  • Ambient noise was measured for 3 hours on May, 2001 at a site of 20 m water depth in the Korean coast of the Yellow Sea. During the measurement, the strong underwater sound assuming by marine life was continually observed. The spectrum level of this sound was very high compared to that of underwater ambient noise over the frequency range from 1 to 20 kHz. Therefore, this underwater sound can continually affect the ambient noise level. In this study, the source of the underwater sound was investigated. The snapping shrimp was estimated as reliable source. It was confirmed through comparison with experimental results described in previously literatures. It was also confirmed through analysis of snapping shrimp sound measured under laboratory conditions.

  • In this paper, we report the design and the measurement of a X-band low noise amplifier (LNA) monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) using a 0.25 ㎛ gate length microstrip GaN-on-SiC high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) technology. The developed X-band GaN-based LNA MMIC achieves small signal gain of 22.75 dB ~ 25.14 dB and noise figure of 1.84 dB ~ 1.94 dB in the desired band of 9 GHz to 10 GHz. Input and output return loss values are -11.36 dB ~ -24.49 dB and -11.11 dB ~ -17.68 dB, respectively. The LNA MMIC can withstand 40 dBm (10 W) input power without performance degradation. The chip dimensions are 3.67 mm × 1.15 mm. The developed GaN-based LNA MMIC is applicable to various X-band applications.

  • To measure the vortex structures within the turbulent boundary layer, a hot-wire sensor was mounted on a stepper motor controller and moved to the designated measurement points. Near the surface within the flow field, the velocity is relatively slow, making the measurements highly sensitive to electromagnetic interference (EMI) during signal processing. This EMI primarily originates from the power supplies of computers and other electronic equipment. In our experimental setup, EMI was introduced into BNC cables connected to the hot-wire sensor from the powered stepper motor. When power was supplied to the motor controller to move the hot-wire sensor, EMI appeared on the oscilloscope screen. Consequently, unexpected noise was present in the data measured by the hot-wire sensor. To mitigate this and enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) during measurements, the connecting cables were shielded, and an old computer without EMI shielding was replaced.

  • The rapid growth of IoT technology induced by the fourth industrial revolution has resulted in research into various types of wireless sensors, and applications based on this technology are prevalent in many areas. However, among the various sites where this technology is used, railway bridges and tunnels with lengths of tens of kilometers have problems with data acquisition, due to the signal noise induced by the long distance measurement and EMI induced by the high voltage power feeding system, when conventional electric sensors are used. To overcome these problems, many studies on fiber optic sensors have been conducted as a substitute for the conventional electric sensors. However, restrictions on the types of fiber optic sensors have limited their application in railways. For this reason, a hybrid measurement system with IoT based wireless data communication, in which both electric and fiber optic sensors can be applied simultaneously, has been developed. In this study, in order to evaluate the applicability of the hybrid measurement system developed in the previous study, a real-time test for 4 types of measurement environments, which reflect possible railway sites, is performed. As a result, it was confirmed that the signals from both the electric and fiber optic sensors, which were acquired at a remote area in real-time, showed good agreement with each other and that this measurement system has the potential to handle sensors with a sampling rate of 2.5 kHz. In the future, it is expected that the IoT-based hybrid measurement system will contribute to the improvement of structural safety by enabling real-time structural health monitoring when applied to various measurement sites.

  • This paper addresses uncertainty issues encountered recently in measuring head vibration using the conventional 6-axis or 9-axis bite-bar model. Those conventional bite-bar models are shown to present insufficient information to evaluate a generalized motion of head vibration. In order to overcome such limit, a new theoretical measurement model that consists of four 3-axis linear accelerometers is suggested. It is shown to enable the measurement of three angular acceleration components and six second-order angular velocity-dependent terms. Those nine angular motion-related ones, in addition to the three linear acceleration terms at the origin, are found to make it possible to evaluate the generalized head vibration for a given position. To examine the feasibility of the proposed method, a newly designed 12-axis bite-bar was developed. Detailed experimental results obtained from the developed 12-axis bite-bar are demonstrated in this paper. They illustrate that the popular 6-axis bite-bar model yield about $4.0\%$ relative measurement uncertainty for the pitch component of head vibration, $14\%$ and $10\%$ relative measurement uncertainty for the roll and yaw components of head vibration, respectively. Furthermore, this paper proposes other uncertainty factors to be considered in the future.

  • The reliable operation of a swing check valve in the main feed water system of a power plant is most essential for successful shout-down process. A failure to close the valve at proper time often leads to the instability of the main feed water system, or even to an emergency stop of the power plant. In reality it is a very difficult task to monitor the behavior of a swing check valve. Furthermore it is impossible to see the motion of the valve. In this work two measurements were carried out simultaneously to determine the precise valve closure time. The dynamic pressure measurements were made at the inlet and outlet regions of the swing check valve. The transient vibration of the valve housing in the direction of water flow was also measured, which enabled the measurement of the transient vibration of the valve housing near valve closure. By comparing the results produced from these measurements the precise valve closure time could be determined. By carrying out order tracking technique using the dynamic pressure signals and pump rpm signal, the complicated dynamic problems inside the main feed water system can be more easily dealt with. This measurement scheme might be implemented in a power plant on a real-time basis without much difficulty. If this could be implemented, valuable information essential for shut-down operations can readily be passed on to the main control room. The feasibility of this implementation was demonstrated by this experimental work.

  • We propose that a subjective image quality assessment based on objective image quality factors in order to evaluate objectively preference of consumers. In other words, we define objective image quality factors which are easy to accept by manufacturers and they are composed of subjective image quality assessment questionnaires. Also, portrait image is selected by stimulus in order to persue easiness of evaluation for the general subjects. Throughout a subjective image quality assessment model, we evaluate recognition of image quality by consumers and analyze the effectiveness of correlation in terms of the final image quality preference. Analyzing the relationship between image quality factors, we can figure out the preferable image quality and confirm the positive effects on consumers' recognition of image quality. In the results, there are strong relationship between preference and color reproduction, dynamic range, noise, and resolution respectively. especially, the characteristic of portrait, there is high correlation between color reproduction and preference.

  • In this study, we implemented an unconstraint ECG monitoring system on a chair. Nowadays, modern people spend most of their time sitting on the chair. Therefore, it is necessary to have an unconstraint ECG monitoring system that can be used for a long time. The implemented system can perform measurement even with clothes on and it has great advantage on motion artifacts. A pair of unconstraint electrodes are placed on the back of the chair. Amplifier and filters are designed to remove motion artifacts, The baseline noise and power line noise are filtered and very low level of bio-signal is amplified to give a final measurement. Control unit and wireless transmission unit are implemented. Analog signal is converted into digital signal and transmits biological signal to the PC and the smart phone. Therefore continuous ECG monitoring in daily life is made possible. A comparison experiment between Ag / AgCl electrode and unconstraint electrode is conducted to evaluate the performance of the implemented system. As a result, we confirm our unconstraint system can be used for daily life ECG monitoring.

  • We report a sensitive and reliable FRET-based nanotechnology assay for efficient detection and quantification of bisulfite-unmodified or modified DNA. Bisulfite-untreated DNA or bisulfite-treated DNA is subjected to PCR amplification with biotin-conjugated primers so that the amounts of bisulfite-untreated and treated DNA can be differentiated. Streptavidin-coated quantum dots (QDs) are used to capture biotinylated PCR products intercalated with SYBR Green, enabling FRET measurement. Key features of our method include its low intrinsic background noise, high resolution, and high sensitivity, enabling detection of as little as 1.75 ng of bisulfite-untreated DNA in the presence of an approximately 1,000-fold excess of bisulfite-untreated DNA compared to bisulfate-treated DNA, with the use of PCR reduced (as low as 15 cycles). SYBR Green as an intercalating dye as well as a FRET acceptor allows for a single-step preparation without the need for primers or probes to be chemically conjugated to an organic fluorophore. Multiple acceptors per FRET donor significantly enhance the signal-to-noise ratio as well. In consideration of the high relevance of bisulfite treatment to DNA methylation quantitation, our system for FRET measurement between QDs and intercalating dyes can be generally utilized to analyze DNA methylation and to potentially benefit the scientific and clinical community.

  • This paper is studied, as basic research for measuring the accurate fuel amount of the CNG tank by using the transmit-receive ultrasonic sensor, the receiving sensitivity according to changed the pressure inside the tank and the contact surface of the ultrasonic sensor is analyzed. Measurement was carried out while changing the contact surface of the tank and the sensor to three shapes of Point, Line, and Surface and charging the pressure in the tank at an interval of 1 bar from 0 bar to 5 bar. Experiment results, as the pressure in the tank increased the tendency of the received signal value of the ultrasonic sensor to decrease was confirmed. As the contact area between the tank and the sensor increased, the value of the received signal increased, but the noise also increased. The results of experiment, it is judged that accuracy can be improved by changing the contact surface of the sensor.
