  • This study has numerically investigated the flame structure and emission characteristics in the metal fiber burner. The one-dimensional premixed flame approach has been adopted to simulate the combustion processes of the metal fiber burner. Numerical results indicate that the present approach is capable of predicting the essential combustion characteristics of the metal fiber burner. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussion has been made for the effects of equivalence ratio and thermal load on the precise flame structure and the pollutant emission in the metal fiber burner.

  • Sustaining of flame stability of the burner installed in Dielsel exhaust pipe is very difficult because of steep fluctuation of pressure and flow rate. A burner for DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) which clogged by collected soot regeneration has been made of metal fiber for the purpose of realization of flame stability even in unfavorable condition of Diesel engine exhaust. Flame stability of the metal fiber burner has been investigated in various condition of engine operation. It has been identified that metal fiber burner with liner which has swirl guide vane presents excellent flame stability even in the higher engine revolutions than 3000rpm and sudden variation. The results offer the possibility of development of full flow burner system for DPF regeneration.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the combustion characteristics of the flat burner using metal fiber. By changing the excess air ratio which affects strongly to the combustion characteristics, the flame stability range in the metal fiber were found and the range of the blue flame mode and radiant mode were distinguished and $NOx\;and\;O_{2}$ distributions in combustor were measured at two conditions which represents the blue flame mode and radiant mode.

  • Radiant burners are applicable to drying, preheating and curing in materials manufacturing processes. High radiation efficiency is one of the most important performance criteria for these burners. The wide variation in reported radiation efficiencies are partly due to the differences in the measurement techniques. In the present work, water cooled radiant heat flux meter was used to measure radiant heat flux from a metal fiber mat burner. Non-contact type thermometer was also utilized to measure the surface temperature of the burner. Combustion gas was measured by gas analyzers. According to the thermal loads and stoichiometric ratios, radiant heat transfer ratio and combustion performance were discussed here in.

  • This study was conducted to investigate on the combustion characteristic with the effects of mat thickness and fuel kinds in a metal-fiber burner. The mode transition point is confirmed by the K value, which was defined as the rate of flow velocity and laminar burning velocity. The ($T^4_{sur}-T^4_{\infty}$) is highest at methane flame with 3 T thickness. Through the measurement of the unburned mixture temperature, the possibility of submerged flame in surface combustion burner was confirmed. The rapid emission of CO occurs nearby limit blow out (LBO) because of the increase of flow velocity. In case of NOx, the trend is similar with surface temperature. However, it also considered that the NOx emission is affected by residence time with flame position.

  • A strong combustion-driven sound from a surface burner made of a perforated metal fiber plate for premixed gas was investigated to clarify the physical mechanism of its generation. A simple model was developed for the acoustic power generation in terms of the heat transfer response function and the acoustic impedance of the burner. The acoustic impedance of the perforated metal fiber placed on the open exit was measured and the heat release response of the burner to the oscillating flow associated with the acoustic disturbance was expressed in terms of a response function. It was found that the power is generated by the heat release in response to the downstream particle velocity, in contrast to the upstream velocity in the case of the Rijke oscillation driven by a heater placed in the lower half of a columm with upstream flow. The measured frequencies of the oscillation were in agreement with the estimated resonance frequencies and their excitation was varied with the combustion conditions. For the same fuel rate, the excited frequency increases with the air ratio if it is low but decreases with the ratio if not so low. Such frequency characteristics were explained by assuming a heat release response function with a time constant and it was shown that the excited frequency decreases as the time constant increases.

  • The purpose of this study is investigated on the combustion and the thermal characteristics of porous media burners which are many using for a condensing boiler recently. In addition, results of this study will be used the fundamental information to decide the burner type which will be applied to the future development of EGR(Exhaust gas recirculation) condensing boiler. Two flat type of burners made of a the metal fiber(MF) and the ceramic(CM) were selected and examined, experimentally. As experimental results, the emitted CO concentration of CM was higher than that of MF. However, the NO concentration of MF was higher than that of CM. The efficiencies of both burners were increased as increasing the burner capacity. While the efficiency of MF was higher than that of CM, regardless of the burner capacity. In the experimental range, MF is appropriated for the burner material and 0.8 of equivalence ratio is an optimal operation condition, regarding of the proportional control, the thermal efficiency and emitted NO and CO concentration based on the regulations of KS B standard and EN 677 standard.

  • The premixed burner is a very strong candidate for using household boiler burner system because it has high efficiency, low emission and can be used in compact boiler system. Usually, household boiler burner systems use a Bunsen burner, which consists of an inner rich premixed flame and fuel burned completely by a secondary air supply. It has a relatively long flame length and operates in a high excess of air, so it is difficult to fit such a burner into a high efficiency compact boiler. In this paper, the characteristics of a premixed combustion burner for surface media such as metal fiber, ceramic, and SUS fin were evaluated. In particular, the flow velocity over the burner surface for the cold flow characteristics of the surface material were measured and adjusted. The combustion tests were carried out by taking pictures of the flame and measuring the flame temperature. The amounts of CO and NO were measured and the characteristics of the surface burner materials, combustion chamber, and heat exchangers were evaluated for various excess air ratios and heating values.
