  • An external electrode fluorescent lamps (EEFLs) have the advantage of a long lifetime in the early stages of the study on plasma discharge, interest in the lamp continues. Studies on the operation of external electrode fluorescent lamps have focused mainlyon its use of a type of high frequency (MHz). By performing high brightness using a square wave operation method with the low frequency below 100kHz, which is applied to a narrowed tube type lamp that has several mm of lamp diameter, an EEFL presented the possibility of using it as a light source for backlights. However, because an EEFL generates plasma using wall charges, which considers the impedance characteristics of glass based on the structural principle in discharge, it can be significantly affected by frequency. Thus, this study verifies the change in the characteristics of electromagnetic fields according to the change in frequency through a Maxwell's electromagnetic field simulation and examines the relationship between the change in the EEFL frequency and brightness by measuring the optical. characteristics. In addition, the characteristics of the transformation of energy orbits were verified by investigating the characteristics of the wavelength according to the change in frequency through the OES.

  • During PEMFC(Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) operation monitoring and diagnosis are important issues for reliability and durability. Stack defect can be followed by a critical cell voltage drop in the stack. One method for monitoring the cell voltage is CVM(Cell Voltage Monitoring), where all cells in the stack are electrically connected to a voltage measuring system and monitored these voltages. The other methods are based on the EIS(Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy) and on nonlinear frequency response. In this paper, intermodulation(IM) method for diagnosis PEMFC stack is introduced. To detect one or more critical PEMFC cell voltage PEMFC stack is excited by two or more test sinusoid current, and the frequency response of the stack voltage is analyzed. If one or more critical cell voltage exists, higher harmonics on the voltage frequency spectrum will appear. For the proposed IM method, stack simulation and experiments are conducted.

  • Efforts to reduce noise in industrial application fields, such as automobiles, aircrafts, and plants have been gaining considerable attention while a sound proof wall to protect people from the noise has been intensively investigated by many researchers. In this study, our research group suggested creating a new sound proof wall composed of scrap aluminum chips and perforated plates in a commercial polyester sound proof wall, which was then successfully fabricated. This wall's sound absorption characteristics were measured by an impedance tube method. The sound absorption property was evaluated by measuring the Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) to the standard, ASTM C 423-90a. The noise reduction coefficient of the sound proof wall composed of 3.5 vol.% and 7.5 vol.% of scrap aluminum chips relatively increased to 5% and 8% compared to the commercial polyester sound proof wall. The scrap aluminum perforated plate also relatively increased to 13% compared to the commercial polyester sound proof wall.

  • The elastic modulus of a 3D-printed Kelvin foam plate is investigated by measuring the acoustic wave velocity of 1 MHz ultrasound. An isotropic tetrakaidecahedron foam with 3 mm unit cell is designed and printed layer upon layer to fabricate a Kelvin foam plate of 14 mm thickness with a 3D CAD/printer using ABS plastic. The Kelvin foam plate is completely filled with paraffin wax for impedance matching, so that the acoustic wave may propagate through the porous foam plate. The acoustic wave velocity of the foam plate is measured using the time-of-flight (TOF) method and is used to calculate the elastic modulus of the Kelvin foam plate based on acousto-elasticity. Finite element method (FEM) and micromechanics is applied to the Kelvin foam plate to calculate the theoretical elastic modulus using a non-isotropic tetrakaidecahedron model. The predicted elastic modulus of the Kelvin foam plate from FEM and micromechanics model is similar, which is only 3-4% of the bulk material. The experimental value of the elastic modulus from the ultrasonic method is approximately twice as that of the numerical and theoretical methods because of the flexural deformation of the cell edges neglected in the ultrasonic method.

  • One-port acoustic characteristics of an in-duct source can be measured by the multi-load method using an overdetermined set of open pipes with different lengths as applied loads. The input data. viz. load pressure and load impedance, are usually contaminated by measurement error in the actual measurements, which result in errors in the calculated source parameters. In this paper, the effects of the errors in the input data on the results have been studied numerically, varying the number of loads and their impedances in order to determine what combination of the loads will yield the best result. An error analysis is applied to each case of possible loads, which consist of open pipes. It is noted that, frequently, only a set of open pipes is used when applying the multi-load method to the intake or exhaust sides of internal combustion engines. A set of pipe lengths which cause the calculated results to be least sensitive to the input data error can be found when using open pipe loads. The present work is intended to produce guidelines for preparing an appropriate load set in order to obtain accurate source properties of fluid machines.

  • Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is considered as a clean and efficient energy conversion det ice for mobile and stationary applications. Anions all the components of the PEMFC, the interface between the electrolyte ,and electrode catalyst plays an important role in determining tile cell performance since the electrochemical reactions take place at the interface in contact with tile reactant gases. Therefore, to increase the interface area and obtain a high-performance PEMFC, surface of the electrolyte membrane was roughened by Ar$^{+}$ beam bombardment. The results imply that by modifying surface of the electrolyte membrane, platinum loading can be reduced significantly without performance loss. To optimize the surface treatment condition, effects of ion dose density on characteristics of the membrane/electrode interface were examined by measuring the cell performance, impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammograms. Surface of the modified membranes were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and FT-IR.R.

  • Today, rolling stock has become a fast and convenient mode of transportation and has witnessed increased demand. But the speed improvement has resulted in increased aerodynamic noise and therefore residential districts near the railroad tracks are exposed to ever increasing noise level. A study on methodologies for measuring and appraising rolling stock's environmental noise has therefore become an important area of endeavor. In the case of the environmental noise, there are no changes in tone so prediction can be made by reducing areas around the railway. The present study explores estimation of the noise around the railway using scale model, and the source of the noise has been investigated as well. The scale model of rolling stock will have to be able to measure high frequency noise and it is required to be generated in a short amount of time. Since popping a balloon or firing a gun fits this requirement the present study analyzed the characteristics of these two different noise sources. Measurement was made in a large vacant lot and the reflection due to the ground was also examined. The method proposed here can be used in the future for predicting the environmental noise of railway vehicles.

  • Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association of explosive strength with muscle mass and muscle function measured using traditional methods such as peak torque (PT) and joint angular velocity (PAV). Design: Cross-sectional study Methods: Twenty-nine healthy adults (14 males and 15 females) participated in this study. Body mass index and appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI) were measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis. The explosive strength of the knee extensors was evaluated by measuring the rate of torque development (RTD) and rate of velocity development (RVD). RTD was analyzed by dividing it into early (0-50 ms) and late (100-200 ms) muscle contraction phases. In addition, PT and PAV were measured as traditional methods for assessing muscle function. Results: According to regression analysis, PAV accounts for 24.7% and 66.9% of the variance of RTD 0-50 (p=0.006) and RVD (p<0.001), respectively. On the other hand, ASMI (p=0.035) and isometric PT (p=0.001) explained 49.2% of the RTD 100-200. Conclusions: Early RTD is mainly predicted by PAV, which is thought to be a result of muscle fiber type. Therefore, PAV presents the possibility of an alternative method to evaluate explosive performance. Late RTD seems to be related to ASMI or isometric PT. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to musculoskeletal rehabilitation and evaluation in that they revealed factors contributing to early and late muscle contraction.
