Objectives : Gossypium arboreum (cotton) is traditionally used to treat various health disorders. However, anti-amnesic effect of G. arboreum has not been reported. The objective of this study was to investigate in-vivo the anti-amnesic effects along with in vitro antioxidant and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition potential in G. arboreum seed essential oil. Methods : The essential oil of G. arboreum obtained by solid phase microextraction (SPME) techniques were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assay were performed to determine the antioxidant activity at various concentrations (312.5, 625, 1250, 2500, 5000, 10000 ㎍/㎖. Y-maze, passive avoidance and Morris water maze tests were carried out to evaluate improved effect on scopolamine (1 mg/kg)-induced memory dysfunction at the dose level of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg. Donepezil (5 mg/kg) was used as a positive drug control. We performed acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity assay in ex vivo. Results : Five volatile compounds were identified in G. arboreum. The assays of DPPH and ABTS revealed that G. arboreum increased antioxidant activity in a dose-dependent manner. G. arboreum ameliorated the percent of spontaneous alternation in the Y-maze test, shortened step-through latency in the passive avoidance test, and increased swimming time in the target zone in the Morris water maze test. In addition, G. arboreum inhibited the AChE activity. Conclusions : Based on these findings, G. arboreum may aid in the prevention and treatment of learning and memory-deficit disorders through antioxidant and AChE inhibitory activities.
Objective : The inappropriate or excessive apoptosis has been known to be associated with neurodegenerative disorders including intracranial hemorrhage(ICH). Paeoniae radix, in traditional Korean medicine, has played its role as bloodnourisher and yin-astringent. In the present study, the effect of Paeoniae radix on the inhibition of neurodegeneration in the brain of rats after artificial ICH and on the resulting apoptosis was investigated. Methods : 30 rats were divided into 6 equal groups ; the sham-operation group, the hemorrhage-induction group, the hemorrhage-induction with 10, 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg Paeoniae radix-treated group, respectively. Stereotactic surgery was performed and collagenase was infused to induce ICH in the region of CA1 of hippocampus of rats. The sham group took only saline infusion. For 7 days after the surgery, 4 testing groups had intraperitoneal injections of Paeoniae radix extract. The step-down inhibitory avoidance task, measurement of neurodegeneration degree in the CA1 region of the hippocampus, and detection of caspase-3 and newly generated cells in the dentate gyrus were done after animal sacrifice. Results : Rats receiving Paeoniae radix extract showed increased latency time in the inhibitory avoidance task. The extension of neuron-deprived areas in the CA1 region was significantly suppressed in the Paeonia treated groups. Also expressions of caspase-3 in the CA1 region and cortex were significantly inhibited in the Paeonia treated groups. The cell proliferation was evaluated by means of BrdU methods and proved to be decreased in the Paeonia treated groups. Conclusion : These results suggest that Paeoniae radix has potential to suppress short-tenn memory loss after devastating neurologic accidents. Also it was proved that Paeoniae radix has a neuroprotective effect and alleviates central nervous complications following intracerebral hemorrhage. Furthermore, it may imply that this medicinal plant can be widely used for vascular dementia and other neurodegenerative disorders.
Power-aware design is one of the most important areas to be emphasized in multimedia mobile systems, in which data transfers dominate the power consumption. In this paper, we propose a new architecture for motion compensation (MC) of H.264/AVC with power reduction by decreasing the data transfers. For this purpose, a reconfigurable microarchitecture based on data type is proposed for interpolation and it is mapped onto the dedicated motion compensation IP (intellectual property) effectively without sacrificing the performance or the system latency. The original quarter-pel interpolation equation that consists of one or two half-pel interpolations and one averaging operation is designed to have different execution control modes, which result in decreasing memory accesses greatly and maintaining the system efficiency. The simulation result shows that the proposed method could reduce up to 87% of power consumption caused by data transfers over the conventional method in MC module.
Recently, many embedded devices that have the computing capability required for deep learning have become available; hence, many new applications using these devices are emerging. However, these embedded devices have an architecture different from that of PCs and high-performance servers. In this paper, we propose a method that improves the performance of deep-learning framework by considering the architecture of an embedded device that shares memory between the CPU and the GPU. The proposed method is implemented in Caffe, an open-source deep-learning framework, and is evaluated on an NVIDIA Jetson TK1 embedded device. In the experiment, we investigate the image recognition performance of several state-of-the-art deep-learning networks, including AlexNet, VGGNet, and GoogLeNet. Our results show that the proposed method can achieve significant performance gain. For instance, in AlexNet, we could reduce image recognition latency by about 33% and energy consumption by about 50%.
The data prefetching scheme is an effective technique to reduce the main memory access latency by exploiting the overlap of processor computations with data accesses. However, if the prefetched data replicate the useful existing data in the cache memory and they are not being used in computations. performances of programs are aggravated. This phenomenon results from the lack of correct predictions for data being used in the future. When parallel programs exploit the data arrays for computations, the grain size is useful information for data prefetching scheme because it implies the range of data using in computations. Based on this information, we suggest a new data prefetching scheme exploited by the grain size of the parallel program. Simulation results show that the suggested prefetching scheme improves the performance of the simulated parallel programs due to the reduction of bus transactions as well as useful prefetching operations.
This paper proposed the low power texture cache for mobile 3D graphics accelerators. It is very important to reduce the leakage power in the standby mode for mobile 3D graphics accelerators and the memory access latency of texture mapping in the active mode which needs a large memory bandwidth. The proposed structure reduces the leakage power using variable threshold values of power mode transitions according to the selected texture filtering algorithms of application programs, which has the run time gain for texture mapping. In the trace driven cache simulation the proposed structure shows the best 7% performance gain to the previous MSA cache according to the new performance metric considering both normalized leakage power and run time impact.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to characterize the neuroprotective effects and anxiolytic-like effects of Gongjin-dan and Polygala japonica, Polygala tenuifolia, Acorus gramineus mixed pills(G.J.D-P.P.A.). Methods : The neuroprotective effects of G.J.D-P.P.A. determined by the passive avoidance and Y-maze tasks and Morris water maze task, and the anxiolytic-like effects of the G.J.D-P.P.A. using an elevated plus-maze(EPM) in mice. Results : Drug-induced amnesia was induced by treating animals with scopolamine(1 mg/kg, i.p.). A single G.J.D-P.P.A.(400 and 800 mg/kg) administration significantly enhanced cognitive function and attenuated scopolamine-induced cognitive impairments as determined by the passive avoidance and Y-maze tasks(P < 0.05) and also reduced escape-latency on the Morris water maze task(P < 0.05). The administration of GJD-PPA(400 and 800 mg/kg) significantly increased the percentage of time spent in open arms and entries into the open arms of the EPM compared with saline-treated control group(P < 0.05). Moreover, there were no changes in the locomotor activity and myorelaxant effects in any group compared with saline-treated control group. Conclusions : These results suggest that GJD-PPA dramatically possesses the anti-amnestic and cognitive-enhancing activities related to the memory processes, and promotes the anxiolytic-like activity in mice.

This study proposed a key-frame automatic extraction method for video storyboard surrogates based on users' cognitive responses, EEG signals and discriminant analysis. Using twenty participants, we examined which ERP pattern is suitable for each step, assuming that there are five image recognition and process steps (stimuli attention, stimuli perception, memory retrieval, stimuli/memory comparison, relevance judgement). As a result, we found that each step has a suitable ERP pattern, such as N100, P200, N400, P3b, and P600. Moreover, we also found that the peak amplitude of left parietal lobe (P7) and the latency of FP2 are important variables in distinguishing among relevant, partial, and non-relevant frames. Using these variables, we conducted a discriminant analysis to classify between relevant and non-relevant frames.

Black ginseng (BG) has been widely used as herbal treatment for improving physiological function. In order to investigate the neuroprotective action of this herbal medicine, we examined the influence of BG on the learning and memory of rats using the Morris water maze, and we studied the effects of BG on the central cholinergic system and neural nitric oxide synthesis in the hippocampus of rats with neuronal and cognitive impairment. After middle cerebral artery occlusion was applied for 2h, the rats were administered BG (100 or 400 $mgkg^{-1}$, p.o.) daily for 2 weeks, followed by training and performance of the Morris water maze test. The rats with ischemic insults showed impaired learning and memory on the tasks. Treatment with BG produced improvement in the escape latency to find the platform. Further, the BG groups showed a reduced loss of cholinergic immunoreactivity and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase (NADPH-d)-positive neurons in the hippocampus compared to that of the ISC group. These results demonstrated that BG has a protective effect against ischemia-induced neuronal and cognitive impairment. Our results suggest that BG might be useful for the treatment of vascular dementia.

OneNAND flash combines the advantages of NAND and NOR flash, and has become an alternative to the former. But the advanced features of OneNAND flash are not utilized effectively in demand paging systems designed for NAND flash. We propose delayed dual buffering, a demand paging system which fully exploits the random-access I/O interface and dual page buffers of OneNAND flash demand paging system. It effectively reduces the time of page transfer from the OneNAND page buffer to the main memory. On average, it achieves and 28.5% reduction in execution time and 4.4% reduction in paging system energy consumption.
