  • Ghost cancelers need to accurately estimate the distortions suffered by transmitted signals on their way to receivers by capturing ghost canceling reference signals in the vertical blanking interval. As ghosts become much severer, sync separation tends to malfunction, making it impossible to acquire measurement data for channel estimation. This paper presents a robust method of acquiring ghost data using their correlation properties, and evaluates its performance through computer simulation. The reference signals are inserted in such a manner that the polarity alternates from one frame to another to remove color bursts and sync signals, and to increase the signal-to-noise ratio as well. As a result, however, they are prone to timing jitters. So a simple yet effective method is proposed that can correct for even fractional time delays. The timing errors are found to be less than about 4% of the sample spacing.

  • Although air, water, and noise pollutions have been widely recognized, electromagnetic forces(EMF) hazard has been rarely recognized as a pollution and very little studies has been done in this country. Thus, in this study electromagnetic forces radiated by various home appliances, once machines, and communication equipments were measured and so were several places radiating strong EMF such as subway stations and electric substations. Among the home appliances microwave oven senates lots of magnetic field and microwaves, and electric mattress does strong magnetic field. In video game room strong magnetic and considerable electric fields were measured. It was observed strong magnetic field inside of electric powered train and very strong magnetic and electric fields on some platforms. Hand-phone and car-phone radiate very hazardous level of microwaves to brain and that they rapidly come into wide use. In this study data base for various electric machines and places radiating strong EMFs were constructed and could be used for future epidemiological studies.

  • Recently, for the speed control of a diesel engine, some methods using the modern control theory such as LQ control technique, or $\textit{H}_{\infty}$control theory etc., have been reported. However, most of speed controlers of a diesel engine ever developed are still using the PID control algorithm. And, as another approach to the speed control of a diesel engine, the authors proposed already a new method to adjust the parameters of the PID controller by a model matching method. In the previous paper, the authors confirmed that the proposed new method is superior to Ziegler & Nichols's method through the analysis of results of the digital simulations under the assumption that the parameters of a diesel engine are known exactly. But, actually, it is very difficult to find out the value of parameters of a diesel engine accurately. And the parameters of a diesel engine are changigng according to the operating condition of a diesel engine. So, in this paper, a method to estimate the parameters of the PID controller for the speed control of a diesel engine by means of the model matching method are proposed. Also, the digital simulations are carried out in cases either with or without measurement noise. And this paper confirms that the proposed method here is superior to Ziegler & Nichols's method through the analysis of the characteristics of indicial responses.

  • This paper presents the design methodology of an unknown input observer for Lipschitz nonlinear systems with unknown inputs in the framework of convex optimization. We use an unknown input observer (UIO) to consider both nonlinearity and disturbance. By deriving a sufficient condition for exponential stability in the linear matrix inequality (LMI) form, existence of a stabilizing observer gain matrix of UIO will be assured by checking whether the quadratic stability margin of the error dynamics is greater than the Lipschitz constant or not. If quadratic stability margin is less than a Lipschitz constant, the coordinate transformation may be used to reduce the Lipschitz constant in the new coordinates. Furthermore, to reduce the maximum singular value of the observer gain matrix elements, an object function to minimize it will be optimally designed by modifying its magnitude so that amplification of sensor measurement noise is minimized via multi-objective optimization algorithm. The performance of UIO is compared to a nonlinear observer (Luenberger-like) with an application to a flexible joint robot system considering a change of load and disturbance. Finally, it is validated via simulations that the estimated angular position and velocity provide true values even in the presence of unknown inputs.

  • Heliostat, as a concentrator reflecting the incident solar energy to the receiver located at the tower, is the most important system in the tower-type solar thermal power plant, since it determines the efficiency and performance of solar thermal plower plant. Thus, a good sun tracking ability as well as its good optical property are required. In this paper, we propose a method to compensate the heliostat sun tracking error. We first model the sun tracking error, which could be measured using BCS (Beam Characterization System), by multilayered neural network. Then the extended Kalman filter was employed to train the neural network. Finally the model is used to compensate the sun tracking errors. Simulated result shows that the method proposed in this paper improve the heliostat sun tracking performance dramatically. It also shows that the training of neural network by the extended Kalman filter provides faster convergence property, more accurate estimation and higher measurement noise rejection ability compared with the other training methods like gradient descent method.

  • An image reconstruction algorithm is proposed to estimate transmitted original images from images displayed on a video terminal. The proposed algorithm acquires images that are displayed on video terminal screens by using a camera. The transmitted images are then estimated with the acquired images. However, camera-acquired images exhibit geometric and color distortions caused by characteristics of the camera and display devices. We make use of a geometric distortion correction algorithm that exploits homography and color distortions using a weighted-linear model. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm yields promising estimation performance with respect to the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). PSNR values of the estimated images with respect to the corresponding original images range from 28-29 dB.

  • In this paper, the PLDRO is designed and implemented for X-band. It is comprised of tunable high Q resonator with a varactor diode for frequency tuning, loop filter and a 1/8 prescaler which up to 10GHz. Also, it is implemented a TCXO and a VCO signal into the phase detector and achieved a highly stable signal source. From the measurement, the designed PLDRO has the output power of 2.5dBm at 8GHz and phase noise of -64.33dBc at 10KHz offset from carrier. Its characteristic is 26 dBc. This PLDRO has much better temperature stability.

  • The tracking system plays a key role in accurate estimation and prediction of maneuvering vessel's position and velocity in a bid to enhance safety by taking avoiding action against collision. Therefore, in order to achieve this, many ocean- going vessels are equipped with radar and the ARPA system. However, the accuracy of prediction highly depends on the choice of the gain parameters, ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$ and ${\gamma}$ employed in the tracking filter. P revious research of this paper was based on theoretically developing an algorithm for a tracking module. This research paper is hence a continuation by the authors to determine the optimal values of the gain parameters used in the tracking module. A tracking algorithm is developed using the ${\alpha}-{\beta}-{\gamma}$ filter to carry out prediction and smoothing of the positions and velocities. Numerical simulations are then performed to evaluate the optimal values of the smoothing parameters that will improve the performance of the tracking module and reduce measurement noise. The twice distance root mean square (2drms) is then calculated to determine error variation.

  • TOA(time-of-arrival) and TDOA(time-difference-of-arrival) positioning techniques are commonly used in many radio-navigation systems. From the literature, it is known that the position estimate and error covariance matrix of TDOA obtained by GN(Gauss-Newton) method is exactly the same as that of TOA when the error source of the range measurement is only an IID white Gaussian noise. In case of geo-location and indoor positioning, however, multi-path or NLOS(non-line-of-sight) error is frequently appeared in range measurements. Though its occurrence is random, the multipath acts like a bias for a stationary user if it occurs. This paper presents the comparisons of error characteristics between TOA and TDOA positioning in presence of multi-path or NLOS error. It is analytically shown that the position estimate of TDOA is exactly the same as that of TOA even when bias errors are included in range measurements with different magnitudes. By computer simulation, position estimation error and error distribution are analyzed in presence of range bias errors.
