  • In the view of robust design optimization, RAE2822 airfoil was designed to achieve not only the maximum lift-to-drag ratio but also insensitivity of that. While the RAE2822 is flying at the cruise speed, Mach variation is considered as the operational uncertainty. In order to explore the design space, metamodels were introduced instead of consecutively computing the gradient. Also a metamodel was used to represent the sigma space. Using the metamodel, an optimum value was searched in the view of global optimization.

  • In recent study on design of experiments, the complicate metamodeling has been studied because defining exact model using computer simulation is expensive and time consuming. Thus, some designers often use approximate models, which express the relation between some inputs and outputs. In this paper, we review and compare the complicate metamodels, which are expressed by the interaction of various data through trying many physical experiments and running a computer simulation. The prediction model in this paper employs interpolation schemes known as ordinary kriging developed in the fields of spatial statistics and kriging in Design and Analysis of Computer Experiments (DACE) model. We will focus on describing the definitions, the prediction functions and the algorithms of two kriging methods, and assess the error measures of those by using some validation methods.

  • This study proposes the structural optimization of a manifold valve. FE analysis is performed to evaluate the strength of a manifold valve. In addition, the structural optimization technique is applied to reduce its weight. In this study, the optimization method using the kriging interpolation method is adopted to obtain the minimum weight satisfying the strength constraint. The maximum stress and the weight are replaced by the metamodels. In this process, tile sample points are generated by latin-hypercube design. Optimum designs are obtained by ANSYS Workbench and the in-house program.

  • Building Information Modeling (BIM) models are a powerful tool for preserving and using architectural history. Manually creating information models for such a significant number and variety of architectural monuments as Dong drum towers is challenging. The building logic based on "actual measurement construction" was investigated using the metamodel idea, and a metamodel-based automated modeling approach for the wood framework of Dong drum towers was presented utilizing programmable algorithms. Metamodels of fundamental frame kinds were also constructed. Case studies were used to verify the automated modeling's correctness, completeness, and efficiency using metamodel. The results suggest that, compared to manual modeling, automated modeling using metamodel may enhance the model's integrity and correctness by 5-10% while also reducing time efficiency by 10-20%. Metamodel and construction logic offer a novel way to investigate data-driven autonomous information-based modeling.

  • Rail clamps are mechanical components installed to fix the container crane to its lower members against wind blast or slip. According to rail clamps should be designed to survive harsh wind loading conditions. In this study, a jaw structure, which is a part of a wedge-typed rail clamp, is optimized with respect to its strength under a severe wind loading condition. According to the classification of structural optimization, the structural optimization of a jaw is included in the category of shape optimization. Conventional structural optimization methods have difficulties in defining complex shape design variables and preventing mesh distortions. To overcome the difficulties, the metamodel using Kriging interpolation method is introduced to replace the true response by an approximate one. This research presents the shape optimization of a jaw using iterative Kriging interpolation models and a simulated annealing algorithm. The new Kriging models are iteratively constructed by refining the former Kriging models. This process is continued until the convergence criteria are satisfied. The optimum results obtained by the suggested method are compared with those obtained by the DOE (design of experiments) and VT (variation technology) methods built in ANSYS WORKBENCH.

  • Double-deck train have studied in the next generation train in KRRI. Double-deck train have more seat capacities compared with single deck vehicles and is a efficient, reliable and comfortable alternative train. Because of heavy weight, weight minimization of double-deck train carbody is imperative to reduce cost and extend life-time of train. Weight minimization problem of the double-deck train car-body is required to decide 66 design variables of thicknesses for large aluminum extruded panel while satisfying stress constraints. Design variables are too many and one execution of structural analysis of double-deck train carbody is time-consuming. Therefore, we adopt approximation technique to save computational cost of optimization process. Metamodels such as response surface model (RSM) and kriging model are used to approximate model-based optimization is described. RSM is easy to obtain and expressed explicit function, but this is not suitable for highly nonlinear and large scaled problems. Kriging model employs an interpolation scheme and is developed in the fields of spatial statistics and geostatistics. Target of this design is to find optimum thickness of AEP to minimize weight of doulbe-deck train carbody. In this study, meta model techniques are introduced to carry out weight minimization of a double-deck train car-body.

  • Many methods for reliability analysis have been studied and one of them, a moment method, has the advantage that it doesn't require sensitivities of performance functions. The moment method for reliability analysis requires the first four moments of a performance function and then Pearson system is used for the probability of failure where the accuracy of the probability of failure greatly depends on that of the first four moments. But it is generally impossible to assess them analytically for multidimensional functions, and numerical integration is mainly used to estimate the moment. However, numerical integration requires many function evaluations and in case of involving finite element analyses, the calculation of the first fo 따 moments is very time-consuming. To solve the problem, this research proposes a new method of approximating the first four moments based on kriging metamodel. The proposed method substitutes the kriging metamodel for the performance function and can also evaluate the accuracy of the calculated moments adjusting the approximation range. Numerical examples show the proposed method can approximate the moments accurately with the less function evaluations and evaluate the accuracy of the calculated moments.

  • RBDO approach based on a sampling method with the Kriging metamodel and Constraint Boundary Sampling (CBS), which is sequential sampling method to generate metamodels is proposed. The major advantage of the proposed RBDO approach is that it does not require Most Probable failure Point (MPP) which is essential for First-Order Reliability Method (FORM)-based RBDO approach. The Monte Carlo Sampling (MCS), most well-known method of the sampling methods for the reliability analysis is used to assess the reliability of constraints. In addition, a Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) of the constraints is approximated using Moving Least Square (MLS) method from empirical distribution function. It is possible to acquire a probability of failure and its analytic sensitivities by using an approximate function of the CDF for the constraints. Moreover, a concept of inactive design is adapted to improve a numerical efficiency of the proposed approach. Computational accuracy and efficiency of the proposed RBDO approach are demonstrated by numerical and engineering problems.

  • Recently simulation model becomes an essential tool for analysis and design of a system but it is often expensive and time consuming as it becomes complicate to achieve reliable results. Therefore, high-fidelity simulation model needs to be replaced by an approximate model, the so-called metamodel. Metamodeling techniques include 3 components of sampling, metamodel and validation. Cross-validation approach has been proposed to provide sequnatially new sample point based on cross-validation error but it is very expensive because cross-validation must be evaluated at each stage. To enhance the cross-validation of metamodel, sequential sampling method using candidate points and representative cross-validation is proposed in this paper. The candidate and representative cross-validation approach of sequential sampling is illustrated for two-dimensional domain. To verify the performance of the suggested sampling technique, we compare the accuracy of the metamodels for various mathematical functions with that obtained by conventional sequential sampling strategies such as maximum distance, mean squared error, and maximum entropy sequential samplings. Through this research we team that the proposed approach is computationally inexpensive and provides good prediction performance.

  • Computer simulation is essential to design the suspension elements of railway vehicle. By computer simulation, engineers can assess the feasibility of the given design factors and change them to get a better design. But if one wishes to perform complex analysis on the simulation, such as railway vehicle dynamic, the computational time can become overwhelming. Therefore, many researchers have used a surrogate model that has a regression model performed on a data sampling of the simulation. In general, metamodels(surrogate model) take the form y($\chi$)=f($\chi$)+$\varepsilon$, where y($\chi$) is the true output, f($\chi$) is the metamodel output, and is the error. In this paper, a second order polynomial equation is used as the RSM(response surface model) for high speed train that have twenty-nine design variables and forty-six responses. After the RSM is constructed, multi-objective optimal solutions are achieved by using a nonlinear programming method called VMM(variable matric method) This paper shows that the RSM is a very efficient model to solve the complex optimization problem.
