  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the flexible structure of parabolic shell using photostrictive actuators. The analysis is made to know its dynamic behavior and light-induced control forces for coupled parabolic shell. The effects of an actuator location as well as membrane and bending components under the control action have been analyzed considering the approximate spherical model. The parabolic membrane shell accuracy is being mathematically approximated and validated comparing the light induced control forces using approximate equivalent spherical shell model. The parabolic shell with kapton smart material and photostrictive actuators has been used to formulate the governing equation in the transverse direction. The Kirchhoff-Love assumptions are used to obtain the governing equation of shell with actuator. The mechanical membrane forces and bending moments for parabolic thin shell with actuator is used to analyze the dynamic effect. The results show that membrane control action is much more significant than bending control action. Photostrictive actuators oriented along circumferential direction (actuator-2) can give better control effect than actuators placed along longitudinal direction (actuator-1). The slight difference is observed between spherical and parabolic shell for a surface with focal length to the diameter ratio of 1.00 or more than unity. Space applications often have the shape of parabolical shells or shell of revolution, due to their required focusing, aiming, or reflecting performance. The present approach is focused that photostrictive actuators can effectively control the vibration of parabolical membrane shell. Also, the actuator's location plays an important role in defining the control force.

  • To prevent major cracking and failure during earthquakes, it is important to design reinforced concrete liquid storage structures, such as water and fuel storage tanks, properly for the hydrodynamic pressure loads caused by seismic excitations. There is a discussion in recent Codes that most of the base shear applied to liquid containment structures is resisted by inplane membrane shear rather than by transverse flexural shear. The purpose of this paper is to underline the importance of the membrane force system in carrying the base shear produced by hydrodynamic pressures in both rectangular and cylindrical tank structures. Only rigid tanks constrained at the base are considered. Analysis is performed for both tall and broad tanks to compare their behavior under seismic excitation. Efforts are made to quantify the percentage of base shear carried by membrane action and the consequent procedures that must be followed for safe design of liquid containing storage structures.

  • The sectional forming analysis considering bending effects from the geometrically deformed shape of two linear membrane finite elements(called super element) was performed under plane strain assumption for analyzing forming processes of an arbitrarily shaped draw-die. For the evaluation of bending effects, the bending equivalent forces are calculated from the bending moment computed using the changes in the interior angle at the middle node of super element, and are agumented to the membrane stretch forces. In order to verify the validity of the bending formulation, the simulation results for the stretch, draw, and bend sections were compared with membrane analysis results and measurements.

  • In this paper, We propose the initial shape finding and dynamic analysis of cable dome structure are presented. Cable dome that is consist of three component such as cable, strut and fabric membrane have complex structural characteristics. Main structural system of cable dome is cable-strut tensegric system, and fabric membrane element Is conceived as cladding roof material. One of the important problem of cable dome is shape finding of those subjected to cable and membrane forces, which stabilize the structures. And the other is structural response from external load effect such as snow and wind When cable dome are subjected to dynamic load such as wind load each structural component has many important problem because of their special structural characteristics. One problem is that geometrical nonlinearity should be considered in the dynamic analysis because large deformation is occurred from their flexible characteristic. The other problem is that wrinkling occurs occasionally because cable and membrane elements can not transmit compressive forces. So this paper describe the physical structural response of cable dome structure.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of biodegradable polycaprolactone membrane on new bone formation and the biodegradation of biphasic alloplastic bone substitutes using animal models. Materials and methods: In this study, bony defect was formed at the canine mandible of 8 mm in diameter, and the defects were filled with Osteon II. The experimental groups were covered with Osteoguide as barrier membrane, and the control groups were closed without membrane coverage. The proportion of new bone and residual bone graft material was measured histologically and histomorphometrically at postoperative 4 and 8 weeks. Results: At 4 weeks, the new bone proportion was similar between the groups. The proportion of remaining graft volume was 27.58 ± 6.26 and 20.01 ± 4.68% on control and experimental groups, respectively (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the two groups in new bone formation and the amount of residual bone graft material at 8 weeks. Conclusion: The biopolymer membrane contributes to early biodegradation of biphasic bone substitutes in the jaw defect but it does not affect the bone formation capacity of the bone graft.

  • Roof is an integral part of building envelope. It protects occupants from environmental forces such as wind, rain, snow and others. Among those environmental forces, wind is a major factor that can cause structural roof damages. Roof due to wind actions can exhibit either flexible or rigid system responses. At present, a dynamic test procedure available is CSA A123.21-04 for the wind uplift resistance evaluation of flexible membrane-roofing systems and there is no dynamic test procedure available in North America for wind uplift resistance evaluation of rigid membrane-roofing system. In order to incorporate rigid membrane-roofing systems into the CSA A123.21-04 testing procedure, this paper presents the development of a load cycle. For this process, the present study compared the wind performance of rigid systems with the flexible systems. Analysis of the pressure time histories data using probability distribution function and power spectral density verified that these two roofs types exhibit different system responses under wind forces. Rain flow counting method was applied on the wind tunnel time histories data. Calculated wind load cycles were compared with the existing load cycle of CSA A123.21-04. With the input from the roof manufacturers and roofing associations, the developed load cycles had been generalized and extended to evaluate the ultimate wind uplift resistance capacity of rigid roofs. This new knowledge is integrated into the new edition of CSA A123.21-10 so that the standard can be used to evaluate wind uplift resistance capacity of membrane roofing systems.

  • A sectional FEA program is developed lot analyzing forming processes of sandwich sheets, which are intensively used recently as a lightweight material of an automobile body. The aluminum sandwich sheet consists of two aluminum skins and a polyprophylen core in between. The aluminum sandwich sheet is dominantly effected by the bending effects in small radius of curvature, so that an appropriate description of bending effects is required to analyze the forming processes. For the evaluation of bending effects, the bending equivalent forces are calculated from the bending moment computed using the curvature of the tool and are added to the membrane stretch forces. To verify the validity of the developed program the sectional FEA results in stretch/draw forming Processes of a square cup and draw forming Processes of an outer hood panel were compared with the measurements.

  • The wave interaction with flexible membrane such as PVC and fabrics is studied to prove its applicability to portable breakwaters. To obtain the wave exciting force acting on flexible membrane, eigen-function expansion method is employed. The effect of flexible is involved in body boundary condition in which x-directional displacement of membrane is obtained by solving the linear membrane equation. Displacement of membrane is assumed to be small compared to wavelength, therefore the tensile force of membrane remains constant. As the numerical examples, transmission and reflection coefficients according to the change of tensile forces are investigated. The hydrodynamic force on membrane, the dynamic tension in the mooring lines and the vertical displacement profile of membrane are also calculated. It is suggested that the flexible membrane can be used to engineering material for the future coastal/ocean applications.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the method of determining the initial fabric membrane structures surface and membrane patterning procedures. Tension structure, such as, fabric membrane structures and cable-net, is stabilized by their initial prestress and boundary condition. The process to find initial structural overall shape of tension structures produced by initial prestress called Shape Finding or Shape Analysis. One of the most important factor for the design of membrane structures is to search initial smooth surface, because unlike steel or concrete building elements which resist loads in bending, all tension structure forces are carried within the surface by membrane stress or cable tension. To obtain initial surface of fabric membrane element in large deformation analysis, the membrane element is idealized as cable using a technique with Force-density method. and that result is compared with well-known nonlinear numerical method, such as Newton-raphson method and Dynamic relaxation method. The shape resulting from Force-density method has been dealt with as the initial membrane shape and used patterning procedures.
