Preschool children in Iksan city, 3-5 years old, were examined for their prevalence of severe early childhood caries. The case definition was 1 or more cavitated, filled, or missing (due to caries) smooth surfaces in primary maxillary anterior teeth. Feeding behavior and oral hygiene behavior were investigated by a questionnaire. The prevalence was 20.8% for 36-47 months, 23.6% for 48-59 months, and 30.8% for 60-71 months. Going to sleep with bottle beyond 1 year (P<0.05), immediate removal of bottle after child fell on sleep (P<0.01), beginning time of toothbrushing (P<0.01) had significant relationship with the prevalence of severe early childhood caries. Toothbrushing frequency of primary care provider and use of oral cleaning aids by primary care provider had a tendency to be related with the prevalence(P<0.10).

Endodontic management of an immature permanent tooth with dens invaginatus poses a challenge to efficient treatment planning for the clinicians. Because it is difficult to shape, disinfect, and seal the canal space effectively, teeth with complex root canal structures often require particularly extensive and thorough treatment approaches. The purpose of this case report was to share clinical insight from the results of short-term follow-ups after regenerative endodontic treatment with a dens invaginatus. Two immature maxillary lateral incisors with Oehlers type I and III dens invaginatus and infected necrotic pulp were treated using regenerative endodontic procedures. For the type III dens invaginatus case, an unusual approach toward redesigning the complex internal structure was taken, in order to have sufficient infection control and sealing. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and a surgical operating microscope were used to aid visualization and treatment. As a result, regenerative endodontic treatment appears to be effective for managing immature permanent teeth with complex dens invaginatus, and can lead not only to clinical and radiographic resolution, but also increased thickness of the dentinal walls.

This study was aimed to retrospectively evaluate the clinical findings and treatments of odontomas in the Korean demographic group. The subject of the present study included 75 odontomas in 74 patients who received treatment from Chonbuk National University Dental Hospital between April 2005 and March 2014. The average age of the subjects were 10.3 years old (range 3 - 23 years old). 42 (56.8%) males and 32 (43.2%) females were in the present study. It was found that compound odontomas were about 4 times more common than complex odontomas. Odontomas equally occurred in both maxillary and mandible. The impaction of permanent teeth (73.3%) was the most common complication of odontomas on adjacent teeth. Most odontomas (96.0%) were surgically removed either to induce spontaneous eruption or to guide orthodontically to occlusion. When the impacted tooth could not be naturally or forcefully erupted to occlusion, it was extracted. Early detection and treatment of odontomas would increase the possible preservation of the impacted tooth by eliminating the source of disturbance. Therefore, this study recommends that periodic radiographic examination from birth until the eruption of the permanent third molar to prevent possible hindrance to the teeth eruption.

The number of reported traumatic injuries has been increasing in recent years, particularly that of dental trauma in children and adolescents. While the risks associated with dental trauma in this population have been increasingly realized, domestic reports on this issue seem to be insufficient. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dental trauma and to evaluate the relevant risk factors and the level of self-recognition. 1,371 adolescents attending middle schools at Yangsan were surveyed via clinical examination and questionnaire; the results were as follows: According to the clinical examination, the overall prevalence of dental trauma was 16.8% with preponderance of males (19.2%) compared to females (13.7%) (p < 0.05). The average number of injured teeth per adolescent with a history of trauma was 1.34. Comparing the prevalence, maxillary central incisors and enamel fracture occupied the highest ranks by tooth type and mode of trauma, respectively. Class II division 1 malocclusion and overjet exceeding 8.0 mm were identified as significant risk factors (p < 0.05). The degree of self-recognition of dental trauma showed a low coincidence rate compared with results of the clinical examination. Males expressed a higher level of satisfaction toward the results of treatment for dental trauma than females (p < 0.05).

Purpose: The objects of this study were to examine the thickness of labial plate of anterior maxillary teeth and the gingival biotype in Koreans and to evaluate whether there is a correlation between the gingival biotype and the thickness of labial plate. Materials and Methods: This study was performed on 335 teeth of 57 subjects at the Pusan National University Dental Hospital. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) was used to measure the thickness of labial plate at 4 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm from the cementoenamel junction and the gingival biotype was determined by the visibility of periodontal probe. Results: Thin facial bone less than 1 mm was observed in 87% at 4 mm, 88% at 6 mm and 90% at 8 mm. In 21% of total objects, thin gingival biotype was observed. There is no correlation between the thickness of labial plate and gingival biotype. Conclusion: Additional thorough radiographic examination such as CBCT was mandatory for aesthetic dental implant in the anterior dentition besides clinical oral examination.

This case report describes about recurrent herpetic stomatitis mimicking post-root resection complication. A 49 year-old male patient was diagnosed vertical root fracture of the mesiobuccal root of his left maxillary first molar (#26). The mesiobuccal root was resected following root canal treatment of the same tooth. 19 months later, the patient presented with pain on left hard palate after a barbecue party. Intra oral examination revealed a gum boil-like blister at the hard palate corresponding to the apex of the palatal root of #26. On clinical examination, there was bleeding on probing and the periodontal pocket depth was measured less than 5 mm with no tooth mobility. On a periapical radiograph, periodontal ligament space widening was observed. Tracing the sinus tract with gutta percha cone was attempted, however, it was impossible. Extending the field of vision, small multiple round ulcerations were observed at the palate front which caused pain to the patient. Therefore, the pain was considered a non odontogenic and the patient was referred to the department of oral medicine. The patient was diagnosed recurrent herpetic stomatitis and after 3 days of antiviral medication, the pain and ulceration were subsided.
Prediction of the sop tissue changes following hard tissue movements is very important in the preoperative analysis of surgical changes of the patient who have orthognathic surgery. This study examined post operative changes of the mid-facial sop tissues in Koreans depending upon two major positional changes of the maxilla following Le Fort - I type osteotomy for orthognathic purposes. Sixty patients(41 males and 19 females) of Koreans were selected and divided into two groups according to directional change of movement of anterior bony structures of the Maxilla as follows : Group I (44 patients) was mooed anteriorly and/or inferiorly, and Group II (16 patients) was mooed posteriorly and/or superioly. Postoperative changes of the sop tissue measurements following hard tissue changes were examined on pre - and post - operative cephalometrics by means of computerized digitation methods and the ratios of changes were analysed. The results were obtained as follows : 1. In Group I, all of the sop tissue measures except the Pn was closely followed by the changes of the hard tissue measures in the horizontal plane, but the Sn and the Cm were only correlated to the vertical changes(p<0.001). In group II, all of the sop tissue measures excluding of the N' and the Pn were significantly correlated to the hard tissue measures in horizontal plane(p<0.001), but the Ls and Stm were only correlated relatively to the vertical changes of the ANS(p<0.01). 2. Predictable ratio of the Sn was 66% of the ANS or 56% of the A in the horizontal plane and 89% of the A in the vertical plane in Group I. In Group II, the Sn was predictable as 85% of the ANS or 70% of the A in the horizontal plane but was not predictable in vertical plane. 3. Predictable ratio of the Cm was 28% of the ANS or 50% of the A in the horizontal plane and 56% of the ANS or 36% of the A in the vertical plane in Group I. In Group II, the Cm was predictable horizontally as 74% of the A. Predictable ratio of the Pn was 30% of the ANS or 38% of the A in horizontal plane in Group I, but it was not predictable both horizontally and vertically in Group II. 4. Predictable ratio of the Ls was 52% of the Pr in Group I and 77% in Group II in the horizontal plane. The Stm was predictable as 34% of the pr or 22% of the I in the horizontal plane in Group I, and was also predictable as 55% of the pr or 68% of the I horizontally and 21% of the pr or 65% of the I vertically in Group II. 5. All ratios of change in the thickness. length and area of the upper lip following maxillary movement were statiscally correlated, however, mangitudes of them were meaningful clinically.

The calcifying odontogenic cyst(COC) showed diverse terminology or classification, clinicopathologic features as well as in its biologic behavior, although it was recognized as a distinct clinicopathologic entity. The epithelial lining of a COC appears to have the ability to induce the formation of dental tissues in the adjacent connective tissue wall, and that other odontogenic tumors may sometimes be associated with it. This case is a COC associated with a complex odontoma involving an impacted left maxillary lateral incisor in a 5-year-old female child. Radiographic examination revealed a well-demarcated radiolucent lesion partially occupied by a radiopaque mass, involving the left lateral incisor crown. The histologic sections showed a cystic cavity lined with ameloblastic epithelium containing ghost cell masses with admixed with complex odontoma components. The presence of mixed radiolucent-radiopaque lesion in children as observed in this case, the possibility of COC must be considered. In this case, there was no recurrence 1 year after enucleation and the space control is ongoing now.
The author has arrived at the following result after having carried out multilateral study based on a total of 282 maxillofacial fracture patients who have receive treatment at the Euijeongbu general hospital and Shinchun general hospital in the northern district of Kyunggido from march 1988 to august 1990. 1. Sex distribution of Mx. facial fx. patient was higher in male by 4.6:1 and was predominant in the 3rd decade with 40.4% followed in decreasing order by the 2nd decade and the 4th. 2. A majority were in the Mn. with 40.2% followed in decreasing order by zygoma. nasal bone and maxilla. 3. For the sex distribution according to anatomy, make to female ratio was 6.2:1 in the mandible, followed in decreasing order by zygoma, and nasal bone with predominance in male. 4. Car accident with 42.8% was the most common cause of fx. followed in decreasing order by violence, workmen's accident, and fall down. 5. The involvement of other trauma areas are head. 79.0%, abdomen-thorax, and the extremities in decreasing order. 6. In the mandibular fx. a majority were in the symphysis with 73.9% followed in decreasing order by angle, Condyle, and body. 7. Maxillary fx. of the type LeFort II was estimated to be 41.2% 8. Fracture in the zygoma including zygomatic arch was estimated to be 72.5%
Purpose : This study was designed to evaluate the clinical aspect of cysts which arised in the oral and maxillofacial region. Patients and Methods : We reviewed clinical record, radiograph, histopathologic and operative report of 155 patients who had been diagnosed as cysts and treated at the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery in Chonnam National University Hospital from January 2003 to December 2008. Gender, age, classifiaction, anatomic distribution, clinical sign and symptoms, treatment, complications and recurrence rate were studied. Results : 1. Among 155 patients, the male patients(64.5%) were more than the female(35.5%). 2. The average age ofthe patients was 37.2 years(ranging from 5 to 79 years). 3. In pathologic classification, radicular cyst and dentigerous cyst were most common cysts, irrespective of 73 cases(48.3%) and 35 cases(23.2%). 4. The frequently involved cystic regions were followed as mandibular molars(38.1%), and maxillary incisors(30.2%). 5. The frequent sequence of clinical symptoms was edema(29.9%), no symptom(18.9%), tenderness(13.9%), pain(11.5%) and abscess(9.4%). 6. The most prevalent treatment was the combination operation, such as cyst enucleation with extraction or endodontic treatment of the causative tooth(76.8%) 7. Among 155 cases, 2 cases that were treated using enucleation method were recurred(1.3%).
