  • This paper describes the particle-initiated breakdown characteristics of various spacers, which have a ribbed surface, in the presence of a metallic particle. The particle was attached on the surface of each spacer. The breakdown voltages were measured by changing the length and thickness of the rib. Also the electrical field analyses were performed. As a result, the breakdown voltage of the spacer with two ribs was highest, and it was varied by the length and the thickness of the rib. Especially, in case of the rib with round edge, the breakdown voltage was higher than that with rectangular edge, which complied with the result through the field analysis.

  • The preparation of composite powders for plasma spraying by an in-house designed mechanofusion process is investigated. Results show that dry particle coating depends on the chemical and mechanical properties of powders. In metal/oxide and metal/oxide/carbide powder mixtures, fine ceramic particles coat the surface of the metallic coarser particles. A nearly rounded shape of the final composite particles is induced by the mechanical energy input with no formation of new phases. However with the carbide/metal powdered system, only an intimate mixture of components is achieved. It is suggested that the coating mechanism is governed by agglomeration and rolling phenomena.

  • This paper was provided to help in detecting defects in power transformer. For this purpose, a partial discharge cell was designed and manufactured as a discharge source to simulate particle defected paper-oil insulation in power transformer. Experimental set-up for measuring PD signals was described. Magnitude of electromagnetic wave signals and corresponding amount of apparent discharge were measured simultaneously against phase of applied voltage to the discharge cell. Frequency range and pattern of PRPD(Phase Resolved Partial Discharge) of partial discharge signals were examined and analyzed. The results will be contributed to build the defect database of power transformer and to decrease the substation faults.

  • Gallium nitride (GaN) nanoparticles are synthesized by the gallium particle trapping effect in a $N_2$ nonthermal plasma with metallic Ga vapor. A proposed method has an advantage of synthesized GaN nanoparticle purity because the gallium vapor from the inductively heated tungsten boat does not contain any impurity source. The synthesized particle size can be controlled by the amount of Ga vapor, which is adjusted using the plasma emission ratio of nitrogen to gallium, owing to the particle trapping effect. The synthesized nanoparticles are investigated by electron microscopy studies. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) studies confirm that the synthesized GaN nanoparticles (10-40 nm) crystallize in a single-phase wurtzite structure. Room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) measurements indicate the band-edge emission of GaN at around 378 nm without yellow emission, which implies that the synthesized GaN nanoparticles have high crystallinity.

  • Nanostructured high strength metastable Al-, Mg- and Ti-based alloys containing different amorphous, quasicrystalline and nanocrystalline phases are synthesized by non-equilibrium processing techniques. Such alloys can be prepared by quenching from the melt or by powder metallurgy techniques. This paper focuses on one hand on mechanically alloyed and ball milled powders containing different volume fractions of amorphous or nano-(quasi)crystalline phases, consolidated bulk specimens and, on the other hand. on cast specimens containing different constituent phases with different length-scale. As one example. $Mg_{55}Y_{15}Cu_{30}$- based metallic glass matrix composites are produced by mechanical alloying of elemental powder mixtures containing up to 30 vol.% $Y_2O_3$ particles. The comparison with the particle-free metallic glass reveals that the nanosized second phase oxide particles do not significantly affect the glass-forming ability upon mechanical alloying despite some limited particle dissolution. A supercooled liquid region with an extension of about 50 K can be maintained in the presence of the oxides. The distinct viscosity decrease in the supercooled liquid regime allows to consolidate the powders into bulk samples by uniaxial hot pressing. The $Y_2O_3$ additions increase the mechanical strength of the composites compared to the $Mg_{55}Y_{15}Cu_{30}$ metallic glass. The second example deals with Al-Mn-Ce and Al-Cu-Fe composites with quasicrystalline particles as reinforcements, which are prepared by quenching from the melt and by powder metallurgy. $Al_{98-x}Mn_xCe_2$ (x =5,6,7) melt-spun ribbons containing a major quasicrystalline phase coexisting with an Al-matrix on a nanometer scale are pulverized by ball milling. The powders are consolidated by hot extrusion. Grain growth during consolidation causes the formation of a micrometer-scale microstructure. Mechanical alloying of $Al_{63}Cu_{25}Fe_{12}$ leads to single-phase quasicrystalline powders. which are blended with different volume fractions of pure Al-powder and hot extruded forming $Al_{100-x}$$(Al_{0.63}Cu_{0.25}Fe_{0.12})_x$ (x = 40,50,60,80) micrometer-scale composites. Compression test data reveal a high yield strength of ${\sigma}_y{\geq}$700 MPa and a ductility of ${\varepsilon}_{pl}{\geq}$5% for than the Al-Mn-Ce bulk samples. The strength level of the Al-Cu-Fe alloys is ${\sigma}_y{\leq}$550 MPa significantly lower. By the addition of different amounts of aluminum, the mechanical properties can be tuned to a wide range. Finally, a bulk metallic glass-forming Ti-Cu-Ni-Sn alloy with in situ formed composite microstructure prepared by both centrifugal and injection casting presents more than 6% plastic strain under compressive stress at room temperature. The in situ formed composite contains dendritic hcp Ti solid solution precipitates and a few $Ti_3Sn,\;{\beta}$-(Cu, Sn) grains dispersed in a glassy matrix. The composite micro- structure can avoid the development of the highly localized shear bands typical for the room temperature defor-mation of monolithic glasses. Instead, widely developed shear bands with evident protuberance are observed. resulting in significant yielding and homogeneous plastic deformation over the entire sample.

  • PM10 concentration of total 48 samples collected from 4 sites (the root of Miryang University, Sangnam township Office in Miryang. the root of Changwon elementary school, and Junam reservoir in Changwon) turned out to range from 42.29 to 69.49{\mu}g/m^{3}$, and the average concentration was the root of Changwon elementary school $(69.49{\mu}g/m^{3})$>the root of Miryang university $(58.59{\mu}g/m^{3})$>Junam reservoir $(43.56{\mu}g/m^{3})$>Sangnam township Office $(42.29{\mu}g/m^{3}).> In particular, Junam reservoir, the Clean Area, had a slightly higher value than Sangnam township Office. It was thought although the site was plane and windy without pollutants around. it had a higher concentration value influenced by external factors including bigger population and a northeasterly wind due to a newly-established industrial complex nearby. As for water-soluble ions among PM10 particle collected in Miryang and Changwon area, SO42- accounted for $50{/%}$ and NO3-, was $35{\%}$, and the concentration order was S042->N03->Cl->F-. As for the average concentration of metallic components among PM10 particle collected in Miryang and Changwon area. the root of Changwon elementary school had the AI concentration, Fe concentration and Zn concentration 4 times, 3 times and 1.5 times that of Junam reservoir, respectively. The root of Miryang University had the AI concentration 2 times that of Sangnam township Office, and had Fe concentration and Zn concentration $1.2\~1.5$ times those of Sangnam township Office. When it comes to the relation between metallic elements and meteorological factors in Changwon area, the highest coefficient of correlation was between temperature and humidity with 0.92, and temperature and wind speed turned out in the reverse correlation. The coefficient of correlation between Al and Cr was as high as 0.78. Among metallic elements, the coefficient of correlation between Cu and Pb, Cd, Al were 0.84, 0.85, 0.79, respectively. It is thought that the high coefficient of correlation between Cu and Pb is ascribed to busy traffic and wind in the urban areas, Sammun-dong and Gagok-dong in Miryang. Meanwhile, the coefficients of correlation between Fe and Cu, Al, Zn, Cd, Pb were in the reverse correlation. These coefficients of correlation are attributed to the difference in pollutant sources, rather than difference in pollutant and non-pollutant.

  • The effect of particle size and compaction pressure on the thermoelectric properties of n-type $FeSi_2$ was investigated. The starting powders with various particle size were pressed into a compact (compaction pressure; $70{\sim}220kg/cm^2$). The compact specimens were sintered at 1473 K for 7 h and annealed at 1103 K for 100 h under Ar atmosphere to transform to the semiconducting ${\beta}$-phase. The microstructure and phases of the specimens were observed by SEM, XRD and EDS. The electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient were measured simultaneously for the same specimen at r.t.~1023 K in Ar atmosphere. The electrical conductivity increased with decreasing particle size and hence the increases of relative density of the sintered body and the amount of residual metallic phase ${\varepsilon}$-FeSi due to a increase of the electrical conductivity. The Seebeck coefficient exhibited the maximum value at about 700~800 K and decreased with decreasing particle size. This must be due to a increase of residual metallic phase ${\varepsilon}$-FeSi. On the other hand, the change of compaction pressure appeared to have little effect on the thermoelectric properties. Consequently, the power factor would be affected more by particle size than compaction pressure.

  • In order to treat groundwater containing high levels of nitrate, nitrate reduction by nano sized zero-valent iron (nZVI) was studied using batch experiments. Compared to nitrate removal efficiencies at different mass ratios of $nitrate/Fe^0$, the removal efficiency at the mass ratio of 0.02% was the highest(54.59%). To enhance nitrate removal efficiency, surface modification of nZVI was performed using metallic catalysis such as Pd, Ni and Cu. Nitrate removal efficiency by Cu-nZVI (at $catalyst/Fe^0$ mass ratio of 0.1%) was 66.34%. It showed that the removal efficiency of Cu-nZVI was greater than that of the other catalysts. The observed rate constant ($k_{obs}$) of nitrate reduction by Cu-nZVI was estimated to $0.7501min^{-1}$ at the Cu/Fe mass ratio of 0.1%. On the other hand, TEM images showed that the average particle sizes of synthetic nZVI and Cu-nZVI were 40~60 and 80~100 nm, respectively. The results imply that catalyst effects may be more important than particle size effects in the enhancement of nitrate reduction by nZVI.

  • Irradiation of 20mg of natural $Dy(NO_3)_3$ in a neutron flux of $2{\times}10^{13}n/cm^2$ sec for 4 hours gave 5.76 Ci of $^{165}Dy$(specific activity, 610mCi/mg Dy) with high radionuclidic purity (>99.9 %). $^{165}Dy-MA$ was prepared in a quantitative yield by reacting the aqueous solution of $^{165}Dy(NO_3)_3$ with sodium borohydride solution in 0.2N NaOH. Coulter particle analyzer exhibited mean particle size of $2.6{\mu}m$ (range $1{\sim}6{\mu}m$), Even though the $^{165}Dy-MA$ suspension in saline was stored at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours or autoclaved at $121^{\circ}C$ for 30minutes, there was no significant change in particle size and leakage problem indicating the prepared $^{165}Dy-MA$ is sufficiently stable. In-vivo retention studies were carried out by administering $^{165}Dy-MA$ into the knee joint space of normal rabbits. Gamma camera analysis showed high retention in joint space of normal rabbits. Gamma camera analysis showed high retention in joint space even at 24 hours after administration (> 99.9%). The ease with which the $^{165}Dy-MA$ can be made in the narrow size range and their high invitro and vivo stability make them attractive agents for radiation synovectomy.
