\circ}C$ under pressure of 2.6-5.2 kb and its peak temperature and pressure are estimated as having the range of $697-739^{\circ}C$ and 3.8-5.2 kb that this amphibolites are estimated to pass through the metamorphic evolution of both the rise of temperature and the drop of pressure.

  • This study was carried out to know how erosion control function of forests varies as forests develop in watersheds. The erosion control function among the forest welfare functions can be estimated by comparing sediment yield in stocked with non-stocked area. Sediment yield of reservoirs in stocked area were collected from farmland improvement associations. The sediment yields in non-stocked area were using USLE (Universal Soil Loss Equation) in the same reservoirs. Forests' erosion control function estimated by differences of the sediment yield between stocked and non-stocked area was static model because of no consideration on forest aging. Dynamic model was developed to consider a forest stand age. The model comprises the relationship between average forest age in watershed and sediment yield. The amount of sediment yield was different depending mother rocks. It decreased exponentially according to the forest's grow up. In case of igneous rock, the volume of sediment yield $Y_{ig}=1.4431e\;^{0.023x}$(x=average forest age), metamorphic rock $Y_{me}=4.7115e\;^{0.0694x}$, and sedimentary rock $Y_{se}=1.2808e\;^{0.028x}$.

A Study on the Status Analysis of Cut Slope in Gyeongnam Region (경남지역 절취사면의 현황분석에 관한 연구)

  • This study examined 233 cut slopes in Gyeongnam region; evaluated hazards and slope conditions involved in the slope; and determined the priority order for reinforcement. The conclusions are summarized in the following. (1) The slopes that need reinforcement or maintenance are 153, accounting for 65.6% of the entire slopes. Slopes with a length of $0{\sim}200m$ account for 70.9%; slopes with a height of $10{\sim}20m$ account for over 50%. (2) Slopes with slope of more than 1:0.5 account for 70.9% of the entire slopes. The steepness of the slope is owing to more rock slopes than soil slopes. (3) The percentages of rock slopes, soil slopes, complex slopes mixed with rocks and soil, and slopes comprised of igneous rocks are 54.4%, 24.9%, 20.7%, and 54.1%, respectively. (4) In the rock area occurred cave-in, plain failure, wedge failure, and overturning failure, in order. Slopes with volcanic rocks are the most unstable, while sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks are relatively stable. (5) When the slope height is over 20m, low grade slopes are more than 80%; leading to the conclusion that the higher the slope height is, the more unstable the slope is.

Rock Slope Stability Analysis in Boeun Region Considering Properties of Discontinuities (불연속면의 특성은 고려한 보은지역 암반사면 안정성해석)

  • The study area. Boeun-eup Boeun-kun, belongs to Ogchon metamorphic belt which is highly metamorphosed and consisted of complex geologic formations. Even though the geological structures and formations are complex and metamorphosed, the geological investigation and consideration are not enough and consequently the plane failure is occurred in the rock slope which was under construction on 1 : 0.5 gradient. This area is assessed as unstable and additional failure is possible by the discontinuity with same direction of failure surface. Therefore, the authors evaluate the slope stability using various analysis methods such as SMR, stereographic projection method, and the limit equilibrium analysis. In order to analyze stress redistribution and nonlinear displacement behavior caused by stress release, the authors conduct numerical analysis with UDEC and then the behavior of rock mass is analyzed after reinforcements are applied.

A Study on Extraction of Non-metallic Ore Deposits from Remote Sensing Data of the Haenam Area (원격탐사자료에 의한 해남지역 비금속광상 및 관련 특성 추출을 위한 연구)

  • A study was made on the feature extraction for non-metallic one deposits and their related geology using the Remote Sensing and Airborne Radiometric data. The area chosen is around the Haenam area, where dickite and Quarzite mines are distributed in. The geology of the area consists mainly of Cretaceous volcanics and PreCambrian metamorphic. The methods applied are study on the reflectance characteristics of minerals and rocks sampled in the study area, and the feature extraction extraction of histogram normalized images for Landsat TM and Airborne Radiometric data, and finally evaluation of applicability of some useful pattern recognition techniques for regional lithological mapping. As a result, reflectances of non-metallic minerals are much higher than rock samples in the area. However, low grade dickites are slightly higher than rock samples, probably due to their greyish colour and also their textural features which may scatter the reflectance and may be capable of capturing much hychoryl ions. The reflectances of rock samples may depend on the degree of whiteness of samples. The outcrops or mine dumps in the study area were most effectively extracted on the histogram normalized image of TM Band 1, 2 and 3, due to their high reflectivity. The Masking technique using the above bands may be the most effective and the natural colour composite may provide some success as well. The colour composite image of PCA may also be effective in extracting geological features, and airborne radiometric data may be useful to some degree as an complementary tool.
